Membership Tally 2022

Featured Replies

Not directly related but was in a store the other day with my melbourne premiers mask on.  Some guy came up to me and started talking to me.  Had my earphones in initially so couldn't hear him.  When I took them out it felt like I still I wasn't hearing him correctly.

"you should give someone else a go."
"Huh?"
"Yeah someone else... like the dogs or the tigers"
"ummm...??"

By this time I realised he was not 100% with it - he wasn't even having a laugh.  It just hit me that for some people, our domination of the competition had already lasted a very long time!  Hopefully that's what it feels like for all the youngsters (or anyone else) that are still deciding which team they will follow.

All the same, I couldn't help but say "we have waited 57 years"

Maybe we do it differently to other clubs!
According to George’s chart at the beginning of this thread we’re at just on 41,000 members. Last year we didn’t reach that number until the end of March, beginning of April. So, currently we’ll ahead of last year where the final total was over 54,000!

Keep smiling😁.

No that wasn't my expectations at all.

I thought at least starting point was 46k perhaps.

Does anyone know what we were this time last year?

DD look at George's Posts with figures for the last 8/10 years under "Membership 2022".

it's all there for you !!

Agree but we seem to have a lot of members who like to sign up at the first game/just prior to the season. I assume the MCC/MFC members are already counted in the tally?

Don't think so as those who selected the payment plan the final payment goes thru on 18th Feb. That was my understanding when I spoke to the club late last year. Anyone else able to confirm?

Please excuse my ignorance, but what do the things that look like maracas on the Melbourne line represent?

Edit: never mind, I just realised what they are. 😑

Good old wooden spoons dear man we don't talk about them any more I trust.

Only that beautiful huge silver and bronze Cup that I held a couple of months ago so previously in my hand.

It was so good to see Maxy and Goody raise it  at the GF for the whole world to see.

@Its Time for Back to Backhas been in contact with the Membership department.....

Today tally: 41,562.

..... we didn't reach this mark until 28 March last year

If we disregard the pattern of sign-ups from last year, due to COVID, then the takeaway is from now on until season start we add about 1,000 per week.  On the week of first game we add around 2-3 K, but the increase year on year is basically the increase over previous at this point in time.

In other words, we are up by about 10K today, so the final number should be around 65K.

Edited by george_on_the_outer

65k would be a great base to build off. Sustained success over the next 5 or so years with all the tv/media exposure etc that comes with it should see us meeting the stated goal of 75k and hopefully nudging 80k.

Total now 41,970

I included / signed my mum up this year as part of the family membership I have, so there is one more genuinely new member onto the tally.  What's even better is that she was originally an Essendon supporter, so is proof that conversion therapy can work!!

Incidentally I've also moved back down from Queensland, so now a full member again, not an interstate one and looking forward to getting to many a game this year a the spiritual home of footy and the MFC, the mighty G.  My kids are going to love the atmosphere there when it's packed with Demons supporters, with the team taking down the opposition.

Would love to see a few wooden spoons dotted along the yellow (Hawthorn) part of the chart and for the membership lines to cross sometime in the future!

This membership table comes from the HS on 19 Feb. West Coast had the most members last year and are probably on top at this point. We are having our best year ever and are 9th. A bit of a reality check about the relative strengths of the Clubs and where we sit.

Richmond 84,948
Collingwood 70,000
Carlton 67,928
Essendon 60,678
Hawthorn 60,100
Port Adelaide 52,164
Geelong 49,055
St Kilda 43,500
Melbourne 43,000
Adelaide 40,000 +
Fremantle 40,000
Western Bulldogs 38,824
North Melbourne 38,756
Sydney Swans 35,722
Brisbane Lions 29,318
GWS Giants 25,094
Gold Coast 8,721

As I posted before and now there wont be crowd limits , buy your membership  now , dont wait for round 1 , the queue out the tent will be huge and ga seats will fill quickly

True. Not that we should have needed one given we're our club was not so long ago in the Bailey/ Neeld/ tanking saga days. We've got an exceptional playing list with exceptional depth for the first time in my life. But we've got a LOT of work to do to build up our membership, create a frikn  home base and be seen as a powerful club on and off the ground.  In those terms we won a flag but this needs to be just the beginning....we're only at base camp on our way up to the peak of Everest.

You have to purchase your ticket for $0 last time we went to the MCG based on your membership ticket.

Have  you info yet from the  Govt that the ticketing is changing ? If not your "tent" purchase is  completely wrong and misleading and will only confuse people.

Yes you are correct in advising all to get their membership prior to Round 1 but nothing to do with match day queues for purchasing that I  know Of.

Looking at that list, I seriously question those GWS numbers.

Also, Carlton supporters are suckers aren’t they. So many must be pleased with mediocre results.

It’s nice to know the tally but I’d like to also see the revenue generated. I’m not sure if they’re doing it this year but St Kilda normally have the pay $1 now membership and pay the rest next year. Those $1 deals would count towards the tally but I’m sure plenty don’t follow through and pay the balance.

St Kilda is offering 37 different membership packages including a $20.00 pet package!
Melbourne offers 21 packages (no pets) and no gimmicky ones.

I liked the pet packages. I got some good stuff for my dogs through those

Does that mean for every cat that takes up a pet membership, it counts 9 times towards their tally?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
