CASEY: Rd 03 vs North Melbourne

I only got to watch the first half after basketball training last night, but loved Bradtke's centre bounce (double) tap in the ruck to Tom Sparrow who put the ball down Weid's throat in the first for a goal (nice flat kick to Sam's advantage out of the guts). Great ruckwork craft from Bradtke, first I've really seen of him in anger and liked it.

Rosman's left foot snap across his body in the 2nd was also really classy. I liked how he's coming along as well.

I reckon Casey listed Ryan Sparkes has got a bit to offer too. As with most of the boys, backed up a good performance last week with another strong showing. 

Sad to see how far Dom Tyson has fallen. I loved him in his early days with us.

Was thinking about this overnight. You have to wonder how covid affected the various clubs and how the fully integrated clubs vs the aligned vs the standalones went about rebuilding their VFL lists. Was any support given to the players in 2020 as the AFL fled to its warm northern bubble.

Overall I think it was a dumb idea to restructure the comp this year. Perhaps in 2-3 years time but it's increasingly looking like the proverbial dogs breakfast.

It is really hard to get a read on form given how poor the North team were, with their extensive injury list obviously playing a part.

The one thing I think that is holding Weideman back at he moment is he tries to play from behind too much. If he does this at AFL level I can see the high quality defenders covering him easily if he does this.

I think this is the biggest area that Tmac currently has him covered in. Tmac really launches at the ball and takes it at its highest point, while Weid often tries to push his opponent under the ball rather than jumping at it.

I want Weid to be our long-term key forward, just worried that if Tmac keeps him out that he will walk.

All this talk about Sam Weidmann is perhaps overblown.  We are one injury away from needing him for immediate call up.  TMAc, Jackson, Brown or even Gawn go down and Sam is next most likely (Maybe Majak an outside chance if its Gawn).  It is a long season, Dogga is only in his second year, so I’m sure Sam’s time will come.

He also is being developed as a CHF type (to BBB full forward).  There is a spot in the team for him with the other talls if Jackson plays a slightly different role and TMac plays link-up HFF/Wing.  A forward setup of weids, BBB and Frittata with Kossie and ANB/Spargo would be a challenge if the ball is coming in properly.

I cannot see us wanting to let him go - if someone come calling, they are going to offer a fair bit for an AFL-ready forward.  Media will beat it up, but Sam is in a good place in a good team. Hope he kicks the door down by playing the ‘system’ so well we can’t leave him out.

Also, Given the team is 6-0, making one change to the forward structure at a time makes sense.  Sam might already be on a path to get back to the firsts, just one that suits the team rather than him.

This will be a 'saving grace' for the Weed. He must develop more enthusiastic ground skills and intercepts at the fall of the ball, however. There were several melees/scrambles for the ball against North in which the Weed just stood at the side looking in, waiting for some Casey player to knock the ball out to him, and this:

• prevented or leassend the likelihood of Weed being injured, and
• was rather lazy when his bulk could have assisted a clear, Casey possession deep in the forward line.

Still, his game was commendable in most regards yet his opponents were lamentable in nearly all regards.

no one is sugeesting he's surplus but you simply can't have the number of highly paid forwards that we have.

Tom Mac will either go at seasons end or his contract will be renegotiated. If Tmac has a stellar season we are in a perfect trade position.

His workrate as an old school KPF was great, but his work at ground level was ordinary. I wouldn't be selecting him on that performance, unless we have injuries.

Weidemann was very good and did all the team things.  He could have easily kicked 7 if he was more selfish.

He'll play - but let's see him play more and more footy consistently.  He is so clearly far too good for this level though.

It can't be good for his long term development to keep beating up on part time footballers.

If they all stay fit, one has to go. It's a really tough situation. 

They're all high-quality AFL players and all are in form.

Given that we have to choose one, I'd still be trading T-Mac at year's end. There would be a few teams regretting not taking him in the off-season.

That said, we still don't know how Ben Brown fits into the side, so there's a caveat on that call.

I think letting the Weed go is the one that would have the most potential to come back and bite us.

There's nothing stopping him from becoming a force and if we then have a recurrence of injuries from the older two, we start to look a bit silly.

Weidemann is a 5 year plus forward for us still building into his frame.  His forward craft running patterns, marking above head, team first etc i'm a very big fan.

I think we are flag contenders two years from now, and Sam is a large large part of that.

And for all these posters that think Weiderman should be in the side instead of TMac, try going to a game 

TMac deserves his spot & I’m so wrapt for him after not being wanted by the club he’s dug deep & completely turned his career around, shows fantastic character

Tmac brings a different and more combative game style which helps players our smalls in particular to be a real part of the forward line.
Also he marks mostly at the top if his arms outstretched ( BBB does also) and in congested packs. 
 

We need him also for accuracy ( Both Weid and BBB are accurate also I admit) but ho can also go to defence if needed.

My thoughts exactly WJ.

I understand the need for the AFL teams in the Northern States to have their 2's playing in a stronger competition, but why Victoria was slug with this responsibility alone makes no sense!

Surely the Queensland teams should have joined the SANFL (they share a border for a start) and the VFL take on the NSW teams. Would have allowed for more adequate and fair competition.

I don't think there's too many disagreeing with this. I love what TMac has done.

It's more around the future. Are we prepared to go into the next couple of years with two ageing key forwards and send Weideman to Collingwood (or elsewhere)?

It's very unlikely that the Weed stays without playing a significant number of games this year.

It's something that has to be dealt with. Sure, we might end up with an injury that masks the problem in the short term, but this not going to go away.

Ticketing seems to change each week. At Box Hill you could buy a ticket at the gate whereas against Richmond it was the full online ticketing system

It's not free on Kayo. You have to sign up to watch. Kayo's freebie content is a joke and it's very disappointing that the only way you can watch a non-Channel 7 game this year live is by signing up to Kayo or Fox Footy. No watching on 7'' screens this year via the AFL app.

I like the idea of integrating the Eastern States into one competition in principal rather than having NSW & Queensland with a couple of exceptional teams only and basically no decent competition as preparation for call-up to the Seniors. I agree that not having each team play each other once is an issue but no different to the AFL where there are 18 teams and you play 17 once and 5 twice. Any comp where you don't play each opponent twice, home & away, is going to be unequal Of course in the AFL they use that to try to equal up the competition.

I'm not sure that I agree with the comparisons between Tmac and Weid. On form obviously Tmac stays in the side but we've got to find a way to get Weideman into the side. He is the future of the club ahead of both Tom McDonald and Ben Brown...

I'm not sure about this. Not all forwards are the same and if they were, you'd have genuine problems.

I think the Weed does a good job if mixing up his lead up work with his stay at home stuff and I can see fitting in perfectly with either Brown or TMac who, as you say, lead up and take the ball at its highest point.

What would be ironic if Weed leaves year's end , he goes to Norf and we get a number one draft pick who happens to be an injury free Rowell or another Petracca. On top of it the Weed ends up like Tyson. ( TYson who you may say ).
