Smith was destroyed by Cameron.

The experiment failed.

But our PF opponent may dictate what we do. If we get GWS, Hibberd held him well earlier this year and I'd make the switch. But if we get Geelong, we may feel like having just beaten then with Smith we can do it again.

If Hunt's fit he could take Bowey's spot.

TMac stays. He and Brown work together and although he struggled today, we still put up 28 scoring shots. Leave the forwards and back TMac in to be fitter after the week off. I don't want us to be relying on Jackson or Gawn to get forward and be a second tall forward marking option on a big Optus Stadium in a prelim.

What game did you  watch Salem had Cameron the first quarter he kicked 3, 2 after that for the game shake head.

Very harsh on Bowey DD

3 quarters of being fumbly, and got caught a couple of times. Came good for the last quarter.

The finals pressure got the better of him. It goes up a whole new level come prelim with bigger crowd etc.

It's ruthless and sounds harsh, but if Hunt was available he comes straight in for Bowey.

Don't get started on Joel Smith. He was woeful.

Are you basing that off the boundary rider's comment, or were you at the ground?

I'm fairly sure Smith was on him from the start.

Like would we really put Salem, our distributor and loose defender, on Charlie Cameron?

By the way, even if Smith only was on him after the first 3 goals, he's not the reason Cameron was quiet from there. He was quiet because they couldn't get the ball into their forward half. But he was dangerous every time he went near it.

all those saying smith was beaten by cameron - had 2 kicked on him in 3 quarters? thought he did well personally - the match-up of salem on cameron for the first quarter was ordinary

only likely change would be hunt out for bowey, but bowey would be very unlucky

Goodwin said in his presser that “most” players had a good night and he also noted that Hunt is very likely to come into selection consideration which means they have a some thinking to do.
Very obvious Hunt is in if fit for Smith.

No he and a few people are basing it off the clueless commentators. As they were waiting to bounce the footy Smith was standing right next Cameron.

Smith got his pants pulled by Cameron. No is no other way to describe this.

Are you for real was i at the ground suggest you get off the sauce, was you there, as for Salem it is time to take the diaper off soft as melted butter.

Why would a Smith be out? I thought he played well and kept Cameron quiet after quarter time?

T Mac may be in trouble. But who do you bring in?? He did not going tonight.

the young blokes struggled at times. I reckon Goody will back in Bowey etc as it’s great experience

Can anyone who was at the ground tell us if Salem or Smith was on Cameron at the start of the game?

So now your not sure but you said he was which one is it?

This is the contest before Cameron's third goal. Neither Smith (right, next to Berry) or Salem (with ball) are on Cameron (off to the left somewhere). Hard to know who was supposed to be on him here.

Dazzle, I  normally hold similar views to you but we may need to agree to disagree. He did make some blues but I wouldn’t categorise that as fumbly for three quarters. I actually thought he was growing in confidence as the game progressed. I liked his game and there’s plenty of upside.

I said I believed Smith went to Cameron at the first bounce and I was surprised the boundary rider said Salem was on him.

I've now gone back and taken a look at the footage and I can't see Salem on Cameron for any of his three early goals, but I can see Smith on him for two of them.

Are you sure you saw Salem running with Cameron? It just doesn't make sense to me.

There is no chance Salem was on Cameron. Salem hasn’t done a lock down defensive role all year. Why the fudge would he start in a final against one of the best small forwards in the game?
If he was near him at times it’s due to team defense and Smith losing the man in the contest.

Viney talked about role-playing being at the heart of the 2021 Dees gameplan, giving specific praise to Brayshaw.

TMac was being manned by Harris Andrews, who is the Jake Lever of the Lions, and he had zero impact. I'm not sure Andrews took 1 intercept mark. He didn't come across once in front of B Brown, Fritsch etc... So as far as role playing goes, that is a win. I admit, TMac is looking a bit like a spoon pouring treacle and might lose his spot if we meet GWS.

But for me, we have settled on a Brown /TMac / Jackson rotation of tall forwards and we won a final. Can't see it needing to be changed.

Yeah don't get me wrong it might seem I'm harsh on the kid, but I said during the week he was one who concerned me due to inexperience and not finding a match up against their small forwards.

He'll be a 200 gamer, there's no doubt. But I still have some high concerns with his spot in the team.

Thought Smith was clearly on Cameron for the first 2, but the first one he had to go for the aerial contest. Relies on his team mates to cover the ground ball.

3rd goal not sure.

Free kick goal was rubbish, but a more experienced defender doesn’t get sucked in.

Allowed Cameron a simple mark to set up the Daniher shot too.

Im a Joel fan but he still stops to think which costs him half a yard. That half a yard kills you more than lack of speed.

I stand to be corrected but all I saw all night was Cameron kicking goals on Smith and Smith giving away free kicks to Cameron.

I have no issue if Smith gets another game as he’s a good intercept marker and has terrific pace for his size. But he was pantsed tonight IMO.

  • T Mac has to stay in, did little but we can't have BBB marking up the ground kicking to Fritsch or Jackson alone
  • Would keep Bowey in. He actually improved after his errors - could have easily dropped his head but improved from it. Like his upside better than Smith's that's for sure

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
