The way some of these special comments guys are dressed is beyond me. Are you trying to be cool? Coz you failed. Are you trying to look professional? Coz you failed. Are you trying to look like a vegan hipster from Brunswick? Great success!

PS- if Luke Darcy is growing a middle aged man mullet, I am starting a petition to pixilate his head while on screen.

I was in Vicpol  for 12 years, he was hated by everyone, and universally described as a thug who would whack a bloke in cuffs, and other gutless stuff. Was a shame the toe cutters never managed to charge him. Lucky for him his era was pre camera phone.

He wasn’t popular at all with the blokes he did National Service with either

He was Lucky that Richmond stopped him going to Vietnam

Yes, I knew a knockabout bloke from Moorabin. Reckons Rex used to bash him regularly for not doing much.

Wow there certainly is a lot of hate going on in this thread. Personally I think most commentators do a good job but thought I would list the few that do my head in.

LOL that’s quite a lengthy list coming from someone who says commentators in general do a good job. ?

I detected a whiff of irony in that short list.

Ricciuto does my head in with his whiny nasally one-eyed flag waving support of all that is South Australia. Says nothing insightful and offers nothing other than support of both SA teams.

I mentioned this last night but Jobe Watson was praising our off season recruitment of Ed Langdon last summer.

I will say though that Justin Leppitsch has been a good appointment and is light yeas ahead of the other special commentators in the Ch 7 stable.

Your comments on JLeppitsch have been confirmed over the past few viewings. Actually speaks with authorative knowledge and does not waste our time being fickle and 'entertaining'. Rather than siding with the boys onfield, he is one of the boys.

You ought to try to live here! It's a daily dose of double-barreled prejudice and loathing when it comes to footy. I was even asked to take my Demons cap off my head at golf, playing a comp round with 3 Crows and 2 Port fans. (They could see that I was well ahead on the scorecard.) All was in jest, of course, but underlying the banter was a plethora of ill-will for anyone coming from the east of the State border.

Victoria does not exist ... for any good reason at all, except making the best draught beer and having good-looking shielas.

Where has my youth gone? When I cared for Celtic, and played 4th and Inches on the Pc in the 90's....

Anyway, for those that still watch American sports - NHL, NFL, NBA - does our commentary reflect what occurs over there?

In the sense of the commentary boxes on the field, or the 'banter'? Or is that quite an Australian thing to do?

I just heard a commentator on the Dogs and Swans use the jargon of DNA... is this sort of language used in the US? Or is it the modern Australian way?

the nba is atrocious for all the in-jokes from the likes of shaq, sir charles, etc. and then the occasional insightful commentary from the likes of doris burke who - unlike shaq in particular - actually watches the game

Quoting myself coz I just realised why BT is less annoying today. It’s got to do with who else is in commentary with him. Nigel and Jimmy Bartel don’t encourage him in his buffoonery, the others do. In particular, Brayshaw.

NBA is far superior, but of course they have a lot more competition for spots and don't seem to obsess over having ex players on their panels.
Marv Albert who is retiring this year is unreal.

I got into the NHL over the playoffs and thought their commentary was fine.
What I notice the difference is, is that they are way more focused on the play-by-play commentary rather than trying to be a jovial, funny bloke or point out dumb [censored] like what BT does.

I couldn't believe listening to the Ch 7 commentary today - thought to myself 'why on earth have they got Tony Shaw back commentating on games' only to then discover it was Heath Shaw.... same difference!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
