maybe i'm missing something here, but why is a QR code scan required for entry to afl games in victoria?

surely, because all entry must be booked beforehand on ticketek/ticketmaster with fixed reserved seats, then all the info required for contract tracing is already recorded

sure, some people could scalp their tickets to unknown people, but likewise many people won't scan (or just pretend) a qr code

    Would assume it's because it makes the tracing easier when it's done through the govt app as opposed to having to chase up TicketMaster (who are terrible at everything) if needed.

    The same people complaining about 'Dictator Dan's' contact tracing are probably the ones complaining about this as well.

    Because we're accepting international travelers in a few weeks and the virus will no doubt be imported back into the community given this state's track record.

    I guess it depends on how vigilant the authorities at the gate are in terms of checking whether you've checked in and checked in "honestly".

    Cafes and restaurants were super-vigilant when they all reopened but now I can barely remember the last time anyone checked. Sure the signs and reminders are there and for the most part I comply but I've noticed that many establishments are more relaxed about it now.

    I would assume that in the first few weeks at the footy you'll be watched like a hawk and then in a few week who knows. That said my 6 year old was treated like a member of the ISIS by security when entering the G on the weekend.

    I honestly don’t understand what’s so difficult about scanning a QR code?

    I do it everywhere and It takes sub 10 seconds to do so.

    You have to get a ticket through tickitek and your name is registered. Why the qr codes ? Overkill as far as I am concerned.

    When I first heard about the QR codes at the footy from this week on I thought the same thing but I guess there are other factors being Ticketek is a 3rd party to the venue and it's probably the venue that is responsible for who goes through their gates.

    Then there are the cases of people that buy tickets but don't attend (I guess that issue can be solved by only contacting people that had barcodes that were actually scanned). And then there is the issue of on-selling or giving your ticket to someone else. Sure the contact traces might contact you and then you tell them to contact Joe Blow who actually attended but then that's already double contact tracing not to mention relying on Ticketek in the first place.

    The QR code scanned at any event entry is usually specific to it's location and is time stamped and submitted directly to the DHHS.

    Get quite tired of people raving about Dictator Dan. I would hate to have seen how Victoria would have fared under the alternative bunch of corrupt and inept yokels.

    Like many things this seems simple enough but if there were a person with Covid that attended the footy the authorities have to contact and interview everyone that may have had contact with the individual which could be hundreds of people, and then of those hundreds of people contact their close contacts, which is on average around 20 close contacts per person, so thousands of people within a very short timeframe. Given the speed required it is understandable that the State Government want this data in a form that directly interfaces with their contact tracing platform without having to rely on a third party and then interview people to see if they onsold tickets and if the people they sold them to attended.

    People have amnesia about how quickly this virus preys on the vulnerable. It's as though they are demanding their 'freedom' to indulge without even contemplating the possible consequences. I also have about as much sympathy for the impact it's had on 'Business' as I have for surfers who complain they can't swim because ten sharks have been spotted on the beaches they surf. It's as though 'Business' is the new religion of our way of life. It ain't baby, viruses like this spare nothing and nobody...

    i can't believe the qr scanning will be adequately checked by officials coz it would take too many people and time.

    there is also a minority of people who will wilfully not do it or say they had. I heard a few on the radio today

    anyway......it will be interesting to see if the # of qr scans harvested by dhss match the afl attendance figures, but i suspect these qr figures will not be publicised

    They definitely had them up around the G last week including at the gates but I didn't notice anyone scanning them.

    I don't know why people complain about it, if you don't want to do it don't do it. Noone is going to be forcing you to scan it, it would be impossible to police with so many people going through and so many different places to scan. You won't have to scan it as you walk in they will have them spread around the ground so will be easy enough to avoid.

    If you're someone who decides to not scan QR codes when you go somewhere then please don't ever complain about the contact tracing system in Victoria ever again.

The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos.     • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
