    During the pandemic, I've read and heard the most, shall we say, idiotic and plain ridiculous commentary I've read or heard in my life. Most of it has come from the anti-vaxxers, next in line is the rubbish from a man called Scomo and his band of merry men and women, and the various commentators on Sky News, and the Murdoch Press are not far behind.

    The bottom line, is that there is not one person on the planet who knows exactly what's going on with this virus, let alone one person who knows for sure how to deal with it. We are in the midst of a very dark unknown, and it just makes me so sick and tired and angry that it now seems to be reduced to the phoney baloney called Christmas and the urgent need to 'have a holiday'. I guess this is the sum of how spoiled rotten first world countries respond to any inconvenience to their pampered sense of entitlement. 

    In the meantime, and for the record, my arm is till sore from my Monday booster jab, I get very tired very quickly, but so frigginvillia what?

    In the meantime, the 'Free Marketers' still feel affronted by the notion of compulsory mask wearing and so it goes, the demented ramblings of a so-called democtaric system which has so many echoes of the fall of Rome.

    Reading a UK non medical forum and the general vibe is that for the vaccinated Omicron symptoms are typically a runny nose and a scratchy throat. Hopefully they stay that way

    Had the test, lucky to live in the country with easy access.

    It hit me that this inefficient and inconvenient process is only occurring because there are some people without vaccination.

    If the vulnerable are protected with vaccination and the most fragile with additional isolation and distancing then should they get symptoms they go to hospital.

    initially when there was no vaccination available and confusion over the best etc it was necessary to have testing and tracking.

    Now with most protected only those who choose to not have vaccination who will get worst outcomes.

    Testing is almost useless as you can be negative at test time and go to the supermarket or chemist and pick it up. We are all constantly at risk of picking it up, unavoidable. Vaccination means I won't get too crook. Let the people who are unvaccinated get crook and take their chances at getting treated. If intensive beds are short they go to the back of the quee they have made their choice. I'm happy to take my chances with no mask and self distancing.

    I would support this if the same rules were applied to smoking lung cancer victims, or alcoholic liver failure patients.

    Until then, I'm not sure anyone should be denied medical care based on vaccination status.

    Thanks for posting. They can't be celebrating Christmas as Jesus was not born yet, so they must be celebrating Santa. Demonstone was correct!

    Fair point. I'm happy to apply the same conditions.

    i worked in health industry and decisions are made all the time to prioritise treatment and it's usually based on skills available and often ability to pay.

    i strongly support our universal health system but do need to get the best value of the highly skilled and valuable people and the most efficient and effective use of the resources. We can and have achieved great outcomes from our health system.

    Some of the problems with the pandemic were ideological where the Federal government ignores the effective hospital and health systems and chose to use drs and pharmacists as a preference. Inefficient and less effective.

    Another way of putting it, F.D, Christmas is the day when families who mostly dislike each other gather around a table, eat too much, drink too much and listen to mental midgets crooning Jingle Bells. Late in the afternoon, some blokes fall asleep, others continue to argue about who got the smallest piece of pav and the homicidal bitchin, to quote Leonardo Cohen, continues. In the meantime, the floor is littered with wrapping paper, presents are opened and taken home to be collected by the next dumpster in the neighborhood. In the meantime, Santa keeps floggin his reindeers and I'm still waiting for my electric train set 65 years later.

    I haven't had my 4th vaccination shot yet but I can contribute to the conversation.

    Interesting that no politician speaks of either PNG or the Solomon Islands.

    Both within almost a stones throw of our Northern borders and vaccination rates among the lowest in the world

    Given the billions spent in Oz on this pandemic you might think that a billion spent vaccinating our near neighbours might be a good investment.

    Sorry rjaj, didn't mean to be. I did say the most vulnerable and fragile may need greater support. If we had a government which displayed any compassion that would not be a problem.

    If they can't be vaccinated they would be aware and taking self preservation, if they get the worst outcomes they would be a greater priority for health care than those who had not vaccinated.

    This is not a forum where every possible circumstance can be outlined. This is still a very sensitive issue. Suffice to say that the federal government appears to have learnt nothing. Quarantine still an issue, vaccination still an issue. Incompetence revealed at every turn.

    We already are helping the Solomon Islands.

    Problem is we can't give them money to help themselves as Solomon Island politicians are world renowned for their epic levels of corruption when handling public funds. Lived there for 4 years and witnessed it first hand.

     

    We are doing enough for the Solomons and I suspect PNG also.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie? 
      Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG. Unfortunately, performances like these went against the grain of what Melbourne has been producing from virtually midway through 2024 and extending right through to the present day. This is a game between two clubs who have faltered over the past couple of years because their disposal efficiency is appalling. Neither of them can hit the side of a barn door but history tells us that every once in a while such teams have their lucky days or come up against an opponent in even worse shape and hence, one of them will come up trumps in this match.

Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
