Some news now coming out about our Round 18 clash vs Hawthorn:

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/crowd-caps-set-to-increase-for-afl-games-in-victoria-20210706-p5875x.html

This article says that:

  1. Fremantle v Geelong is likely to be on a Thursday night (if true, that will be five of their six games post-bye on a Thursday/Friday night and the following week they play Richmond so gear up for another one)
  2. Richmond v Brisbane is likely to be Friday night, but apparently our game vs Hawthorn is also being considered for that timeslot
  3. All clubs have agreed to one five-day break during the season

I suspect they are considering our game for the Friday night because that round has three MCG games (Collingwood v Carlton is the third) and so one has to be on a Friday night, barring any double-headers. And with Richmond on Sunday this week it uses up their only agreeable five-day break, whereas we're on Thursday and Hawthorn's on Saturday.

I reckon this means we'll be Saturday afternoon, with Collingwood v Carlton on Sunday afternoon.

i got a headache just trying to read that let alone understand it,no wonder i drink

Isn't it time they raised the crowd numbers

sooo i guess you used to be uncertain and now you are not sure

Would be flabbergasted if they gave the Dees v Hawks the Friday night.

Richmond V Brisbane would’ve been earmarked for Friday night since the fixture was released last summer.

And I’d expect Melbourne V Bulldogs (round 21) would’ve been earmarked for Friday night since about round 5.

Bulldogs game is Round 20 NOT 21  !!!

Round 18

Thursday, July 15
Fremantle v Geelong at Optus Stadium, 6.10pm AWST, Seven

Friday, July 16
Richmond v Brisbane at MCG, 7.50pm AEST, Seven

Saturday, July 17
GWS Giants v Sydney Swans at TBC, 1.45pm AEST, Fox
Melbourne v Hawthorn MCG, 4.35pm AEST, Fox
Gold Coast v Western Bulldogs at Metricon Stadium, 4.35pm AEST, Fox
St Kilda v Port Adelaide at Marvel Stadium, 7.25pm AEST, Seven

Sunday, July 18
North Melbourne v Essendon at Marvel Stadium, 1.10pm AEST, Fox
Collingwood v Carlton at MCG, 3.20pm AEST, Seven
Adelaide v West Coast at Adelaide Oval, 4.10pm ACST, Fox

Why are there two games starting at 4.35pm?

Happy to avoid the Sunday graveyard slot. Or Sunday in general.

I would say we’d play GC on Saturday the following week so our game against the Dogs can get the Friday night prime time slot.

4:35 time slot not bad means the lights at the Gee will be on from the get go will be just like a night game but with a much earlier finish. Like it.

Yep I think a Saturday twilight or night game against GC is a near-certainty, they play most of their home games in those slots.

Friday night vs the Dogs the week after is a near-certainty I'd say: even if the AFL is still doing Thursday night games by then, the AFLPA has said they only want clubs to have one five-day break and we're having ours this week.

Any reason why this games isn’t Saturday arvo considering there’s already another Saturday twilight game at the same time?

Exactly - two Saturday Twilight games, one Saturday night and one Saturday arvo makes no sense. Crap timeslot, I hate Twilight games.

Love a Saturday twilight game. I’ll be there for sure

I understand it's the pink lady game so maybe that had something to do with it being a twilight game??

An afternoon or night game would've made more sense.

Shocking timeslot, but any games we get to go this year are a bonus. A 25K crowd would be a good result given where the two teams are at.

I find it amusing that every time there is a discussion about days and timeslots, there seems to be equal numbers of people for and against any timeslot proposed.

The possible exception is the 4.40 pm Sunday slot when played in Melbourne which I think nobody likes.

I'm hoping for a 1.45 Saturday v GC. Will be there providing the Tasmanian Government removes all travel restrictions for Queensland before then.

You can almost guarantee that Clarkson will announce he is stepping down next week and his last game as coach will be v us at the MCG round 18.

Sorry, been reading too much of the Demonland pessimist posts....sack everyone.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.

  • PREGAME: Richmond

The Dees are back at the MCG on Thursday for the annual blockbuster ANZAC Eve game against the Tigers. Can the Demons win back to back games for the first time since Rounds 17 & 18 last season? Who comes in and who goes out?
