Annoyed we have to play in WA twice.

Brisbane at the GABBA is a tough way to end the year.

We don't play at the MCG for five game in a row which is bizzare.

Double ups against Dogs, Port, Brisbane, Collingwood and Freo.

Geelong at Geelong.

Lots of prime time early.

Q'bday away game despite technically Collingwood hosting the last proper one in 2019.

We were always going to be away to Richmond this year. We had an 85K capacity for our home game this year but only 55K bothered showing up.

Collingwood you could argue should be our home QBDAY game considering we haven't hosted them at the G since 2018. Although I think we got the SCG gate this year.

The good - home games against Essendon, Carlton & Collingwood

The bad - 7 interstate trips (incl Alice Springs)

The ugly - playing down at that [censored] in Geelong - AGAIN

Bring it on i say

Assuming a reasonable run with injuries i expect to finish with 19 or 20 wins. Can't see anyone beating us tbh but we're bound to have 1 or 2 off days i suppose

Nothing would please me more than a prelim like display in front of the Cats fans in round 17.

Cannot stand those [censored] Bandits.

Weird how it really holds no fears after the year we just had... Like that we have Lions, Dogs and Port twice, and twice Vs Pies is a great opportunity to scar them... ;)

That would be good. An after the siren goal to win it would be better

Only if those 2 chit trucks Carlton and Collingwood are still in it so late in the season.

Because it’s our turn? After years of nothing McGuire got worried about us and demanded splitting Queens Birthday matching the same year we’re away to Richmond.

We seem to get 2 games a year against the Pies semi regularly though, so it’s up to us to make round 21 a big game.

Wow, of 12 possible interstate team games (Geelong included), only 3 are at the MCG.

Also this “While the Bulldogs have six primetime matches in those first nine weeks, premier Melbourne has three”

Cant help but feel we got a really bad draw this year.

Lots of BIG Games in Prime time this fixture... with more in the second half of season especially if Freo and Pie have a run at finals...

My early thoughts:

  1. We double-up against the Dogs, Port Adelaide, Brisbane, Fremantle and Collingwood. That's three of the best four sides of 2021 other than us, plus a side who should be pushing for finals in 2022 (Fremantle). At first glance, that's brutal. However, almost every year one of the previous season's top sides falls away. It's a bit dangerous to read into the five return games.
  2. We will learn a lot more about the difficulty of our fixture as we see what happens with 5 and 6 day breaks. So far, in the first 9 rounds we've been given three 6-day breaks, two of which are back-to-back
  3. Hard to explain why we get three Wed/Thurs/Fri games in the first 9 rounds but the Dogs get six. We were the premiers, not them.
  4. Plenty of opportunities for more prime time games in the ones yet to be given a timeslot: Brisbane at the G off the bye is ripe for a Thursday night, and the games vs Geelong, Port, the Dogs, Collingwood and Brisbane the second time are all options
  5. It's farcical that we, again, play West Coast in Perth.
  6. Whilst I'd prefer not to have to play in Geelong, that game was a certainty after Round 23 this year. Pencil it in for a prime time slot absent one/both sides struggling
  7. We open the year in prime time at the G. A bit disappointing we have to close it on the road, but it's not wholly unjust
  8. This was the perfect year to send Richmond, Hawthorn, Carlton and/or Collingwood to Geelong. Instead, not a single one of them is forced to make the trip. The unfairness continues on that front
  9. Only one game out of Melbourne between Rounds 5-15 inclusive. A pretty good stretch

6 of our 10 MCG games are against Vic clubs and 2 more against Sydney and Brisbane who draw a crowd. Commercially that means a lot of big home games. I’d love to just play the bunny interstate teams at the G and rack up wins but apart from the financial outcome that doesn’t sharpen us up like big games with big crowds.

I’m not too worried about where we play our away games. A Richmond or Collingwood style 16 games at the G sure would be nice but that’s just not realistic for us.

Looking at that draw, I'm thinking we'll do marginally worse than last year. I'm guessing a slowish start to the year until we hit our straps mid year. Kind of the reverse of last year. That said, I'm tipping a 16-6 finish and a definite shot at back to back flags.

I too hate the Wednesday season kick off. Can't Carlton get their customary pantsing by the Tiges to start the year in a less advantageous time slot? It's definitely going to affect crowd numbers and TV ratings. I'm also not enamoured of us playing Geelong once and it being down at Mordor. Once the Tiges won the flag in 2017, they no longer had to go there. I don't see why we should be sent down there either.

Things I like are two games against the Pies ($$$). I'm guessing we're going to be shafted and be the away team on QB but if the Pies are halfway decent, that will draw ratings and spectators. Plus I'd suggest we're still ropable over the SCG debacle of last year so I like our chance either way.

Who do you have to [censored] to get a home game against West Coast and to stop getting games in Geelong?
Unbelievable

Basically barrack for essendon, Carlton , hawthorn or the filth

who cares anymore … we’ll smash them again anyways

unfortunately one premiership isn’t going to earn us the same level of respect afforded to the “big” clubs yet 🤢

Anzac eve locks us in to a Sat-Sun stretch between rounds 5-7. Also makes it 4 vs 6 prime time games as well, which looks more even.

Given we are hosting rounds 1 and 3 and are involved in the big marquee games I reckon that’s fair enough.

This looks about as big of a commercial fixture as we could get in a year we don’t host Anzac Eve and QBday.

the answer to this one is super simple - two board members at the dogs work for disney, who are the naming rights sponsor for docklands

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
