I agree that a 4 qtr effort will get us the points. We have been starting incredibly slowly which is the problem. If we can start by winning the contested possession and clearances I am confident we will out score them.

This has coincided with Buckley finally discovering a system that his team can play.

Goodwin's been out-coached repeatedly. Today will be fascinating.

Agreed. Buckley has a system proven to beat us.

But with some of his prime-movers out De Goey, Stephenson, Howe and Treloar, I don't think he has the players to implement it.

They are very good at spreading from the centre then fast play to a leading forward: Stephenson, Elliot, Cox etc.  Thieir fwd line looks pretty ordinary today and now we have May and Lever

They also plant an extra tall in our def which could be a problem.  An even bigger problem is they exploit Viney's 'no right side' mercilessly.  We need to watch that we don't get caught by them on these tried and true methods.

The key will be what our coaches learnt from the losses earlier this season to those Buckley like tactics.  Won't be happy if they haven't developed counter tactics or stubbornly stick to 'our way' even when it clearly isn't working.

Many of us never got off it.

Starting to accept we are an 8-12 team at best.

Let's wait til the game is over, shall we? Bloody hell.

Could be.  That argument rolled on for years.  And years.  And years.  No-one really understand why it kept getting renewed.

I'm surprised the Pies are favourites here. It was evens until the sides were announced so I guess Gawn/Jacko out and their cast of ins swings it in their favour

I was hoping to back them at over $2 to at least make some money if we lose, we should win this one but everyone knows how that goes with us.

I hate these late starts, I already have the pregame nerves ?

The initial odds are set by the bookies. (It was $1.90/$1.90.) Adjustments are made based on bets placed. So, in this instance a lot more people have obviously been backing the filth.

I want to see 4 quarters of serious effort and nothing less

The Club expect to make Finals THIS YEAR.

A TLDR reiteration from the above. Big congrats to Christian Salem on his 100th match today. Next in the frame for 2020/2021

Petracca: 95 / Oliver: 92 / Brayshaw: 90 / Bennell: 88 / Lever: 85 / Langdon: 78

The received wisdom that players start hitting their straps/feeling like they belong from the 80-game mark on (was that Roos?) comes from a single source from another era as far as I can recall. The big stat in my mind: Oliver and Harmes are now #3 and #4 in consecutive games played. Brayshaw, Trac and Langdon also sit in the top-20. This is invaluable. The core builds and learns together. #dynasty.

I've questioned Salem's toughness recently, but watching the 100 game video before, I'd forgotten his toughness in a tackle. There is also a clearance out of the middle where he looks like silk. If only we could add him to our midfield too.

Couple of things about this mate.

RE: the tall behind the ball, we're playing slightly differently nowadays. We work the ball forward with more thought most of time, rather than the old bomb method. If Collingwood play one behind the ball, it'll enable Langdon to tear them to shreds behind the ball and through the midfield, as long as we use the ball well going inside.

RE: no right side for Viney, that's true, but hopefully the majority of his game takes place inside 50. Gus does kick on either side and Jack showed he can snap goals on his right inside 50.

I reckon we have a system now that can beat Collingwood even when fully fit, but it relies on us cleaning up our stoppage work and inside 50 delivery.

They have a first rate defence which i think will trouble us. Not sure at all we can post a winning score.

Pies may have a good backline but they themselves have had trouble all year posting large scores. Around 12 goals should win it for us.

I've maintained that Christian is always better on the angry pills. Recently scanning the 2017/18 threads on another matter and reflecting on those games reinforces that opinion. A super-tough kid but currently playing like Watts - in the sense that while Watts was a nice kick I always considered it overrated due to Jack commonly taking the short and safe option. Both players are capable of breaking across a line though. Never thought much of Salem as a pure defender (and always considered HF was his go) but he seems to have improved lately. Next step is taking the game on a little more as Hibberd and co. move toward retirement and take up other roles.

Edit: where do I find this 100-game highlight package? I switched to some tree-planting search engine and it's lacking somewhat . . .

Right decision to unleash Preuss, this is exactly why we have him as insurance. At worst he will make a banged up Grundy even more battered and soften him for periods TMac needs to go in against he or Cameron. I would have played Rivers ahead of Jones or AVB as surely a fumbly Harmes comes out of the backline and locks in on Sidebottom. Keen to see how we use Viney to allow Brayshaw’s continued momentum and hope to see Weid continue his promising form. Amazed that they dropped Stephenson who we generally struggle for a match up on.

Must say I have been disappointed in Jones' form since his return. The pace of the game appears to have moved beyond his capability, he tends to take one too many steps missing that critical first option and then either bombs long or gets run down from behind. He's definitely not a one touch player either as I find myself howling "grab the [censored]' pill Jonesy". I just can't find a suitable position for this great servant of the footy club.

Champion. Thanks AF. Most of those highlights were from HF (I understand the position provides more natural highlights) but loved the tackles.

I love the bit where he bursts through a contest at half back against GWS and then hits a leading Melbourne high forward on the wing. It was that last game against of 2015 at Etihad, from memory. He needs to do this more often from half back.

Quotes from commentators; "Get ball, hold ball" and "Collingwood score off turnovers".

I want the stupid taken out of our game.

If and when we are clean with the ball and kick straight we win. Goal pressure is needed.

We have been playing 4 quarters, bringing the pressure at contests, carrying and hunting in packs. The backline has been good. We can control momentum.

Collingwood has trouble kicking big scores.

Pickett for a few goals and some assist. Recognised recently with contract and rising star should give him plenty of self belief.

Melksham to play a blinder, as he is due.

Weids, May and lever to get a handful of marks each.

Hoping for no passengers.

C'mon Dees, take the angry pills, knock 'em off there pedestal.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
