Not really interested in that Prelim any more. Unfortunately not relevant to the last two years. So you're happy with this season because we barely won a few more games than we lost?

As for Saints and Carlton. I'm talking about the future not the past. Lets talk at the end of next season. We started our rebuilds way before them and Saints have sailed past us. On the basis of this year there's every chance Blues will pass us next year if we are treading water. Lions and Port have also already sailed past us. This comp waits for no one.

You have not done your Maths ITB.

We are now better than Bombers  and Hawks!!!

I used to go season by season like that but it's too unpredictable.

You win games and the ladder spot takes care of itself.

You don't think there is a mountain full of  improvement in our list of Young  players from Jacko Kossie Riv Lockhart ?

Also a sustainable game plan plus our listers from about 15 to 30 need a reality check. Oh and Brown Phillips and msybe Narkle??

Didn't Plapp have the mids And the forwards recently ? Since 2018?

Agree he seemed fine at Casey as Numero 1, but for  the lines not so good I reckon.

You're doing admirably well at remaining a cup half full person.

I'm jaded after the past 13 years. We've been talking about all the reasons why we are going to be better for years. I really hope you're right.

That would be the mad Choco Williams who decided out of spite that he would hold a press conference and announce that his assistant coach Dean Bailey would be Melbourne's next coach.

The mad Choco Williams who in his greatest moment as the siren rang making him a Premiership Coach could only think of having a go at the Club's main sponsor.

The mad Choco Williams who has burnt off a series of minor clubs which were the only places he could get a gig.

I don't think so. The days of getting a mad firebrand into the place are long gone.

Do you have some kind of personal issue with Mark "Choco" Williams? If you don't like him that's fine. I personally cannot stand Mick Malthouse.

Is he mad? Probably.....but aren't all AFL coaches? Either way, he is still a Premiership coach and he helped develop Richmond stars like Dustin Martin who he challenged to kick 4 goals in the 2020 AFL Grand Final via a text message and Dustin did it. There was a newspaper article about it the other day actually. Here is the link about the story: https://www.sen.com.au/news/2020/11/01/mark-williams-pre-grand-final-message-to-dustin-martin/

I think Mark "Choco" Williams is well worth the risk and his experience, talents and expertise are being wasted down at Werribee in the VFL. We desperately need to improve the development of our players. If you have anyone else you can suggest then I am all ears. Anyway, we can agree to disagree.

Just read the club email.

not impressed project runway GIF

We got rid of heaps of people which is understandable but have brought in just one new highly regarded coach in Yze.
Same old faces going to somehow fix the same old problems?

And I still have no idea what credentials Richardson has for this promotion?

Alan Richardson to sit in the box on game days? No Mahoney in there seeing he is more corporate now?

Makes sense why they’ve re-signed Jonesy now

nothing mentioned about egan and burgess

Guess they just stay in their respected roles. No announcement needs to be made on that i'm guessing.

Seems like drastic compromises everywhere.

Co-GM's doesn't sound right. Mahoney will be desperate to get out of the club now.

Richo gets taken away from hands on coaching which should be his bread and butter and put in to a decision making role which requires an analytical mind which I don't really think suits him.

Surely the ideal structure is 1 person who can administer everything then having the right people with a variation of skills around them.

Get a list manager who's great at managing contracts. Get a recruiting team that can recruit. Get a coaching team that can coach. Get a footy admin team that can make sure the boots and shined and the bills are paid.

Chaplin did oversee one of the better defences in the competition this year, so he is hardly a yawn.  He did a very good job for us in 2020.

And I'm not sure what people expected with the drop off in how much money we can spend in the FD.  Yze is a great addition, but we couldn't do a whole lot more than that really.  I'm very interested to see how Stafford goes in the forward coaching role, while Yze should re-invigorate a midfield that, to me, was a little stale in it's approach this season.

Same goes for the coaching. We're stuck with Goodwin obviously, right or wrong. We're stuck with Chaplin because he just fits the kind of mediocrity we so love. Yze comes in for what may be the 2nd most difficult job in footy. Then Stafford gets promoted to the toughest assistant job around in our forwards coach despite very little experience in coaching because why the heck not?

Plapp had years of experience and did a pretty decent job dealing with a forward line that was Melksham, the ghost of McDonald and 6 blokes under 50 games.

Personally I think dividing the GM role is a very good thing the way it’s been defined, irrespective of the $3m budget cuts.

Don't reckon that's one of his KPIs.

Well, here we go:

Alan Richardson, General Manager of AFL Football Performance

Josh Mahoney, General Manager of Football Facilities and Administration

Plapp, Rooke, Cross, Mathews gone.

Yze mids, Stafford forwards, Chaplin backs.

For everyone, like me, a little underwhelmed, apparently there are more assistants coming in, so this isn't the final setup.

Also, a chance Mahoney won't stick around, he's interviewed for a role at another club.

I don't. Almost by definition can't you only have 1 GM of the Department? The one person who works very close with the coach to set the direction of the footy program?

There was too much on Mahoney's plate, but only because our list manager is some former copper, our coaching team was inexperienced and lacked direction and there's probably lack of support all around him. He might not have been good enough either. But find someone better to take the top job, and/or the coaches job and upgrade the senior  footy department staff.

Mahoney negotiating the Ben Brown trade from both sides would sure be something. He could have the deal done at 9:01 on the first morning of the trade period and have somehow overpaid on both sides.

Up in the air until Pert's review is delivered to the board.

The talk is the writing is on the wall for Matthews & Plapp. Rooke is gone and the VFL coach will have no AFL based duties.

Sure was ;)

Wasnt Stafford a ruckman as a player if my memory serves me correctly.

So WTF is he doing as a forwards coach.

I would rather an former experienced forward player as our forwards coach. Thought that would be a common sense move (maybe not).

141 afl goals. I’m guessing that’s probably in the top 8 for most goals from all forwards coaches.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG.
