Thanks for your reply.
I would also be interested to hear from anyone else on Demonland who is Tasmanian regarding the same question.
Will you swap teams? Will you buy membership to one or both clubs?

Hi Jaded, I’m Irish, lived in Melbourne for 10 years and have lived south of Hobart.
so not Tasmanian at all 😂
Melbourne will remain my number one team I pretty sure but I will also go to the new teams games and hope they are a great success.
I do feel that the majority of people here that support a team on the mainland will have no problem just following the new Tassie team. By and large I don’t feel most people here are die hard fans of their chosen AFL team and will be keen to get behind a new completely Tassie team.

All of his points are very valid.

Huh what points?

Media rights? That wasn't even a point, barely a sentence.... and eyeballs?  560k Tassie people, thats at least 2 million eyeballs we have (and Tasmanians can make that joke!)

Go home factor?  seriously thats been something happening for years, it's not new, but more importantly it isn't valid in that he states Qld and WA players want to go home, hmm, so do Vic players and SA players. But apparently this is somehow more valid because of Tassie and his dislike of the state.

The issue is more the tone of 'Imagine 20 year olds sent to Tassie wanting to stay past 2 years' Tasmania is no longer a convict settlement... that view is rude and pathetic and as I called out wrong.

Today is a hugely significant day for the AFL, for Tasmania, the people, the former players and it's just tiring listening to someone constantly troll and slag off Tasmania or the team that is coming.

Why can’t they be called the “Tassie Tigers”?.

After all, the VFL has set the precedent with Richmond and Werribee, both teams have The Tigers as their mascot?

Man I am glad our core guns will be towards the end of their career by 2028.

The big money to lure players to Tassie will be hard to resist.  Kozzi and JVR probably the ones that might get hit up

I favour the club being named Hobart to match cities or suburbs which applies to most clubs.

I like the Hobart Islanders.

Hobart Dishwashers?

The Hobart Monas?

7 games in hobart, 4 games in launceston, pre-season games in penguin

they'll be named after the entire state

if the AFL give them the GWS type draft concessions it will be hard to access top tier draft picks

Tasmania Devils theme song (to the tune of Little Peter Rabbit Had a Fly Upon his nose)

We're the Tassie Devils, we play with heart and pride.

We'll forge a great tradition that can never be denied.

We play it tough, we play to win, we are the premier side.

And we'll bring the flag back home!

Like Tassie players of old, we'll always represent you.

Our faith is in eachother, that's what will always see us through.

Don't you ever write us off, no matter what we do.

And we'll bring the flag back home!

Tassie Devils forever. Like brothers* we will stick together. We're never beaten, no not ever. And we'll bring the flag back home.

We'll bring the flag back home!

*Substitute with sister for AFLW team.

Here's the tune if you need to hear it. Casey Scorpions old song.

The entire state is an island.

Appreciate all your thoughts on this Ouch. We've all got our own opinions on it and how it would work but it is good to hear points of view from people passionate about the Dees AND Tassie.

2027-2029 is when I expect our drop off to come... gotta be really clever with managing our list heading into this period, or we are looking at another decade in the wilderness.

Might mean that we don't bundle up our early picks this year and get in as much talent as possible.

Not to mention how important it is that we win another flag or two in the next 2-3 years while our list is primed.

I trust our list management to adequately plan and prepare for that period.

Yes we are in much better hands than when GWS and GC came in.

Plus everyone now has the benefit of hindsight with how they managed the list when those two came into the competition. So everyone will be better prepared I think.

I would also think that the AFL will forced Tassie to on-trade at least some of their early picks for established players, rather than just go to the draft. Can't have a team full of 18 year olds.

Yes and No...

We have any number of Father Son  opportunities coming through  over coming years.  Granted not all fly as high as the parent.  In a fashion we might have them at a discount if any are promising.  We can only offer the picks we have... and everyones is effectively diluted and/or devalued because of the priority picks going to the Dishwashers.

We've made an art of finding talent.

Tbh...im not that concerned.. We'll still have a very good core to our list.

Will they follow the GWS or the GCS drafting model is the big question

IMO GWS system is better but takes longer

GCS offers a better look from day one

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.
