(not highlighting you) there is just too much finger pointing, blame gaming, interstate slanging off and blatant political point scoring. the country as a whole is really doing a pretty good job compared to almost any other country in the whole world. this wholeĀ covid thing is just such uncharted waters where there is no single best way to solve everything. sure things could have been done betterĀ some mistakes avoided and preferably less idiots amongst ourselves. every state has had a different mix of problems and advantages.Ā  Ā I think all the goverments, stateĀ and federal, have done a reasonably good job to keep our statistics so low on an international comparison.

a liitle bit more of a positiveĀ overall perspective and less obsessiveness over the nitpicky details would benefit us all

sorry to rant, but the point scoring is really [censored] me off

Leaving aside the starting point I agree daisy.

I was just saying to a mate yesterday that state v state angst had been awful.

It's what happens when you have someone in Canberra that seems to think division is the way to lead.

I worded that very poorly. IĀ wasĀ referring to the risk of community transmission,Ā as in if you happen to have a day of 100 cases it is obviously better if theyā€™re all isolating as opposed to being out in the community, risking further infections. Thatā€™s what I was getting at, Iā€™m sorry if people took itĀ thatĀ way in terms of me thinking that dying from this is okay,Ā becauseĀ thatā€™s not what I was referring to at all.Ā

Or when a country has a Federation where much of the power lies with States who can't even agree with each other, have media spats and are hell bent on doing their own thing.Ā  Our Federation isĀ unique and it significantly determines how policy is made and implemented.

How can the ratio of infectedĀ people in full isolation go from 73% to 45% in the space of a day?

Ok, I understand the point re federation.

The big issue for me at the start of this whole thing was that when a national cabinet was formed, virtually a war cabinet if you like Morrison didn't invite the opposition to be a part of it.

It would have been a show of true leadership but instead the politics got in the way.

It is not unusual in times of crisis to have both sides of politics working together toĀ find solutions. Unfortunately in these times partisanship has won the fight over communities working together. Just look at all the selfishness out there, yes and look at how the politics and point scoring has been a part of this pandemic from the start. Going all the way back to that DH in the US.

The politics of division...

Scomo and Albo...FFS is that as good as we've got. They say we get what we deserve, I'm not sure we deserve this. Maybe we, do, we've all been asleep at the wheel as our democracy withers on the vine.

Curfews and state border protection don't bother me anywhere near as much as this.

The writing is on the wall in Perth, 50 refugees arrived overnight having travelled through Dubai and are quarantining in a hotel in the Perth CBD.

I can see where that will end, given our previous issues with hotel quarantineĀ

Fair points rjay.

Would it have mattered who was on the National Cabinet as the State Premiers went there own separate ways almost immediately.Ā  Premiers from the same side couldn't/can't even agree with each other or adopt similar policies.Ā  It is every man/woman for themselves.Ā  If there was ever any goodwill it is long gone and I suspect having the Leader of the Federal Opposition in the National Cabinet would have made little difference.Ā  He is hardly someone that engenders confidence and leadership, either.

Like you, it worriesĀ me that our choices are Albanese or Morrison.Ā  But if we had a good system of governance, in times of crisis it shouldn't matter.Ā  As it is, with States having the Constitutional power to go their own independent way,Ā any PM of any side of politics is somewhat of a 'lame duck' at the mercy of Premiers and their much relied upon CHO.

Certainly that makes the risk of snap lockout of crowds at Optus much higher.

Wouldn't it be ironic if all states banned crowds and the GF had to be played at an empty MCG!!

Somewhat ironically, for a politician who is recognised more for his political nous than his policy skills, Morrison missed an opportunity. If he had agreed to include the Opposition Leader in his National Cabinet, it would have silenced Albanese as once inside that Cabinet, he would be bound to agree with every decision made. That would have strengthened Morrison's position as he would have had no Federal Opposition public commentary to worry about on this issue.Ā

I keep banging on about this, but anyone waiting for Pfizer instead of AZ should think again. Firstly, read this story which raises the issue of Pfizer's efficacy waning more quickly than AZ.Ā Now, go get whatever's available and don't worry about which one it is. Just get vaccinated!

Canā€™t agree more. If AZ is available to you, speak to your doctor and get yourself jabbed. To be fair though I think thatā€™s the general feeling now amongst people, isnā€™t it interesting that as COVID cases have gone up and and up (particularly in NSW) and so has AZ vaccinations, that we arenā€™t hearing much about any blood clot issues? Could it be that suddenly the media/government arenā€™t as interested in reporting it so closely?

I share your feelings, 5-6Ā months ago (when my planning started) I started the process to get myself and my fiancĆ©e to Australia so that we could get married here as it appeared it would provide us the best opportunity at a ceremony that matched what we would like. Now Iā€™m 3 weeks out from the date weā€™re meant to be getting hitched and it seems like so much of our hard work, planning, and stresses will be all undone. We will get married, and weā€™ll be happy with whatever happens but it just seems like a sick joke that weā€™ve left the UK and theyā€™re open for business while here there just seems to be no real end in sight.Ā

Thatā€™s not even mentioning the frustration that I wonā€™t be able to see my team play live in the finals (possibly the bigĀ dance).Ā

Well first of all - Congrats! I hope the wedding day is fun, and you snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and enjoy it as much as you can.

But I think the bigger question here is did you doubt the Demons finals capabilities by planning for a September wedding, or are you going for a ā€˜month of gloryā€™ concept?Ā

Mate, that is terrible luck. How extremely disappointing for you both.

Who would've thought that the night we all went to the Anzac eve game (85% capacity) that 5 months later footy would fleeĀ Victoria and we'd be watching the finals in lockdown once again....

As did I BBP.

It seems clearĀ that yesterdayā€™s numbers were largely a result of 13 day tests of those that went into isolation at the beginning of this current outbreak.Ā Ā
Ā

But todayā€™s numbers are driven by a new cycle of infections.
Ā

I suspectĀ Melburnians went into last weekend thinking the city was getting on top it. And if you were looking at the numbers and the iso % late last week, you can understand why. See the highlighted section in this graph on the 11-13 August.Ā

6D0984B5-4BEF-4C83-946E-47F815867C8B.thumb.jpeg.3f29ea7a6a121e59e59b7af381188294.jpeg

That prompted a spike in population movement as shown in this graph, a trend in behaviour that isĀ common across all lockdowns, i.e. movement begins to pick up towards the end of lockdown.Ā

049046B0-1754-49D2-A148-813A90536847.thumb.png.efeec293ed42c0b5564d340832a3eb7b.png

Thus these are new infections that haveĀ been out and about this week, seeding a new cycle of infections that will take at least two weeks to bring under control.Ā

Sadly I think this means finals in Melbourne are unlikelyĀ šŸ™

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. Itā€™s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this yearā€™s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.Ā  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.Ā

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old sideā€”the Tigersā€”coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking?Ā I mean by ā€œtheyā€ the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around.Itā€™s no secret that the Demonsā€™ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack.Ā Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryanā€™s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winningĀ 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
