Several other times kicks fell away from Tom, Weid and Jacko. It’s a core part of our game plan and we can’t get it wrong, especially if we’re playing such a tall forward line.

Our forwards also have to be aware of the deliberate rule and know their job is to help the backs. Melksham sat and watched a ball roll out that he could’ve touched. Get over and get it.

Petracca, Oliver and others turned the ball over in the corridor in the last quarter far too many times. It wasn’t helping the plan to just kill the clock. If we can ice games we can rest our best players so they don’t miss weeks.

And JJ, love your effort, but you aren’t kicking centre square goals from 60 brother. The clearance was beautiful, back yourself to find a hit up. Or go 15 out so it isn’t rushed.

The guys were great last night, but there’s still a lot of sloppy stuff that can be fixed pretty easily. Small things that can make a big difference if we get them right.

Every game will have some errors.

If not the ones you point out, others will occur.

Tmac breaks tackles regularly, 

Gawny can take shots if in the area, as can anyone. Some don't come off.

Thought some of the play on calls were very tough, inconsistent calls across the season.

Melky is happy halving the contest, or slowing down the play. Can get away with it sometimes. Inconsistent umpire calls across the season.

Teams haven't been able to hurt us much from turnovers, let them take it on.

JJ still young, again back yourself, though he will learn.

What gets a win is our plans, structures and the application of that, not the little stuff!

I see our improvements coming  from holding the marks, improving our accuracy when kicking set shots, getting more drive off the backflanks, switching the ball a bit more as well as changing the angle of delivery a bit and controlling the tempo (go faster or slower sometimes, so to keep them guessing and to reduce or create run ons) .

These aren't just isolated errors though, it's some I've seen multiple times.

TMc's fend worked well against the Swans but unless he's running in to space it's not worth the risk, in a crowded forward 50 he should give quick handballs. Same goes for Gawn trying to kick unless it's from a stoppage. He should be a handball first player.

The deliberate issue has occurred multiple times with us. We don't appeal for it enough and we don't try to influence the ump by a forward running to the ball to keep it in or look like they are close to it. 

The turnovers were in the last quarter and when defending a lead. I don't think we really played like we learnt much from last week. We have to ice games. It's pretty silly that we're 10-1 but haven't really taken the chance to move guys around in the last quarter to get some experience in different roles and to rest up the best players.

JJ's made a great start to his career and I love his no fuss playing style but now is the time for him to put some work in to his kicking and decision making. Not over summer. Not 3 years from now. Centre bounces should be pretty easy. The forwards should be predictable. There should be a target area for where the long kick lands. It was by far our best centre bounce game of the season but we didn't take full advantage.

We gave away some goals in the time on period of the 2nd quarter. I thought at the time we didn't learn from last week. In the third we got smart in time on. Can only assume the coaches got into them and reminded them of the weeks learning's.

Draws two three defenders which opens up space for others if he can release it, sometimes he doesn't. I reckon, keep taking them on.

Agreed. Trouble is we’ve had so little practice at it so far!  It’s good to feel the areas we can and have to improve when we’re 10-1 and sitting on top.

If they are going to call those, then all the forward that step inside, to better their angle should be called play on. They do it regularly to better the angle and try and squid the umpire. Play on you reckon, that will help the game.

The straight line from the mark or free is hard to find. A bit tough to call play on. Forwards regularly have to be set by the umpires, why not the other players. Walking back, that should be the line and when you step off that line then play on. It should be the line the player sets (within reason) not what the umpires imagine unless they go and set it as with the forwards. 

They should all have the same rules all around the field. 

If the forwards want the 30 seconds they should have to have a genuine shot at the goals, or a free is paid.

One time for Gawny was more about time, wasn't it. He was given hardly any!

What a great win. But strangely, I have been more nervous watching this year. 
We did many things brilliantly but there is one obvious area where we need to improve, and it’s not hard to do so...
We drop too many marks. Last night the regular offenders were Gawn, Lever, Jackson, Weideman (and probably others). Big guys who get their hands on the ball and don’t hold on. Our new boy, Petty, showed them how to do it. Well done Harry.

Would love to see some options lead out on the 45 when we have the ball carrier running towards goal from centre break. And if they do kick it directly towards goal, have them pull the kick to land it 15m out rather than kick it to the goal line.

I totally agree that they aren’t consistent with calling players around the ground to play on when they go back behind the player on the mark. The first one that I remember Max doing I though he had literally straight-lined it from goal, the second I thought was harsh but I could understand it. 

The balancing act is that the AFL is trying to make this player standing on the mark rule have a bit of both ways about it to stop the marking player from taking too many liberties. In contrast I though TMac had clearly gone off his mark for his long-range shot at 3 quarter time. 

I really don’t feel like the umpires are given good instructions, particularly when it comes to HTB/incorrect disposal. I feel like they’ve been told if there has been a sufficient attempt to get rid of it in a legal way it doesn’t matter if the ball comes out improperly. The doggies players in particular do A LOT of throws and they were wrapped up in tackles where they were spun twice and given an eternity to get rid of it but still not pinged. 

Annoys the hell out of me.

I thought he played a role, did a couple of really nice things and once again we looked quite dangerous coming out of the middle when he was in the ruck. To be honest though I was more enthralled with the way the team as a whole was playing particularly with some great performances by Brayshaw, Harmes, Petracca, Oliver etc to nitpick over some seeming negatives of some players.

Petty came into the game and did well as did weiderman. Harmes did a great job on Libba and I thought Spargo was great and Brayshaw came into the game really well. Love seeing Tommy kick the goals and Rivers was outstanding.

I disagree. I reckon without a 1-point loss last week we might not have given as complete performance as we did on Friday.

yeah i saw that too. my first instinct is i wanted weid to be a bit stronger. it made me miss viney tbh. one of these days, and it may well be against the lions, a side is going to try physically intimidate us ..and i don’t mean at or around the ball. weid, jackson, tmac, lever are all wonderful players but they wouldn’t strike physical fear into a mouse.

And besides, nothing like a bitter loss to instill some motivation and make sure we keep our feet on the ground and stay focused. We responded in style last night. Doggies had a cakewalk last week against the saints which was no preparation at all before playing us.

The Adelaide loss, although unfair, may have been the reset we needed for the second half of the year. Goodwin dismissed any “crying over spilt milk” immediately after the game, and the team against the Dogs was as motivated and switched on as any this year. It may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
