the filth

definitely tom phillips; right where we want him in terms of age (25 in 2021), role (outside runner with decent footskills), and ability (he's played some ripper games, particularly on the g). still in contract so can't see them being keen on losing him, but they have a lot of talent - and a lot of father-son talent - coming through that needs games and can play similar roles. would the crocked tom langdon want to play with his brother? pies' backline has been their strength and while langdon is in his pre-agency year i'd be in his ear telling him about darren burgess and how he'll be playing with his brother. the situation with jaidyn stephenson is really interesting; keeping a keen eye on that one as he's clearly a talent. pies are one team who DO need points - they've got quite a few father-sons coming thru, with nick daicos already being talked up - so we could get some things out of them that would benefit our side and help them

preferences: stephenson, phillips, langdon

possible trade: hawks' 2nd in 2020 PLUS our 2nd in 2021 for langdon and phillips

Can't see us being big players in any trading/draft swaps this year - we've already had our top pick a year in advance and Kossie is a ripper.

But if there's one player whose name will keep coming up in a trade now it is Stephenson and whilst we all know he can play, he's now got a reputation for being a little bit timid. Personally I'd like to see him on a wing, rather than as a forward and we do still have one wing spot available that's not nailed into the furniture. As Rising Star winner, it's hardly likely Pies would entertain our second round pick for him, so we would have to trade a player.

The Pies have spanked us in trades in recent times - Dawes, Lumumba, Howe, Kennedy, Dunny - guess which ones exceeded expectations at their new clubs?

But I reckon there's one player who has a bit of risk factor like Stephenson and who meets their most pressing need of key position and that's Harrison Petty. I'm worried to suggest him, because I reckon he's still a huge talent and if he didn't have OP he'd most likely be in our side at the moment. He also can play forward or back, which is why they'd consider him.

Very curious to see what impact list reductions would have on the offseason.

if the lists for example were cut to 35 we would potentially need to look at cutting 10 plus players to make room for the additions including our 3 required draft selections.

And if list sizes do come back to 35, there will be a lot of good fringe players wanting to get another chance at other clubs.

Definitely, but how many blokes are we going to have to bring any players in? some teams could be looking at huge turnovers as a result of this which i suppose for a team like the crows may be a blessing in disguise

No we should only trade players not needed this year and be very selective.

The Petty's  Gus and like are NOT FOR TRADE as we complete the jigsaw towards a list that will challenge for the next 5 years.

No mids at this stage are tradable and KP players forward or back should be on OUR radar to assist strengthen our line up.

An elite Runner like Stephenson makes  sense and Polec on the cheap might be possible but I feel he has lost traction at Notth because if his lack of physicality. Goody wouldn't tolerate that I suspect.

Interesting stage of 2020 as we build and who knows what the real situation Re recruits may be at the end of October!!

For those that were thinking of 'trading' Viney ie letting him go as an FA, it isn't happening.

Goodwin said in his press conf today that the club and Jack have been talking contracts for a while and he will be with the club for a long time to come. ?

Yeah, you've got it backwards. We wouldn't have to compensate GWS for Williams, the AFL will just give them a draft pick, whole we'd have to trade for Saad, unless he went to the drafts, but he won't do that. Essendon are horrendous to deal with and will want Trac, Gawn and Oliver for Saad.

Ooh....

What if Saad refuses to sign a new contract with them, which is what media suggests at the moment?

Then he'd have to go into the draft/pre-season draft and he's up for grabs to anyone. This virtually never happens though, so not worth entertaining. I think there's going to be a lot of reports of players refusing to sign contracts through the media, but really at the moment it's hard for them to sign as they don't know about list sizes/salary caps. The week that is announced look for a huge amount of re-signings.

Phillips is another one I coached as a kid and I coach with his sister (who I also coached when she was a kid). Out and out Magpie. Would be very tough to prize.

even if he effectively doesn't have a roll and can't get paid due to outsized contracts for moore and de goey?

Reckon they'll be keeping him, because they need to angle their list towards youth, given how aging it already is.

brisbane bears

i find it interesting that there's talk about cedric cox but i have no idea why he hasn't kicked on since being drafted; just no spot for him up there? would love alex witherden but we definitely don't have the assets to trade for him given what i think he'd be valued at, but i have no idea whether brisbane have some intangible 'academy' that they can pick the eyes out of in this year's / next year's drafts. can't see us going anywhere near the likes of mathieson, but there has been some talk that tom joyce might be 'gettable' but given that he's from wa i'd expect him to go there rather than to melbourne. i rate noah answerth but that might be just cos he helped me win supercoach match-up one week a few years ago

preferences: witherden, answerth, cox

possible trade: hawthorn's 2nd in 2020, and our 2nd and 3rd in 2021 for witherden so they have more magical, mystical 'points'

every point u make from here on in is completely irrelevent now that youve refered to them as the bears

Can't see too many teams taking a punt on anyone they aren't quite sure of with list reductions. think guys with any sort of baggage might have to play a year in the 2's in 2021 if they're on the market.

Wouldn't mind us having grabbing Mason Wood. word is he is likely to be delisted. so get him for nothing. good mark, knows where the goals are

Gee when you mention those names the pies sure have dumped some crap players onto us.

Come home Jesse ?

The bloke has been through more than most his age, but he IS home now.

His personal issues have seemingly not gotten any better and his form has absolutely nosedived. Either of those things would preclude him from being taken back at the Dees, but both of them make it an absolute certainty.

Not sure what the deal is with Freo, they really seem to have some cultural issues.

You must have missed the North game against the dees where you ran around having absolutely zero influence at all. Maybe ask North supporters what they think of him? They want him retired to get games into kids.

Fancy that huh...

I wouldn't exactly listen to the fans. Half you demonlanders wanted Oliver dropped. game set and match

I agree with you that Jesse has been through more adversity than most in his life, but what is he to do if Freo aren't playing him?

He is reportedly training and fit, but Freo are overlooking him at the selection table and apparently trialling him as a defender. If he doesn't get a game this week or the next couple of weeks, you have to wonder what Freo are doing... He is too good to be playing in the reserves.

Obviously all rumour and speculation right now, but if there is disharmony between Hogan and Freo, and Peter Bell decides to trade him at season's end, not wholly implausible to suggest he may make a return to Melbourne FC. The only other possibility which would preclude Melbourne would be if he were to go to West Coast.

Total speculation and all of the above probably won't happen. I don't see Freo trading Hogan at the end of the year, but if it were to eventuate, Melbourne surely has a chance.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
