Do the Tasmanians get any say in what their team might be called? Or do they have to live with the parochial assumptions of mainlanders? Or, maybe they want to continue the latest trend of naming new AFL clubs after American "franchises". We could have the Tassie Jazz, or the Tassie Dodgers. Quote

whatwhat say what 23,863 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 i've always been an advocate to reduce the competition to 14 teams (goodbye northern franchises, saints, north) or 12 and everyone plays each other home and away in a 26- or 22-round season it won't happen tho the fact that ed is promoting a 20 team competition is in keeping with the whispers out of docklands for the last five or six years that the afl is more focussed on expansion than contraction as others have said, his entire statement is high on popular statements and low on realistic outcomes - all about 'rehabilitation of ed' than anything else Quote

The heart beats true 18,201 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 I’m confused. Ed left out the plan for systemic racism in the new club, but maybe that’ll be in the next blueprint? T’was a proud day. 1 Quote
Grr-owl 1,258 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Well, for what it's worth, I kinda like the idea. Eddie's energy and ideas, diligence, and maths for that matter, are optimistic and bold. But that's the kind of thinking that makes Western societies dynamic. Only thing is I reckon the talent is already spread thin. A country of 25 million, 2/3 of which play the game, can only produce so many elite athletes. One relocation and one closure would do it, or two relocations and a combine. Sure, either of these options are gonna hurt, but they've been done twice and we got used to it, especially once those teams experienced success... Teams have come and gone. Anybody still mourning University? Happens all the time with relegation in the EPL, recognising that fortunes wax and wane with talent and energy and ideas and application. Quote
Wells 11 5,503 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 I’m all for a more evenly fixtured comp and the 20 team idea would give us just that. The current biased draw sets up all kinds of inequities that I hate! i grew up with 12 teams and 22 rounds , one home one away vs all teams. I still miss the sense of justice in that. Top 12 is daft. Just go for a top 10. Don’t think teams below half way on the ladder should be included in finals. Tassie deserve a gig. not sure where the other team come from. maybe a third from WA or SA? Anyway I seem to be one of the few that likes this whole idea in general. 1 Quote

Rab D Nesbitt 8,956 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 18 teams, 34 games home and away. Whoever finishes on top wins the league and are crowned premiers. No finals and no bye. 7 games are played midweek and the grand final takes place on a Saturday afternoon on the last Saturday in September. Alternatively 20 teams, 38 games and no mickey mouse pre-season competition. Quote

It would finally be an even competition with no major advantages to clubs like Collingwood(home games) & Geelong. There is a lot of luck involved currently as you happen to play twice on any given year. Some of these teams are so much more likely to play finals due to these advantages. Even a top 12 is not too bad if out of 20 teams. Could be as simple as 11th and 12th are effectively wildcards. It would stop a lot of teams from tanking as more would be in contention for these spots. Overall i hope the competition goes down a similar path to this hypothetical one that is outlined. It would create a more exciting and fair competition....Something we have never had even close to! You may have missed it but the proposal is not fair and even, it has an extra 'rivalry round' for some reason. so whether that team is 1st or 20th could decide your season. They finally have the chance to have an even and fair draw at least hypothetically and they blow it. And the 12th team out of 20 making finals? finals should be the best team playing off. not team that have lost more games than they won. I get he wants to make more money for the AFL with more finals but finals would lose their appeal and significance Quote

DubDee 26,676 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 What about all 20 teams make the finals? the AFL would make so much money then or maybe just 18 teams so north and the bombers can miss out Quote
daisycutter 30,021 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 how about for fairness and inclusion we calculate the ladder positions differently we add an extra column call the the"joan kirner woke inclusion factor" which is the number of premierships won, then the game points are divided by this factor to determine the ladder position simples, guaranteed to even out the competition Quote
george_on_the_outer 7,875 Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Just what we need....another 2 teams who can't support themselves. $30M p.a. going to GWS, similar to GCS, with St.Kilda and North being held up by the AFL as well. With more teams on welfare, it just means less to be returned to grass roots levels, and the teams which are currently providing the income of the AFL. 1 Quote
