Sure not their bes, but I think Sydney have been supreme.

Yes they've been excellent, but Richmond have undoubtedly made it worse.

Plus: Wicks & Bell

Ah thanks.

Bell's the sub but yes, that's 6 of the 22 and the sub is the 7th.

Naismith's injured but he's also Academy.

This is truly pathetic from Richmond.

It's likely just a one off but the amount of lazy jogging, half-assed tackle attempts, ill-discipline and breakdown of structures is just baffling for a side with this much talent and only one or two players missing.

All great teams come to an end. Let's hope this is the beginning of the end for a team that's had more hangers-on than any team in history.

Hopefully this game punctures the aura of invincibility around Richmond. They've been a champion team and i wouldn't bet them against yet this year but they look like a spent force today.

Always had a soft spot for tgr tiges. Long term co tennants and a big gap btw flags.

Now they have dominated its funny how ive soured?

I think today is more evidence of the changed way teams have to defend in 2021.

Richmond's key defenders have traditionally had layers of mids/forwards rolling back to support them. They haven't had that today and have repeatedly been beaten as a result.

McCartin at the other end, by contrast, has been pretty solid (Lynch has kicked 3 but I've liked McCartin's game).

We know May and Lever (and Tomlinson) have been pretty good so far this year and our defensive set up has held up even against St Kilda's attempts to move the ball with pace. Hopefully our set up is able to be maintained, as I think some sides are going to find it hard to defend against sides with reasonable offensive abilities.

How many Sydney players playing are from their academy?

On their list, by draft year with place taken in brackets:

2020 - Campbell (5), Gulden (32)

2018 - Blakey (10)

2015 - Mills (3)

2014 - Heeney (18 - different bidding rules, was bid for at 2 - by us!).  Also Hiscox and Foote with late selections.

In effect, they've had three additional top-5 selections courtesy of the academy, as well as pick 10 and 32.

I guess to consider the impact that has on a club you can just imagine what it would do for the fortunes of a club on the mid ladder range to add pick 2, 3, 5, 10, and 32 to a single draft.  Yes, they gave up selections to get them but it is nothing in the same field.

I wonder if any other club has had more selections inside the top 5 in that time?

Swans laying down that they are genuine finals contenders. Big win away and no Franklin.

Impressive swans.

Port will will make Richmond look much worse than that if they serve that up again next week. I hope.

only thing annoying about he game is I changed my tip from swans to tigers this morning as the odds blew out and I thought there was some bad news from the swans going into the game.

The academy for NSW is a massive advantage, that has not been replicated by other clubs as it also includes the border towns on the nSW side where AFL is native and home to a history of champions.

I don't think this is correct...

The Giants not Sydney had those areas.

They were taken away from them (GWS) in 2017.

Sydney were clearly tanking, St Kilda weren’t that good, Geelong benefited from the shorter quarters thanks to their geriatric list, Brisbane didn’t have to travel and we did have to travel lots and were cooked having to play in Cairns twice.

That is a great win by Sydney.

Now onto the saints and make the bummers day more miserable.

Essendon will finish bottom 6 even if they win today.  Saints are fighting with us for a finals spot.

Rather the the Bombers win this one

Saints put way better pressure than this on us early. Without it they are nothing.

  6. Carlton - 3
  7. St Kilda - 2

It's far too early to draw any of those conclusions except maybe the Sydney one. I don't think they were tanking though, they had significant injuries last year.

Meanwhile the advantage rule is broken IMO. So many umpires wait to see if the team who takes advantage retains possession and if they don't, they recall it. That's not how the rule works. If you take it, and immediately turn it over, bad luck.

Case in point just now: Sydney had a free, player picked it up and kicked it, turned it over, so the umpire called it back and that gave Sydney a new possession and a goal.

Hope they keep it up, preferably not blow whistle, wait 20 seconds, see what happens then with blow whistle for free or play on

  • PREVIEW: Sydney

The two teams competing at the MCG on Sunday afternoon have each traversed a long and arduous path since their previous encounter on a sweltering March evening in Sydney a season and a half ago. Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

  • REPORT: Brisbane

“Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

  • CASEY: Southport

The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.

Just a game and percentage outside the Top 8, the Demons return to Melbourne to face the Sydney Swans at the MCG, with a golden opportunity to build on the momentum from toppling the reigning premiers on their own turf. Who comes in, and who makes way?
