I"d  look at recruiting or drafting a key forward

There is a bald bloke with a beard playing for us, who played 39 games in his first 5 years on the list and kicked 18 goals, while often played forward. Yes he had injuries, as did Weid.

I am not comparing the two, only that sometimes careers turn around after poor starts.

I would move Weid on if we had a better replacement, but we don't and we have no ruck back up either, after the current two.

So unless there is a great deal to be done, that gets us a better player and a ruck backup as well, he stays another year.

You are assuming he wants to stay and I doubt he would accept a one year deal. Goes elsewhere and can get a two year deal on probably better money.

Pretty much my thoughts Dazzle. Our preferred forward structure includes two KPFs plus Jacko & Fritta. Given our 2 current keys forwards are approaching veteran status, we would be mad to punt the Weed as we have no other young KPF on the list. If one of BBB or TMac go down, at the very least Weed can fill a role.

Ditto pretty much my thoughts as well gents. Lets give him 1 more, get him to live with resident psch Chocko and see if we can make him a vital part of the machine

It was good seeing TMac being able to switch down back in the Geelong game to cover May. That versatility puts him ahead of Weids for me at the moment.

That aside I can see him improving in the future and if he doesn’t want to go anywhere I wouldn’t trade him. Both Browns have injury history too.

Did that actually happen, though?

I wasn't sure if he was moved into defence for any period of time or just happened to be caught there, which happens from time to time (Ben Brown was caught in defence a few weeks ago, against Geelong in Round 23 maybe).

If the guy is out of contract then he's not going to sign on for 1 year. Maybe he's our modern day David Cordner. Either way, if his AFL career doesn't pan out he could always give suburban cricket a try.

We have no key forward depth. Wouldn't be surprised if Weid signs on for 12 mths if he gets no significant interest

has to be a 2yr deal imo coz FA after that and he wasn't far off getting picked more consistently throughout the year, if this wasn't finals rn mcdonald woulda been close to being dropped had as lean a month as ever if weid was playing ressies and performing he could be in the side. patience is thin yes but ur right he gets another gig

Can we turn him ino a defender?

we don't need to, we have 3 elite keys and lever

I can't have any talk of Petty forward. He's done it alright in an emergency, but the way he's playing now he could be May 2.0 by the time the original retires. Weid certainly won't be, and as much as I like him and would be happy to keep him, he should 100% go somewhere where he can play regularly.

Yep, completely agree. Petty is a natural intercept defender. He won't and shouldn't be playing forward. That constant suggestion is ridiculous.

It's not ridiculous at all. He has played forward and looked good. Probably just as ridiculous as those who said Tom Mac can't play forward either, when he was a defender spraying the ball everywhere and then turned into an accurate forward.

What is ridiculous is pigeon holing all footballers.

Tom McDonald and Harrison Petty are completely different footballers.

McDonald's move forward was last chance saloon because he was doing as you say, spraying the ball all over the place.

Conversely, Petty is holding down a key back position and doing a very good job  in the best defence in AFL history.

Apples and oranges. He won't be moving.

Agree he is doing a very good job, but if say Tomlinson is back and Weid leaves and a key forward goes down, Petty is the next one they would try.

AF do you see Petty, Tomlinson, Lever and May in same backline come 2022?

I forgot where I read it, but It was something along the lines of the reasons why the coaching staff moved Petty back to the backline was to more so protect his body a little bit from the crash and bash as they felt his groin injury from last year was resulting in being overworked the year before as main key forward.

The other key aspect was that they rated him enormously down back, but also like that he now is now well versatile that if they need to swing him forward they can.

He might be thrown there if we're completely out of options, just as May was last year during the Freo game, but I can't see it being a long term solution.

And Tomlinson will very likely play back next year, alongside May, Petty and Lever.

My back 7 would be:

May - Tomlinson - Lever

Salem - Petty - Bowey

Rivers

If a lockdown player in Hibberd's role is needed, they'll be competing for Rivers' spot. Or as @rjay says below, May can play this role.

Rivers on the other hand could find himself in the midfield mix next year.

They could quite easily...May is quick and can play short or tall...he could well take Hibberds spot.

Lever is a floater, leaving Tommo and Petty to take the talls.

I don’t think you can play all four of those down back as we’d lose too much with only having two/three of Salem, Rivers, Bowey, Hibberd, Hunt… and Smith.

Fair enough. Each to their own mate. I think Hibberd, if he goes on, will be on the fringes, as will Hunt and Smith.

It may also be a horses for courses thing, but we also have to remember that we've been blessed by a distinct lack of long term injury (except for Tomlinson). So all these guys will likely be needed in the mix over 23 rounds.

Anyone reckons we are a chance to get 38 from North for Weid?

Then we bundle 33, 38, 54 for Doggies first rounder?

Dogs want the points, we want to be top 20 for any trades / mac andrew

No chance the Dogs would do that trade

No one is giving up a first rounder for (after academy and father son picks) a late pick in the 30's, a pick in the 40's and pck in the late 50's, they could get a far better deal elsewhere

They can definitely all play together. Lever as the loose intercepter and May can absolutely play small or tall. So can Petty.

Agree with this Redleg.

Additionally, a lack of interest from other clubs was a motivating factor for TMac over the preseason and this year - I’d hope this would also be a motivating factor for Weid next year. Prove them all wrong.

Letting Petty establish himself as a defender is essential for his confidence as an AFL player - I wouldn't move him for 2022.

But you realise they need points to match the bid that will come for Darcy as a father/son selection. He will probably be selected at 1 or 2 and the Dogs need points to match, they won't actually be using their first round selection (pick 19/20)

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
