Players Traded Out:  Hannan, Preuss

Players Traded In:  Brown

Draft picks:

2020:  '@ Start:  23, 47, 62, 63, 89

            '@ End:   18, 19, 28, 50, 89

2021:  '@ Start:  1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

'@ End:  2nd (Tied to Brisbane), 3rd (Tied to WBD), 4th (Tied to North).  I wouldn't be surprised to see the WBD slide and North to not improve much so these two picks might be an upgrade on what would have been our 'natural' 2021 picks.

Overall Position:

  • Covered a tall fwd need.
  • Improved list by trading two 'depth' players
  • Dramatically improved 2020 draft position.
  • Only gave up 2021 1st rnd pick.  Upgraded later 2021 picks

I would rate that A++.

Its good to be on the plus side of the ledger on individual trades and pick swaps.  Shows that having a reputation for getting deals done pays off.

Getting in early for Lions pick 18 and 19 stops other teams doing same altho GWS have a fistful of 1st round picks:  10, 13, 15, 20.  And Ess have:  6, 7, 8.  So plenty of scope for more deals to be done.

I'm guessing we will take only 1 or 2 picks to the draft so more pick swaps to come.  Would be surprised if we don't use pick #89 to upgrade Lockhart to the seniors list.  Wouldn't mind swapping picks 28 and 50 for more future picks.  Collingwood's 2021 1st perhaps?

I think this means Tomlinson will play wing next year and Tom McDonald (despite what I think should happen) will play back.

I reckon we must be close to the cap once we offer Oliver and Petracca new deals, otherwise I would have thought Treloar for $600k a year would have been a no brainer for our midfield.

If we go Merrett next year, there's no way we'd get him cheaper than $600k a year.

I suspect we've got our eye on a player in the top 10 and will trade up on the night.

So I reckon we might package 19 & 28 and offer them to Freo for Picks 12 & a future 3rd rounder maybe? Pick 12 might be high enough for us to get MacRae.

I have to agree that we did very well this trade period. I think we managed to do almost all that we wanted to do except for moving a couple of players on.

I do not mind that we have still got TMac on the list. he cannot be a bad as he was last season and he can serve as back up forward and in the ruck.

Expect us to upgrade Lockhart, take a DFA and Look to trade further up the draft.

My big take away from this trade period is that clubs need to invest much more in list management and contract structures or face a Pies future.

I like the way Josh did his work.

Re:  Oscar, I believe Mahoney said he will be on the list in some capacity in 2021.

Happy with the outcomes from this period.  Hannan and Preuss were surplus to requirements, we added Brown to our forward line and did very well in trading our picks, leaving us with those two first rounders that we can do something with closer to the draft.

A little more pace on the opposite wing would have been handy but we'll see how we go in house over the summer.

I think we're well placed through this to get back into the finals race in 2021.

Give it an A. So great work. Brown will be a terrific addition, compared to what Geelong paid for Cameron, almost makes it deal of the trade!

Had we have picked up one of Philips or Higgins would have gone to A+.

Personally I hope we retain Oscar in some way. He is very good cover in defence and I think would be better as cover than the other big mac.

Its an A for me, It would be hard to argue a better trade for expected output and need vs trade  and contract cost than Brown. Once again trading into the first round is a Mahoney special. Particularly in a draft with a lot of unknowns at worst having three throws at the board in the top 30 is a great outcome and room to move up on the night if teams need to pivot. It’s a shame we could not move out TMac or ANB/AVB to clear some room as would have been interesting to see if we would have got more involved in the Piefire sale. You cant trade though if there’s no takers.

probably and hopefully a good sign to those in charge that you're not going to progress too far up the ladder whilst u have players not a single other club is interested in on ur list, less so tmac obviously due to his coin but there'll be suitors for him this time next year

Great summary LH

MFC are so good at trade period and draft these days. And we treat our players and other clubs with respect. Haven’t put our cap under undue pressure so have capacity for Trac and Clarry deals in the future.

stable and steadily building. Go Dees

I thought he said that he was going to come back for pre-season, work hard and look to get back into our best 22?

Perhaps that might have been Tom he was talking about?

Thats hilarious. Shame we couldn't get a piece of the fire sale action though. Guess that hinged on TMac finding a new club

I'm worried about our other wing and our lack of small forwards. I hope we can sort this during the draft.

He did, but he also said, now that they know list sizes, they'll have further discussions.

Could be a rookie for depth. Might also find a spot somewhere else as a DFA

Could this have been our last trade period with Mahoney?

Or was that rumour re him moving on just like all the others that have been thrown around in recent weeks?

What are people's thoughts on trading out our 2021 1st round? Given that seemed to be most people's no-go zone.

I have no opinion other than: We just await potential further pick swaps, new players form over 1-3 years and our collective form to judge it in its entirety.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
