The political machinations at Collingwood

Correct weight @binman

Eddie is a master of PR spin and the maintaining of, and boosting of his good old boys network through his media soap box.

Another two examples of this (directly involving our club) would be when CS was sacked in 2013. Eddie was straight onto Triple M talking about how the Footy World would be a worse place without the caliber of men like Cameron Schwab. I’ll admit some of the vitriol can be over the top about CS, but I wonder if Eddie would actually remember he is a footy journo and go over the record of that regime? Perhaps there was a reason why he’d been sacked? Listening to Ed, you barely would have known.

The other was when he unilaterally took the QB game from us in 2019. I’m not going to say for a second Collingwood had no right to eventually claim the gate for that. Let’s be blunt. Their massive support base is the reason that makes bank and it was very generous for them to give us the profits every year.

However, as we (a club whose profit/loss making potential  is much more volatile than theirs) were the away team in the ANZAC eve match, had just sold our pokies (meaning we needed to find a new revenue stream) and were one year away from COVID (to be fair to Ed, we didn’t know this at the time), it would have been nice to have been given more than 3 months notice before Eddie decided to do this.

In true Eddie form, he started his PR war immediately by claiming that he’d spoken to Bill Guest, and he was going to facilitate this.

Bill Guest hasn’t been on the Melbourne board for a good 20 years, and has been polarizing due to various (and I will clearly state these are potentially defamatory, so I won’t vouch for their veracity) accusations and partisan allegiances. How he would have that sway to talk the board around is beyond me, but it didn’t matter. In the eyes of the casual punter, we were amenable to his proposal, and Collingwood as well as Eddie were totally justified in what they’d done. The PR war was won. Eddie had boosted the profile of his mates, got what he wanted and all was copacetic.

I’d also add that media commentary concerning Adam Goodes and Heritier Lumumba seemed to be a bit too coordinated and consistent for my liking at the time. This was shown during ‘The Last Quarter’ in devastating implied fashion (and made me walk away from the game up until the day Eddie was sacked).

Was it any surprise that ‘Do Better’ explicitly stated that Collingwood had a record of backgrounding to the media against recalcitrant and objecting players who dared to question the bigoted culture of the club?

Had to clean segments up as I get pretty indignant when thinking about Eddie and his shenanigans.

Shocking to hear, he is regarded as some sort of clap happy evangelical leader by the Collingwood faithful.

Wasn’t he paired with some ABC presenter or AGE journo?

Hope any alleged victim gets appropriate counselling/support etc

It has taken me a while to get around to reading this thread. Isn't it a wonderful situation to see the filth beating themselves up. I can't tell you how much I absolutely hate the filth. May they suffer the same if not worse degeneration as essenscum.

McGuire is one of the most self focused people in football and trades on the old school, boys club network of 'mates' to have his back and in return he has theirs.

All well and good. Except when a president of a football club

If you want to get an understanding of how he operates check this clip out:

https://wwos.nine.com.au/afl/matthew-lloyd-fumes-over-mark-maclure-claims-reagarding-carlton-coaches/5eac0ec8-9933-4660-8a32-b2f909eab364

Despite the fact that Lloydd is beyond upset AND IS A COLLEAGUE of McGuire (on the show eddie hosts), McGuire all but dismisses his concerns.

He also tries to put the whole to thing to bed a couple of times by stating how great it is that McClure (who he calls a great bloke) has apologized. All nothing to see here, Sellar's a great bloke, let's move on

And he blurts out that he called McClure right before the show to check it out what happened. I'll bet he didn't check with lloyd before doing so (Lloyd said he called McClure immediately after the 360 aired). Then defends him by saying he got his wires crossed and it was Sam McClure who supposedly made the comments in question. Which actually makes it less defensible, not more (ie he attributed the comments to Lloyd and implied his brother leaked him information)!

And he tries to wrap it up by, predictably making it about Collingwood and the supposedly false rumors Buckley has lost the players. Classic Eddie deflection.

Tone deaf and utterly pathetic.

The clip end with a clearly seething Lloyd responding to Eddie's deflection with 'i know he's your mate eddie' but it is not on.

if i was Lloyd i would be just as angry with McGuire.

Surely the Pies can't let McGuire get back into the club via his mate, Brown. He is poison.

Disgraceful and it's only one example of what he's been doing for almost 30 years

Something’s not right with the world today. There’s something amiss. Oh, I know, I didn’t wake this morning to a new Collingwood scandal. ?

I guess we’ll just have relish in what we’ve already got. Drink it in, fellow Deeeez-ers.

It appears to me that most AFL clubs have only a passing illusion of democracy. The boards control who gets to stand at election time and anyone who wants to step outside their approval is in for a tough fight. It is always justified by  stability is the best method. As an individual member of an AFL club you have very little rights beyond attending a game.

As I advance in years OD I become increasingly of the view that democracy is not for everyone.

Imagine a football club truly run by members.. we could extend it to team selection.

My complaint about football clubs and the AFL is the lack of transparency. Why for example is each club's deal with the AFL over the use of Docklands confidential. Same for the MCG.

Well it seems I was wrong the other day only social club members have voting rights which according to the HUN today is approx 10 of the 80k members seems fairly democratic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes someone on BigFooty mentioned this a few months ago and I couldn't believe it! For the "blue collar" club they have become extremely exclusive.

Yes, I think they're trying this approach in Myanmar and a number of other countries.

Russia is a pretty keen advocate.

Even in the US, if you're not one of the elite forget a run for Prez...

    TRAINING: Monday 11th November 2024

Veteran Demonland Trackwatchers Kev Martin, Slartibartfast & Demon Wheels were on hand at Gosch's Paddock to kick off the official first training session for the 1st to 4th year players with a few elder statesmen in attendance as well. KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Beautiful morning. Joy all round, they look like they want to be there.  21 in the squad. Looks like the leadership group is TMac, Viney Chandler and Petty. They look like they have sli

2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. He showed great resilience in coming back from a nasty rib injury and is expected to continue in that role for another couple of seasons. 2024 Player Reviews: #4 Judd McVee

It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield. There could be more of that in 2025. The luckless Salem suffered a hamstring injury against the Lions early in the season and, after missing a number of games, he was never at his best. He was also inconvenienced by minor niggles later in the season. This was a blow for the club that sorely needed him to fill gaps in the midfield at times as well as to do his best work in defence.
