Bunch of Dees re-sign

Great result.

Happy to see us fight off competition for Chandler and the others can play roles if their development continues and they are needed.

Melbourne has re-signed seven players ahead of the 2022 season

So does that just leave Declase unsigned?

With Jones, Vanders, Jetta and Lockhart off the main list and Nietsche and Bradke off the rookies we will use 3 draft picks at this stage with Dunstan coming in and potentially two rookies? Is that right?

  • deejammin' changed the title to Re-signing Frenzy!!! Chandler, Daw, Bedford, Baker, Smith and Turner ink new deals for 2022!

I wondering who is left and how many picks we need to use

I think you have to take min three to use in the draft?

min 3 to draft but that can include upgraded rookies.  so presuming JJ and Chandler are upgraded then only need 1 pick.

It appears Hore, Hibberd and Declase are the ony ones I have not seen a formal announcement regarding their contract.

I could not be more impressed with our list management over the last 5-6 years

And it continues to be excellent - all seven players are terrific signings.

The seven are: Chandler, Oskar Baker, Toby Bedford, Mitch Brown, Majak Daw, Deakyn Smith and Daniel Turner.

Arguably, if our injuries are not too bad, only Chandler, Bedford are serious chance at regular senior selection. But all are solid citizens and contribute to the one club mentality.

Note: i reckon turner might be a smokey for senior section. Seems a natural footballer, has good hands and i could see him slot into the back half as KPD. Declease is not in that seven , but i think he also could be an outside of chance of cracking senior selection

I thought they gave Hibbert another year

assume he'd be deserving of his own announcement given he's a premiership player now!

Interested to hear the lengths of those various extensions.

The one that surprises me is Baker. I really thought he would get some solid interest from another club where he was closer to a senior run.

Mirrors perhaps the tightness of the various salary caps etc and no one willing to punt on future rises in the cap.

Best of luck to them all. If Casey ever gets onto the field we will certainly have a competitive team.

Hore is on the main list.

Doing some reading on the excellent Demonland list management thread it looks like you’re right. Although there are several reports of Hibbo getting another year, I can’t find the actual announcement.
It seems we have Declase as the only rookie not extended, and Hore waiting on his fate.
As you say we need to upgrade Chandler and JJ which leaves us with only one pick to use (17) but possibly with Hore going we could draft another (if he’s on the main list?)?

if we keep Hibbo and Hore, the only way we can use all 3 picks is if 1 Rookie goes.  Declase is the only one left.

Perplexed that Baker was re-signed to be honest and not Lockhart.

Bloke is trending towards Jake Spencer.

At the moment with JJ and Chandler to be elevated we have 4 A rookies, 5 if we retain Declase. So 1 free main list spot (pick 17 atm) 1 Free A rookie spot, and both our category B rookie spots. So if Hore goes we can draft two players in addition to using two picks to upgrade Chandler and Jordan.
It might be an anxious wait for young Marty as it could come down to who Taylor and co think we can get at 37.

I thought Lockhart was mighty stiff. Was best 22 until the [censored] incident in the pre-season against the doggies. I guess with Bowey going past him and Hunt ahead of him all year that’s why he had to go? Is there any chance we use our one free rookie spot to re-rookie Jay?
Baker was ordinary against North in his one AFL game this year, but I’ll back our development crew in, he’s behind a few blokes but if he becomes a quality winger it’s still one of the very few areas we’re a bit shallow.

Marty Hore has not played a game in 2 seasons so his chances have come down to his training form in his rehab group, I think the chances of a contract has decreased due to the tightness of the places available.

I hope we keep Declase

How many list spots do we have on our list now?

Assuming Hibbo has re-signed as reported we have:

2 main list spots, 1 if we recontract Hore

2 A Rookie spots, One if we re-rookie Declase

2 B Rookie spots

Hmmm yeah not sure about Baker

But glad we kept Chandler

I wonder how far Rosman is too? Would be great to see him explode next year

It’s worth noting though because the total list size between your main list and cat A rookies can’t exceed 42 (+ 2 cat B rookies for 44) we can EITHER put two players on our main list or draft one main list and one rookie.

We can’t fill all four positions.

Just to clarify we currently have 36 on our main list (including Chandler and JJ’s upgrades), we can go to 38.

We have four rookies in cat A (MBrown, Daw, Smith, Turner) so we could in theory go to 6, but only if we keep our main list to 36.

Stoked!  Big fan of Chandler!

I’m with you.

Could be an exciting player if he gets an opportunity.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
