Disgraceful umpiring to get Carltank the opportunity to win.

Crazy finish, think Freo are right to be aggrieved at that last free kick.

My Collingwood supporting dad back to his old tricks again comparing the 'injustice' to the 2018 Grand final. I mean give me a spell really.

Two of the worst free kicks you’ll ever see followed by one of the best kicks you’ll ever see.

Debate raging on Twitter right now about whether the free should have been downfield or not.

The kick went OOF so Carlton wasn't in possession of it when the free was committed.

I'm not sure, but I think the ball should have gone back to Docherty.

The free wasn't there, and the downfield may have been an error as well. Could have huge ramifications for the finals run home for both Fremantle and Carlton.

Not to mention it should not have been Newnes kick,  Gibbons was nearly 10 metres closer!

Both decision correct imo.  Taberner just tapped it straight out of bounds and Brayshaw smashed into Docherty well after disposal.

Flashback: Farmer's goal after the siren. Oh the pain! The pain of it all!

Pretty hard to pull up after an attempted smother in mid air but say it was a free kick it's not a free downfield surely.

Respectfully disagree, Brayshaw was in the air trying to smother. Didn't even hit him high. Play on.

Still one of the worst Saturday nights I've ever had!

Leave the ground and take responsibility.  Front on contact, late, I thought high but perhaps not.

From Melbourne’s point of view, I’m hoping that we can continue on our winning way and not have to worry about challenges from either of the teams in the Freo v Carlton game. However, since we have already played Carlton and have no control over what they do for the rest of the season, my preference was for them to win. Better to play against teams that have nothing to play for when we come up against the Dockers late in the season.

Never forget it. He was one of our family's favourite players. It was like he stuck a knife into our hearts.

Watching the 3 second GIF on Jon Ralph's twitter about 17 times after my 4th scotch I do think it was probably front on contact and a free but the downfield I just can't get my head around.

No doubt about it, The Wizard leaving Melbourne felt like that after the siren kick in itself. This brought on a whole new level of pain, a pain so great that, well, yeah..

Is this like the head is sacrosanct stuff? Come on it's AFL football, the game where the big men fly. Not the game where people get knocked over and we feel sorry for them.

Deliberate free definitely there, not this one though.

deliberate and and downfield completely there, however Gibbons should've had the shot as he was closest. Difficult to judge closest player in the heat of the moment so I understand the error. Good kick Newnes

AFL Rules state that if the ball is kicked OOB and a free kick is awarded before that happened, the Free kick is to be taken from where the infringement happened (where Docherty was hit), OR where the ball crossed the line, whichever is the greater penalty.

... except that's not what the rules say:

Quote

17.1.2 Awarding Free Kicks
Unless otherwise stated in these Laws, a Free Kick can be awarded at any location on the Arena and shall be taken where it is awarded or where the football is at the time, whichever is the greater penalty against the offending Team.

the issue here is "at any location on the Arena" , because OOB is not on the Arena.

edit: actually, it is:

Quote

Arena: the Playing Surface and all of the area between the Playing Surface and the perimeter fence, including any break in the perimeter fence.

i still don't believe either free kick was warranted, but it's moot.

  • GAMEDAY: Western Bulldogs

It's Game Day and the Demons will be running out on the field with a new Head Coach, albeit a caretaker, for the first time in 3,060 days when they face the Western Bulldogs at the MCG today. What do you want to see from the Demons in the first match of the Post Simon Goodwin era?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
