A decade before the Tigers won their 13th premiership, they were sitting on 10 VFL/AFL flags, the last of which came three decades earlier in 1980. They had been in the football wilderness for much of the interim period and, at one stage came close to folding in the midst of a financial crisis. New CEO Brendon Gale made this statement in 2010 ~

''By 2020, we aspire to have won our 13th premiership; consistently provide the most exciting and powerful match-day experience in the competition; once again have the strongest support base in the nation, and enjoy the strongest emotional connection with our members and fans.'' 

The Tigers achieved their aims and today, after breaking our own drought, we are level with them on 13 premierships and are striving for more. What are the other things besides a flag that you think we should be aspiring to and are we achieving those aims?

I like that we're trying to be the club that represents our city. If you call Melbourne home then we represent your city in the AFL and if you've just moved to Melbourne then we should be your team of choice, like they were for me. 

Have a home base. No idea how close we are to getting it

And an AFLW flag. I'd love to see Daisy and Paxy win one before bowing out. Reckon we're a great shout in 2022

 

 

Have our supporters not only join up as members but actually attend match day. We are going to get opposition supporters there this year because most attend games to watch good football but they also want to see a good game. Our supporters are no different. I want to see us outnumber them and I want our supporters to give the players their support on game day.

I went to the GWS game at the G and if you closed your eyes you would have thought you were at Goshes on a training day.

I'd like opposition teams' supporters to dread the trek to the G to play us.

If we have continued success all the other things will flow on, the Home Base, the facilities we need and the respect we deserve.

Would love to see Fritta get a Coleman.

I have to agree with Dante. I don’t want to go to anymore games at the G where they barely bother to open the food stalls inside because there won’t be enough fans to make it economical.

 I’d  love for our fans to have a deep connection to the club and be proud to be a member. In the last month I’ve lost track of the number of times someone has come up to me at the shopping centre or cafe while I’m wearing my demons cap and given me a quiet  but intense ‘Go Dees’. I’d like more of that.

To achieve everything in our 2020-2023 Strategic Plan would be nice.

5. Our 5 current main sponsors (Zurich, Hertz, Jaguar, Beyond Bank and New Balance) being locked in long term like Ford used to be with Geelong. I reckon we will lose NT connection to the thieves at Gold Coast due to AFL pressure.

6. Genuine Premiership contenders at least twice each decade (like Swans and Hawks).

I was gonna say it’d be good to jettison the whole cheeseboard/Range Rover/Chalet stereotype but I actually don’t mind our club being regarded in this way. It’s infinitely better than being known for having an IQ as well as total number of teeth count both in single digits, for example  

But I do take umbrage with the whole snob/entitled/heads up our ars**es thing which is why I love that on the day after the GF Kate said this is the people’s Cup. She said we’re not gonna put it under lock and key and not let anyone touch it. Then she said that it had already sustained a tonne of dents and dings in just 24 hours. She wasn’t lying either: I saw it yesterday and yeah that Cup certainly ain’t “still in it’s original packaging.” 😁

Four-peat. Indisputably the greatest club of them all.

Need to start the building of a solid financial base.

In a time of dynamic fixtures and covid limits/hesitancy it won't be easy.

Also need to double our FTA appearances medium term to drive sponsorship dollars.

This list should give us a five year window of relative success. Let's not squander it.

A fairer go (represented by r-e-s-p-e-c-t) from the AFL, the umpires and most of the selected football commentators. Then, the rest will look after itself - coz we are the greatest!
