I think we should do that also mate. With the lack of tall forwards in the top 30 prospects, I think Van Rooyen and Jack Williams might go closer to 15 to 20 range rather than in the 20 to 30 range like most mock drafts have them at. 

I would think our best bet is to try to offer more draft points than any other team to get the doggies pick 17, which will turn into 19. 

I think a KPF is a must with our 1st pick, due to the obvious, of the majority of elite key forwards are top 10 or 20 picks. This is the only position that we haven’t got elite young talent. This is considering Jackson as a Ruck to take over Gawn’s reins in a few years.

Don’t mind Van Rooyen on the little ive seen of him. Others would have a better idea than me, but if he was available at our pick, I’d be happy to bring him to the Dees.

The thing is that over the past few weeks JVR has risen up most rankings and there’s a strong chance that he’ll be well out of our reach even if we’re able to trade up to the mid teens.

Chris Doerre’s October Power Rankings (note: this is not a phantom draft).

Highlights:

• Jason Horne-Francis overtakes Nick Daicos but it’s obviously going to be a neck and neck battle for the number one spot in the draft;

• Mac Andrew has dropped to number 10 but Doerre still ranks his projected draft range at between 2 and 10; 

• Andrew isn’t even the leading South Sudanese member of Doerre’s top ten. That honour goes to SA’s former Adelaide NGA, Leek Alleer from Central Districts who is number 9;

• Mitch Owens (St Kilda NGA) has come into the top 20 from out of blue into number 11, although he hasn’t played for a couple of months.

The AFL Draft Central Power rankings for the month came out today as well.

They have Mac Andrew at number 7 which could see him going to the Tigers. Somehow, I can’t see him going there but it’s a funny draft.

The thing that stands out to me after watching vision of a good proportion of those in contention for the draft is the evenness of this year’s pool of players. One observer remarked that you could virtually throw a blanket over a group of around 40 players who could get drafted anywhere between 10 and 50 and take your pick. In that regard, it’s not such a disadvantage for Melbourne to have one pick in the second round and two in the third.

Not sure really, putting it down to the talk for the last few years leading into this draft, that it was very much a midfielders draft, there’s a lot of risk with the KPT from WA, I don’t see a McDonald or a Grainger Barrass in the WA crop this year, but there’s still some potential high rewards for taking risks.

With Jye Amiss, he is very raw and only came up from the country this year, so doesn’t have a lot of exposed form up until this season. Did he kick bags because he’s bigger than his opponent and how will he go against stronger opponents at the next level, he’s high risk, but he does convert.

I really like Van Rooyen, he’s played a lot of school footy this year and started the season really well at Colts level, but once PSA started he dropped off the experts radar a bit, but don’t think that would have impacted recruiters thoughts on him. He’s not super tall but that adds IMO to his tools as he can play forward, back and be given short stints on the ball. I reckon whoever drafts him will develop him as a defender first

Bazzo good lock down key defender who just does his job, Dylan Grimes type no X factor but reliable and whilst not high up the boards someone’s getting a 200 game player.

Cripps and Sprigg are the 2 ruckman who are late developers, which is why they are not high on the boards,  Cripps had an injury riddled 2020 and Sprigg really shot up late 2020

Arthur Jones is in play. Eagles have not assigned him under NGA rules. Great news.
Certainly impressed in WA v Allies u19s game. Good pace and skill for young wingman.  Definitely on the radar.

I watched Arthur play PSA this season very exciting footballer with great acceleration. His parents are nice people and really supportive of him, and IMO they have produced a very rounded young man.

He’s a fantastic kid, who is a leader at Wesley College and a mentor to the indigenous boys at the school. They run a fantastic programme at the school for the indigenous boys.

Comes from Mt Barker (Jimmy and Phil Krakouer’s hometown) and will be a good get for some club as he’s got a lot to give a club not just infield

Would that make him the only ‘Arthur’ currently in the league?

Van Rooyen is the interesting one and not just because he has a Zimbabwean background! I think we need to go tall with our first pick and he seems to be versatile, great leap and covers the ground well.

There's plenty of scope to improve by the looks. In a draft that seems not to have an abundance of tall prospects Van Rooyen seems to be one of the best.

I agree - surely he's one that would be on our radar.  I reckon  Jye Amiss could also be in contention.  He's come from the clouds this year as a late bloomer but dominated WAFL Colts comp kicking 50+ goals.  Given Jason Taylor spent some time in WA, could he be the one on our radar?

Was also wondering if Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera could be another in contention - would add to the outside polish / class that (prior to this year) seemed to be our biggest weakness.  We could become the Kysaiah / Nasiah show!

I’d love Wanganeen-Milera, but he’s bolting. Can’t see him getting past Essendon at 11, could go inside 10. Would be a great fit at Saints with pick 9.

If we go for a mid I hope Josh Ward slides to us. Was super impressive in the games he played earlier in the season that I saw. Zac Taylor is one that has good raps on him for his kicking and I believe he has good pace.

Half back could see Wilmot or maybe Sinn?

Outside mids could have a look at Chesser or Wanganeen-Milera.

Or my preference would be to have a developing key position player.

Jye Amiss, Jacob van Rooyen and Jack Williams are all WA talls that performed well throughout the year. I'll have to do a bit more research into them but think we could do with a developing tall after Brown and McDonald closing in on 30 and a yet unproven Weideman.

Seems an open sort of draft after the first handful of picks which makes things interesting and hard to predict.

Looks as if some of the “big” fish will be missing from the game. From SA, Jason Horne-Francis and Arlo Draper are two highly regarded prospects with the latter injured when the teams met on grand final day. From WA, Jye Amiss (also injured in the last game), Neil Erasmus, Jacob Van Rooyen and Matthew Johnson aren’t there. Taj Woewodin picked on the ball is promising.
