Hard to know exactly if they will be bid on as they have hardly played any footy over the past 2 seasons, but is prudent to plan ahead just in case.

I think Essendon is hoping hey will develop a bit more in 2022, although not too much as so they get bid on early. Word is Alwyn Jnr is a bit more advanced than Jayden, but that's just what I have read

Essendon's new draft selections will prove vital in securing the services of Jake Stringer and Adam Saad who have both nominated the Bombers as their preferred destination club.

McCartney was at the Bulldogs during that trade period.

That deal was done with the once head of Melbournes recruiting team Craig Cameron. IIRC he left for Gold Coast after that trade period, and McCartney moved onto to GWS to replace him.

We probably won that trade although Smith has been a disappointment barring his B&F winning first year with us and Saad has moved on. Stringer has been really good.

I think draft picks are bit overrated. They are only as good as the players you pick with them.

Pick 1 could get you Sam Walsh, or Paddy McCartin

Pick 32 could get you Trent Rivers, or Luke Valente

Melbourne have done it beautifully lately, trading in the likes of Lever, May, and Brown (Langdon FA), yet when they have had picks, drafted really well (Petracca, Oliver, Jackson, Pickett, Fritsch, Rivers, Jordan etc)

If I was the Giants I would be grabbing that. I don’t think Hill is that good. Very inconsistent and seen him jib a few contests. Not sure he has a great tank either. Maybe they are waiting for the last hour.

Sorry if this is going off topic, but does anyone know how many other father-son or NGA there might be in the mix at the pointy end of next year's draft.  Obviously very hard to know with lack of exposure.  But it there's a few around, it might make sense to trade our other picks after 17 for future 2nd/3rd/4th round picks as they might have some added currency next year?

Unless they can get a player to beef up their best 22 (hence targeting the Hawks forwards) I’d keep him. If he gets traded at the end of next year for little or nothing, even if he sits out the season (I doubt he does) they’ve haven’t given up much. Otherwise even though they keep finding ways to be stuck around the middle of the ladder the Giants remain in a premiership window. They have all the most important pieces, if Hill had a big summer he’d be a player they don’t have on their list.

I’m not sure Hill would’ve grown up at the Bombers on a nice healthy deal.

GWS need to look at their welfare staff who haven’t created a good enough relationship that he could be honest with them. 

But if Hill wants a big contract he’ll have to earn it the old fashioned way.

Agree, Very inconsistent up til now. Our future 2nd was just about overs depending on where we finish next season.

I really don't think the Dons were the ones who were hard to deal with on this occasion

I watched Colin Young on Foxtel's trading day last night and my first thought was "used car salesman".  I'm not sure Bobby got the best advice here, but GWS were absolutely entitled not to trade him if it didn't work for them.  

Does he now have the where-with-all to knuckle down and play his best footy to go back to the well at the end of 2023 or does he throw his bum in the corner and end up on the scrap heap as a delisted free agent without any suitors?

Young is also Lobb's manager.  The other day it seemed like Bobby was used as a trading chip to free up cap space so Lobb could get from Freo to GWS.   GWS didn't like really entertain either deal.

Young also didn't help Bobby's cause saying how distraught he was, how hard it would be to go back to GWS and he won't be signing another contract with them.  Great way to devalue a possible trade next year.  

Meanwhile, Dodoro says:  “My last conversation was with him at 5pm, I said, ‘Look, we tried our best, we wish you all the very best,’ and he was fine, he was getting a tattoo actually, so he was happy.”

I just don't think either party wanted it enough to make it happen. Hill is a nice player but the whole situations stinks of something weird.

I'm not much of conspiracies but the Colin Young theory makes a bite of sense.

the 'conversations' about finlayson going back to south australia started three months ago

the request from hill to be traded to one specific club in victoria started four days ago

it was always an ambit request that required gw$ getting 'cover' for a small forward

particularly important with greene on sabbatical for the first five weeks

If I had a dollar for every time I've been told "go back to your own forum", I'd be a rich man. But as I have said earlier, I really do think most on here are reasonable and good football discussion can be had.

As for Bobby Hill, I'm a bit with @Axis of Bob, something doesn't really feel right. Sounds like his trade request caught GWS completely off guard, and the fact he contacted Essendon to seek out a trade as opposed to Essendon chasing him makes it seem like we weren't overly keen. Together with the Lobb trade, almost like it was manufactured by the manager and player but none of the clubs being involved. The opposite to the Luke Breust deal, where both Hawthorn and GWS had agreed, but the player had no idea about it and said "no".

I think our offer was fair (future 2nd), but with GWS seemingly just not interested in doing any type of deal, which is fine as he is contracted, the trade was never going to happen. But I was comfortable with our offer, and would have been disappointed if we stumped up more for a player such as Bobby Hill.
