Jackson for Cerra and their first rounder.

I would probably still say no.

Cerra is the type of player we should be targeting. But we have no real trade bait. I’d offer up Brayshaw, but that wouldn’t nearly be enough. Jackson or Rivers would be off the table. Not sure we have any real possibilities aside from Gus, and possibly Weid.

Why on earth would we trade Gus? Cerra is a good player but 750k!?

we need to use F/A to round out the edges on our list so we can go for back to back flags. NO SELLING THE FARM

If 750k is what carlton need to pay to get him there is no way we need to pay that much.

Gus + our 2022 1st rounder???

Edit. That would be Gus and pick around 18. What did we pay for Lever? Did it end up being a pick 10 and 18?

Jackson is absolutely off limits

They wouldn’t do it.

Why tf would we do it? I'd back in JT to pick up a Cerra calibre mid even with a late 1st.

Now you are talking.

Cerra is an excellent user of the football. He improves a big weakness for us, as that third mid who can execute. Jordon may eventually be it, I doubt a late first in 2022 fits our timeline. We need that midfielder next year. Offloading Gus would be good as he is a turnover merchant. If we can move him on for something that opposite - someone who improves our efficiency, it would be a massive get.

Answer this:

If, if Cerra nominated us and a contract amount was agreed upon by MFC, what would we be prepared to give up?

Is he a better option on the wing than Gus? Would our current 2nd (Brisbane?) and future 1st get it done? Can't see Weid wanting to head west

We won't be trading Gus.

The hardest thing to open is a closed mind.

Maybe he won't be traded, however only a handful are untradable. Gus is not on that list.

Gus has a bro at Freo and family in WA.

My mind's not closed, you're just writing drivel.

It's extremely clear that Gus is integral to the fabric of our core. If we were stupid, we'd trade him and risk undermining the culture and togetherness we've worked so hard to create, but we're not.

Did you notice which award his team mates backed him for yesterday? He won't be traded unless he wants to go, which I can't see happening.

Ok AF, so if Cerra were to nominate us and Freo sussed out Gus we'd say 'thanks but no thanks', not available because it will compromise our "togetherness"??? Hey Freo, how about a crap 2nd rounder and a bunch of fringe players? ...Rhetorical comment, of course

I doubt he will be traded, but stranger things have happened during trade week. IMO Cerra is a good step up from Gus and would definitely improve us.

You don't 'upgrade' clear best 22 players, it's poor list management.

i.e You don't trade out Gus (and picks) for Cerra, even if Cerra may be a 10 or 20% upgrade on a wing. Exchanging one decent best 22 player for one good one presents a negligible difference unless you're talking about a generational type of talent you're getting back in return who will be in your top few players.

You trade out picks which are unknown quantities which you never truly 'owned' in the first place ideally - which we won't have.

FWIW, I'd rather find the next untapped Langdon, or Amon for a 2nd rounder than pay an absurd amount for a player whose reputation largely lies on being taken at pick 5 a few years ago.

Apparently Cerra is not asking for the reported $750k.

This is what Freo offered but he is really wanting to get back home & he a bit more realistic on his worth (according to Gerrard Healy)

Nice footballer but our ball use is not the issue it once was.

Is he really what we need?

Adding Bowey in with Salem gives as another great user off HB, Rivers has a nice long kick, May is a beauty, Petty & Lever more than serviceable.

It will be interesting to see how everything pans out after the season.

Onward we go...

Cerra would only be behind Clarry, Trac and Max in our midfield/centreline  and he's 21. His best is yet to come. That's a massive plus.

If we win the flag im sure our choices for trades and FA will improve substantially.

Would he be a fantastic addition to our team? Well ofc he would but right now we are up to our eyeballs in the premiership hunt so there cant be a whole lot wrong with our list atm. The midfield is not our biggest priority and we havent much to give picks-wise.  If it was a fit, young KPF like Harry McKay i would be all for offering up the price required.

Right now, Cerra needs us more than we need him.

WA demon, don't think anything is in this. It's crazy with Jackson's recent rise a lot of Eagles and Dockers fans talking about him as the next big target.

We need to lockdown Jacko, Rivers and Kozzy above all bar Oliver now that we've got Trac, Salem, Viney and Gawn locked in for life basically.

I can’t see any players in the Dees being “wantaway” yet. Jackson on the G&G podcast appears to love Melbourne (the city) - no rush to head home.

I’ll bet this year has cemented he, Rivers and Koz.

sounds like the culture at the club is a huge plus at present.

players will be wanting to get to the MFC I reckon.

Our recruiting has been pretty sound the last few years.  Really targeted needs, except perhaps for sideshow who fell out of change at the Roos and we were able to make that stick.  Cerra Certainly would be a great addition, but we haven’t got the free capital (picks) to make it happen.  Can’t see anyone in the current 18 being traded unless they wanted to.  Culture is king, so no one is getting marched. If he asked to come to us, then we could find a deal, but I don’t think we should try to manufacture one that rips our guts out

Sure, but we won't be trading important players, so unless we can get a deal done another way... it's not happening.

I'd also have Viney ahead of Cerra in bigger matches.

Relative to other starting midfielders in the afl, he doesn't win his own ball, he doesn't accumulate a truck ton of possession, he doesn't hit the score board or have elite disposal efficiency.  He's not a great mark.  He's a poor man Josh Kelly, who fwiw was tearing it up in his fourth year.

Playing full minutes, he went three consecutive games this year without laying a tackle. Can u imagine the match day threads.  Lol.

Massive overrating going on here.

But he's young and from another team.

Doesn't that automatically qualify him as desirable?

I think we've moved on from that mentality.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
