If our boys can play as well as these guys can sing then we will be OK.

ALEX DOCHERTY  at The Mongrel Punt

Jake Bowey – Midfielder, 174cm, 67kg

As someone who has played at the same junior local club, I have to say I’ve grown a bit of a liking to little Jake Bowey. But when it comes down to crunch time, this kid has got moves. There’s not a lot of him in a body sense, but when called upon, he attacks the contest at speed. He’s also a very handy player on the outside, with some saying he’s the most talented to come out of the Sandy Dragons footy factory and that’s saying something with the talent they’ve produced in recent years.

As one of the smaller players from this year’s draft class, he brings great pace which could see him start his AFL career more as a small forward. He did manage to snag two bags of three in the NAB league in 2019. He also averaged over three tackles per game for the Dragons last year, playing both as a forward and in roles higher up the ground, so he can be very dangerous player that adds class when he needs to be.

As much as I like the nickname 'Ziggy', it must be remembered that Bowey rhymes with Yowie, not with Bowie.

Older posters may remember his father Brett running around for St Kilda.

So ziggy would be a bit of a long bowey?

Every time people worry about size, I remind myself that of the 4 players who have played 400+ games, two of them were genuine smalls in Kevin Bartlett and Boomer Harvey. If you're good enough, size doesn't matter.

I agree I believe Greg Williams is one is the best players I've seen live, not that quick, could barely kick 40 was small but he was a Super player. And just quietly got a Brownlow ripped off a him. Me and my Carlton mate was at the game at Princess Park where we got our pants pulled down he crushed us and for no Brownlow Votes. He might a got one, can't remember, but that match cost him. Size is handy but great players come in all shapes and sizes. Hopefully our lads can produce something similar.

Might’ve struggled to kick it over 40, but he could handball it just about that far (and off both hands too). Tough.

That day he was on his knees in the mud, left and right handballing to teammates that had no right to get the ball. Tough..Yep gave as much as he got and hated the umpires as much as I do. I hope our small brigade becomes more influential. Along with Big Ben if he can stay fit,  that's where our extra improvement will come from.

Please, please, please be able to kick

In the highlight reel his kicking, albeit under junior pressure, was one of the standouts.

Take your word for it, but Charles seemed much taller than 175

i thought the same but it was on foxsports replay of an old game where his height came up on the screen.

According to The Encyclopedia of AFL Footballers and other sources, Charles was in in fact 182cm tall, or just a tad under six foot in the old money.  That is more in keeping of how I remember him rather than him being a mere 175cm.

That is more like it I was going to query that 175cm post but didn't have any facts only memory to counter it!

Interesting that JT mentioned Bowey will play back.

Sean Charles, another 175cm player.

What a pity his legs were as good as Tingays after Stinger went through the plate glass window. Loved both of them. One favorite memory of Sean was he went up in a contest with Wayne Carey, grabbed his arm while competing and sent him off from popping his shoulder. Can't remember if we won that night or not. Someone will remember I'm sure. I also think Carey got hit with the ball as he was being stretchered around the boundary line.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
