Mac Andrew's seems to be a consensus top 10 pick for many other mock drafts too, for what it's worth.

Mac Andrew is now sitting at # 7 in Chris Doerre’s power rankings for August. I’m told that another of the draft experts on bigfooty, Ed Pascoe, will have him as high as 6th when he drops his rankings.

Can you show me where I’ve advocated that he should come to us? My position is that he is being overhyped in some quarters based on the amount of games he’s played this season and on what he’s achieved. That’s not his fault because we’ve gone through two lockdowns and he also missed a few weeks through concussion. I doubt whether any draft prospect who has reached top 10 in these sorts of draft discussions has done so little to get there. At this stage I don’t think he’s shown enough to warrant such high ranking.

If he was rated by our recruiting team as top 6 in draft, then yes.

The draft watchers increasingly have him in the top 10 or thereabouts, which seems to be a reasonable indication, despite the factors you mention.

Would be great for him to be an option at our first pick, but I won't be surprised when he isn't.

Even if he was the 6th best kid, clubs are going to have their own needs/rankings as well.  Might be there are teams who need more ready to go talent, more midfield support, more outside run, more footy smarts (what we went after last year).  Where Mac ends up will depend on many factors, and I think only the pre-draft phantoms (when the clubs are leaking their preferences) will tell us much.  The ones you can take to the bank are guys like Daicos, who wont make it out of the top 3. Andrew could be a square peg in a round hole - even for the demons.

Let’s assume that we’re back in late 2018 and Melbourne has draft pick 6 (which it had for a little while). Your choice is to take Steven May and change in return for that pick and change or use it on a promising but slightly built young ruckman who has played half a dozen NAB Cup games and two other trial games without starring in them. He’s promising but you won’t know for a few years whether he can really play at the highest level. What would you do with pick 6?

If he's eligible this year, he would be easier to draft. If he's draft eligible next year we would struggle to get him because we could not match a bid up to number 40.

Actually, it was exactly the questioned asked.

If we had pick 6 in this draft would we use it on Mac Andrew? If our team thought he was worth pick 6 to us, then yes.

What was never asked was should we trade pick 6 (if we had it) or use it in the draft, which is what you are hypothetically proposing.

No. It’s absolutely not what was asked. The response that if “our team thought he was worth pick 6 to us” we would use it on Mac Andrew actually begs the question which is actually whether you believe on the evidence actually before the public at this time you would forgo the use of pick 6.

And the obvious answer is: if we had 6 and our recruiting team thought he was worth pick 6 to us then yes, he could very well be taken then. 

Your trying to shift the goal posts by bringing potential trades or evidence before the public into your response.

I simply answered the question asked, nothing more.

Would I pick him at #6? Absolutely not.

Late first rounder maybe. Sure he has potential, but is way too raw. That potential outweighs what he has produced up until now (as good as he has been). The hype is greater than his output for mine.

Correct weight with the rider that, subject to Covid19, he has the opportunity to show that he can consistently produce what he’s currently shown for only one quarter every few weeks, in which case, his ranking would go much higher.

Callum Twomey reports that potential No.1 pick Jason Horne has changed his name to Jason Horne-Francis, as a nod to the role his step-father and former AFL player Fabian Francis has played in his life. 

Francis was originally recruited to play for Melbourne but played only 1 game before moving to the Brisbane Bears (22 games) and finally to Port Adelaide (86 games).

Horne-Francis is a certainty to end up at North Melbourne.
