I read yesterday that if an AFL club picks up a player in the mid season draft, they need to fund the club the player was drafted from 10k. Pretty much as a compensation. 

Whether the club is willing to give up 10k let alone 20k just for two players is another discussion, especially with clubs already still recovering financially from last year's covid situation.

would be madness if we dont select a player for the immediate future rather than a long term prospect. Get Stengle, get Freeman.. they can play..  we managed to control teh HB project, he let us down but it was clear we as a club were able to handle, wouldn't have years ago..

Why do the Dees only have two picks when we have 3 players ( Nietschke,Hore,Tomlinson) out for season?

Schloithe was included in Knighmare’s recent top ten draft rankings:-

“Averaging 32 disposals and kicking 11 goals from his five WAFL games so far, Schloithe is arguably the premier state-leaguer and is the ultimate choice for any club looking to instantly improve their midfield and front half. Schloithe has been a dominant player so far this season and has been a star for several years, previously winning the Sandover Medal ahead of then teammate Tim Kelly who went on to get drafted the same year. There are 'accumulators' in the state leagues (who might not damage teams with their touches), and then there is Schloithe, who has good speed and is a classy and damaging ball user who finishes around goal and hits damaging targets. With Schloithe's capacity to hurt rival teams through the midfield and close to goal, he is good enough to slot straight into any club's best 22. The component that will have some clubs pausing is his age with Schloithe turning 28 in June which may see his chances limited to clubs with shorter time horizons.”

Absolutely agree with this. The club is mature enough now to bring in these two with past history (attitude/injury) and get the best out of them. Cost bugger all and could be vital come finals time.

I assume there is no compensation if the player is coming out of the U19 competition?

I don't think the money will come into it if we think the player is worth going for.

Gotta be a ready-to-go selection, but I’d favour someone who will chase and harass, contribute to our team defense & ethos, rather than any player with the seductive traits of “classy” or “damaging.”

No point getting to this stage of our “window” and then loading up on projects. We need break-in-case-of-emergency types to prop up our depth.

The time to make our run is now.

If crisis struck and we lost 2 talls we would need to shuffle existing resources.

Yep, I would be very surprised if we don't have a back up plan for our zonal defence if another goes down. Given we've got every guy on the list training for two roles, I'd say we'll also have contingencies we can go to if necessary with injuries. It most likely won't be as strong as our current set up, but with the exception of the 2016 Bulldogs, to win a flag, you usually need everything going right for you.

When it comes to an experienced player I think they have to be in our top 28 or so and therefore likely to push for games to be worth considering. That means someone with really good state league form.

When it comes to a young player the aim should be to get a jump on the draft and grab someone we'd be happy to have instead of a late 3rd round pick. Which in general means that Jason Taylor probably has to like them fairly strongly on his draft board. I believe that was the case for Dunkley.

I'd be a bit surprised if there's no one who fits in either of those categories, but whether it's 0, 1 or 2 and what they prioritise I guess we'll find out tomorrow night.

You're probably right but I suspect we're still in a bit of strife if the Browns or Majak (to a lesser extent) are playing back.

yep so it's 50k contract, if it's a 6month contract and they are delisted thats another 20k to the player and regardless of terms its 10k to the state league side only that they come from. the money is all from outside the salary cap tho as the player joins as a Cat A rookie

is interesting that the club doesn't feel the need to take 3 picks. i guess although we have 3 LTI we have decent depth atm and would rather play guys we have already as the year progresses. gotta admit i like the idea of stengle who kicks bags at state level and has proven he can do it afl level too as a position of need and riley knight averaged over 20 touches in that successful crows side of 2017 and the wing is also a weaker point of ours in terms of next-in insurance. i guess he's a good role player but when the high end talent started to depart the crows he struggled to find the football

Any ready-to-go player will be a role player not a pea.  Even Marlion Pickett, the most successful MSD, is a role player, notwithstanding his GF heroics - I could have got a kick against GWS that day.

@Cheesy D. Pun - I think we've got cover for injuries to 2 KPs - of course we'll be weakened and it depends who they are how much that would be - any two of May, Lever and TMac is going to really hurt.  But the point is there's just not going to be greater ready-to-go talent out there than Majak and M.Brown.  Just to be clear - I wouldn't play either Brown back - TMac and Majak would be first choices to move there and we'd plug the forward gap.

Cal Twomey has us linked to Kye Declase and very own Albury lad here in Daniel Turner who is a 191cm tall defender.

I don't rate him, but if May or Lever went down, I'd be looking at Joel Smith for back there too.

It’s also a financial decision of at least $80k a pick and that is just base salary and state league compensation. I would spend it to get an extra half back and whatever talent we would like to bring in - but the finances are not nothing.

Kye Declase looks good in his highlights package on YouTube. I also rate Joel smith if given the opportunity. Especially with our lockdown style of footy that we're playing his speed would be very handy.
