Yes, but in a mandated vaccinated landscape, the impacts to the body are less severe and the impacts are therefore less and a risk based approach should not see the game impacted.

Quite true.

My post was to update DL on the impact in the AFL. 

Only an infected person has to isolate.  Close contacts isolate only until they receive a negative result.  Hence why Voss and McPherson weren't at the draft last night.

 In due course all clubs will have someone test positive.

Clubs will have to take extra precautions at training to ensure a player who subsequently tests positive doesn't spread it to other players.  At the moment it is off season so minimal close contacts/risk of spreading in the playing group.

I would have thought all clubs have had protocols in place for years to keep people with highly transmissable diseases, such as influenza or even the common cold, away. That Covid can be more dangerous is without doubt, but the procedures in place to keep infectious people away shouldn't have to change. 

And the overseas model of players missing games through covid is what will happen here

It seems they just get on with it and in one game last year the Denver Broncos (NFL) took the field with a makeshift Quarter Back

More so a case of you win some, you lose some but the reaction will be different in footy re Star players missing big games and finals (especially a GF)

And covid will be popping up everywhere regardless of all the precautions in place.  Of course, many contracting covid will be fully vaccinated

He tested negative on his return to Hong Kong, but tested positive on 13 November while in quarantine.

They did and worked well when the rest of us were in lockdown and they were in bubbles.  The number of positive cases in the AFL world is increasing which is really no surprise now that we have opened up.  Apparently, a positive case went to last night's draft at Marvel.  Probably fromone of the clubs who have staff or players diagnosed as positive:  Essendon, Richmond, Carlton.

But the show will go on:  afl-intent-on-forging-on-in-2022-despite-prospect-of-regular-covid-19-cases

As long as a club can field a team they will be expected to front up and play.

In a way it will be harder for clubs to negotiate the covid landscape next year than during the lockdown years.  One would think a rapid test before anyone enters a club building or club training will be sensible and mandatory.

The UK has just closed its borders to 6 African countries.  Not time to panic but it is time to act (and swiftly)

We should follow suit with regards to our borders

Singapore, Japan, Netherlands & soon enough the whole EU and probably the USA as well (cutting off flights from 6 African nations)

Morrison is saying that there is nothing to be concerned about unless there is something to be concerned about.

We are a highly vaccinated country but you don't invite trouble.  There's a chance this new variant could lessen the effectiveness of vaccines (apart from a whole lot of other factors)

panic is what we do its natural driven by media and ignorance

It's still early day, it's been identified but not a lot known how a highly vaccinated population will resist or slow spread. Just caution keep away from anyone whose come from SA in the last week

Isn't it about time this thread was taken off the football board and put on the General Board?

It's not about politics or which side one supports ... it's about governance

We all deserve better.  One side pulls the trigger too quickly and the other sits on their hands too much

Each issue is separate so in my view, we should be closing our borders to these African nations where this new variant has emerged. Morrison needs to use some common sense.  What is the rest of the world doing? 

And of course it's footy related because if we need any more lockdowns possibly dealing with a stronger strain of covid,  we're going to need hubs etc and we go through the whole process again and again.  Another interrupted season

With the Delta variant only and because of our high vaccination rate, we've got a chance at managing the whole situation

The World Health Orginisation has now identified the new strain as a variant of concern ... calling it 'Omicron'

And closing the border to 6 African nations is not panicking

The travel bans on Southern Africa are coming thick and fast.

Pfizer has announced that it can tweak its formula and produce a modified vaccine in 100 days if necessary.

Meanwhile I shall continue watching the 2021 season on replay. Appropriate perhaps that this week's match is against Adelaide.

Could this be the "variant we had to have."

The calibre of our political elite isn’t great but by international standards we’ve done pretty well with respect to Covid. Yes there have been stuff-ups. The hotel quarantine debacle and slow vaccine roll-out the obvious examples but we’ve done much better than most.

I will say that people are tired and angry (might explain why we’re all fired up here this morning). Going back to lock downs is not an option and I believe the protests will swell if the Vic govt tries to do so. A younger colleague of mine is struggling because his dad had a heart attack due to stress from trying to make ends meet. They own a restaurant. There are people who can’t have surgery or treatment for non-covid conditions. Psych wards have been flat out busy. I know people who attend the protests. One is an anti-vaxxer. His brain is addled but the others are normal people with genuine concerns for their businesses, their childrens education and the manner in which this new pandemic legislation is being bull dozed into law

Covid is serious. I’m not trying the downplay it but there are other important issues as well. We seem to be fixated on Covid to the exclusion of all other concerns.

it should be driven by the country cho and advisors

The issue at hand is whether we ban travel from 6 African countries

The to and fro with regards to nearly everything else belongs in the general discussion area
