What a fitting article at this time and more so because it’s Father’s Day. Ron acknowledges the impact on him of the loss of his father (former Demon premiership player Ron Barassi Senior) when he was just five years of age. The story of how Norm Smith and family took him in and helped raise him is a legendary part of the club’s history.

He was a legacy boy and the league introduced the father/son rule with him in mind. More than eighty years on, the legacy of his father’s death as a war hero still lives on at the Melbourne Football Club.

When the club put on a function to celebrate Ron’s 80th birthday, opera singer David Hobson sang “You Raise Me Up” which I believe was requested as one of Ron’s favourites. I’m not sure if this was because it can be interpreted as being about the influence of fathers on young children but this is my contribution to Ron on this special day.

He played in our last Prelim. Final victory over the cats in 1954, his 19the game , at the age of 18 Year 203 days (and kicked a goal). Youngest player on the field that day.

Thanks for everything Ron, we love you,  and get ready to unfurl the flag next March.

As a dees supporter, Nick McCallum must be loving his job at the moment.

"I'll just pop around to Ron Barassi's place for a quick interview"

Sombre moment to reflect ... doing it for Ron ... the most inspiring footballer, ever ... what a man ... there can be no better tribute, Dees, than to take the GF Flag and Trophy for Ron and then present it to him. The whole footballing public will understand and appreciate the win, his stature and his inspirational influence on all of our lives.

Love RDB.

Wish Robbie Flower was still with us to share in this experience. I  am sure he is watching from above and hopefully help guide us to our first flag since 64.

I feel like Jimmy is watching and has possessed Gawn’s body after that 5 goal effort on Friday. It’s the most logical explanation for what I witnessed.

I'm not usually prone to spontaneous emotion, but seeing these champion veterans doing their bit so passionately means I can't help it.

If we win this bloody thing, I will freely cry tears of joy.  If I have any left.

Go you Demons

There's no way I could be drinking frothies at half time on grand final day,

Dropping my concentration levels at all might be the difference between life and death.

Save the frothies for the celebration

Veteran Demonland Trackwatchers Kev Martin, Slartibartfast & Demon Wheels were on hand at Gosch's Paddock to kick off the official first training session for the 1st to 4th year players with a few elder statesmen in attendance as well. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025. 2024 Player Reviews: #3 Christian Salem

The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence. The first round draft pick at #13 from twelve months ago the strongly built medium forward has had an impressive introduction to AFL football and is expected to spend more midfield moments as his career progresses.
