Do my ears deceive me?!!!

Gerard Healy currently giving praise to Melbourne's talent finders for drafting Oliver, Trac and partic for finding McVee (said Juddy is just about the best kick in the league) and for trading for Lever and May

Though he did give a levelling backhander for picking Weid above Curnow and McKay

Maybe Gerard might even don a red n blue scarf if we make the GF, being Demon alumni and all. Won't hold my breath, though

not if it's against his beloved bloods he won't

I think the poster is referring to the contract being up, not that JT is necessarily moving on.

Although I could be wrong...

Yes, no suggestion at all heโ€™s leaving. Just that that contract was signed after the premiership. So heโ€™ll be in for a renewal soon.ย
ย

it has to be an open cheque book because if we donโ€™t give him that, 17 other clubs would!ย

I keep coming back to this thread hoping to see that he has extended his tenure at the Dees. Frustrating.

  • 1 year later...

BUMP!

Sorry, no news!

Can anyone advise when his contract expires?

I thought it was this year but desperately hope I'm wrong!

Even if it is next year, hope we extend his contract soon.

Heโ€™s probably had enough, due for a new challenge maybe

Think I'll wait and see how things pan out.

I'm not convinced he is a super urgent signing.

If you look back at our recent drafts, the last draft where he absolutely nailed it was 2019.

Since then we have misspent first round picks on the likes of Laurie, Van Rooyen, Jefferson and Tholstrup.

It's probably not much fun being a talent spotter when your only opportunities to draft players are in the first round and your dumbass list manager has traded away all the later picks.

Everyone has seen the top 20 players a million times over and we can all identify that the Langfords and Lindsays of the world are going to be quality players.

The real skill, and presumably the real satisfaction, comes from identifying the diamonds in the rough that everyone else has overlooked. He has not had that opportunity in the past four years.

I wouldn't be surprised if he is considering his options elsewhere.

Kelly O was at a TAC cup game on the weekend with some impressive talent on display including Harry van Hattum and Kai Parker.

I donโ€™t think any major footy dept re signings or decisions will occur until we have a new coach, they might want to bring their own people and so on. Though I do very much hope JT stays with the club as I feel heโ€™s done a very good job

Been our recruitment manager since 2012. That's a long time. Given the uncertainty and change at the club, I wouldn't be surprised if he looks for a new challenge or we seek out a fresh recruitment leader.

He's done a great job and built the core of our premiership team. That said he's had a few misses the past few years IMO, some of them in the first round, and you have to nail those early picks. They're the easy ones, the elite talent, the game changers you build around. In years past that was the likes of Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw, Jackson, Salem, Pickett.
Jury is still out, but we've had some less successful high selections in recent years such as Laurie, Tholstrup, Jefferson that we traded up to take. The fact they haven't come on to even cementing a spot, let alone impacting games, is a big reason for our drop off IMO.

Would prefer he stay, but not the end of the world if he goes at this point I think.

Re; Tholstrop, We took him at #13 but not many have really kicked on yet in this #13-#45 bracket.
Darcy Wilson went at #19 and he's in and out.
Stand outs probably Logan Morris at #31 and then Shaun Mannagh at #37.
Seemingly lots of TBC in that draft.

Getting talent to the club is one thing, developing them is the other factor. There has been a lot of footy dept changes in the last 3 to 4 years. Cause and effect factor possibly.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
