Fabian Francis played one game for Melbourne. I think that might be a touch short of what’s needed to qualify even if he was the biological father.

Most games with Port Adelaide - 86 - so falls short of being a chance for consecutive years of a super talent being called out and 'claimed' by a top tier team.

    Is Mac Andrew a top 20 pick if not good? What's happened to Taj Woewodin?

    The fact that Andrew has made the squad of 24 suggests that he’s getting close to top 20 selection so it’s up to him to keep improving to force his way into contention. 

    Taj Woewodin is playing in the WAFL Colts competition (although probably not this weekend thanks to Covid19) so he’s a bit more under the radar compared to the elite group in the team for today’s game.

    Taj was meant to play Rd 1 today of the PSA competition for Aquinas  vs Trinity, but all games are off this weekend

    I only caught the last couple minutes of the live stream of the afl academy kids vs Geelong reserves. Academy kids got smashed 19 to 149. Nothing of interest happened late in the game but the commentators mentioned Mac Andrew played well in the last quarter.

    One of the steepest risers in this year’s crop, the Melbourne Next Generation Academy (NGA) prospect proved his true first round potential. He played up either end and gained a good tick for his versatility, but well and truly came to life in the final term with an awesome showing in the ruck – despite the result being well beyond his side at that point. Andrew caught the eye with phenomenal vertical leaps at each centre bounce, with his first act of the final term a follow-up clearance. He highlighted his marking ability with a nice clunk in front, and showed off some finesse in the ruck with a wonderfully directed hit to the anchoring Jason Horne. Having started forward, the Dandenong Stingrays talent snared the first score of the game with a snap, before displaying clean hands on the move and flying well in his less fruitful move to defence. Demons recruiters will now be sweating on his potential after a string of terrific performances, if they were not already.

    There seems to be an element of exaggeration going on here. The Academy side was flogged to the tune of 20 goals and only scored 2 goals themselves. Remember 2 years ago, an Academy team that included a bevy of real stars including Rowell, Anderson etc. beat Casey. According to Herald Sun’s coverage on it’s subscriber only site, Andrew had 9 disposals, three marks, five hit outs and three clearances. Slim pickings from a supposedly top draft pick.

    im so [censored] off with the whole system. The bulldogs get the number 1 draft pick Ugle-Hagan and the moment we are onto a player who would fill a list need for us, we won't get him. arghh. do some under the table deals Jason Taylor!

    He includes Mac Andrew on his bench so there’s a chance, in his view at least, that the Demons’ NGA prospect might go top 20 in the national draft and be stolen from our grasp.

    In a similar vein, an article by Chris Cavanagh in today’s Herald Sun (Young Guns Firing On All Cylinders - no link available) also ranks Mac Andrew highly. The article lists the author’s top ten NAB League future stars:-

    • Nick Daicos (Oakleigh Chargers)  - a ball-winning midfielder who can float forward and hit the scoreboard;

    • Sam Darcy (Oakleigh Chargers)  - son of ex-Western Bulldogs captain Luke Darcy who is a versatile tall who can play both as a key forward and in the ruck;

    • Tyler Sonsie (Eastern Ranges) - a smooth mover with excellent foot skills;

    • Josh Sinn (Sandringham Dragons) - classy and versatile, has a damaging left-foot boot, good speed and an impressive ability to read the play;

    • Josh Rachele (Murray Bushrangers) - former elite soccer player who is an explosive X-factor player who has been likened to Giants star Toby Greene;

    • Campbell Chesser (Sandringham Dragons) - an athletic rebounding defender or wingman who has a good mix of speed and endurance;

    • Mac Andrew (Dandenong Stingrays) -

    “A Melbourne Next Generation Academy member, Andrew has emerged “out of nowhere” to sit as a likely top-20 draft pick this year. Standing 200cm tall, he covers the ground effortlessly, has a nice kick, possesses a giant jump, and becomes an extra midfielder once the ball hits the ground out of the ruck contest. His favoured position is in the ruck.”

    Josh Gibcus (Greater Western Vic Rebels) - a 195cm key defender with a big leap and is considered an elite intercept mark.

    Finn Callaghan (Sandringham Dragons) - a rebounding defender or wingman, Callaghan can also be deployed across half-forward and has emerged as a top draft prospect this year.

    Cody Raak (Western Jets) - a mid-sized defender previously tied through the NGA system to the Western Bulldogs but overlooked in last year’s draft. He might be taken in this year’s MSD. 

    The list includes only NAB Boys League players

    The Dragons fielded a depleted side in their game against Jets with Chesser, Sinn and some of their ruck power missing to go down for the first time in 2021. 

    And in case anyone’s interested, these are the results of the Stingrays game, Mac Andrew kicked a goal but didn’t feature in the best against the Suns Academy.

    I watched Aquila’s vs Wesley college in PSA Saturday expecting to get a look at Taj Woewodin, but he was playing colts for East Freo where he was named amongst the best players.

    Chad Warner’s brother was absolutely dominant player on the ground for Aquinas. Ball use was exceptional, decision making was very good and ability to move through traffic also very good. Wesleys ruckman Riley Sprigg was the best big man on the ground could be a late pick although another with the choice between cricket and footy.

    Nice soft hands for a ruckman and disposal is good for a big man. I think would develop well under AFL standard conditioning coach

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

    • PREVIEW: West Coast

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

    • NON-MFC: Round 08

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
