Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The coach seems to think he is doing his role, only one that matters really

It's only on here that the notion he is struggling appears

Demonland needs a weekly target to lock onto, otherwise there is no opportunity for some posters to contribute, as they thrive on negativity

Then the coach has low expectations of a key fwd, but I’m sure as you’ve asked him then you know all.

You love to roll out “it’s my opinion, deal with it” but jump on others for having their own opinion.

Of course this is just my opinion, and we all know opinions are neither right nor wrong. Toot toot, old chaps.

But your opinion is not mine so it’s wrong and I’ve asked all the people I follow around and they form my opinion so neeerrr.

And if they played now they would play for the times.   You dont just lose your footballing ability if you get transported to another era.  If you are a star at Aussie Rules, you are a star.     Whether your name is Ablett, Blight, Carey, Lockett, Neitz, Hird, Buckley, Fyfe, Kernahan,  Voss, Glendinning, Barassi,  etc etc...  those types of elite talent would dominate any era.

Youre not making much sense.

Sorry, 'a low info base' something you buy in a pack from IKEA?

Just putting an opinion, you don't have to like or agree with it, I am sure my self esteem could handle it, just don't read it

I am more interested in whether any player not picked against Essendon, did enough in the practice match, to warrant selection against Geelong

Fine, your opinion, I disagree

p.s. in case you haven't noticed Fyfe is still playing in this era, also which Ablett?

An opinion is neither right or wrong, not sure which part of that, the opinion makers on here don't get

You can disagree

Been playing and watching footy for 43 years now, so have a pretty good understanding and saw the players play

Unfortunately my opinion, formed by not only watching but listening to ex players, particularly ordinary ones like Leigh Matthews, having the same opinion as I do, does not line up with the herd mentality opinion, that usually rules on forums, so it is belittled or just stated as plain wrong

Leigh Matthews wouldn’t get a game today. All his behind the play king hits would be captured on 4k Cameras.
Remind him of that next time you see him for a chat old Chap...

I think he'd get a game. He'd just have to play differently.

And while I'm not defending his approach, he was doing what he was allowed to do by the rules in place at the time. The administration of the game then was more problematic than the actions of any individual. That's both in relation to the physical as well as psychological aspects of the game (using the word "psychological" possibly incorrectly, but attempting to address things like racial abuse.)

No. He played with true White Line Fever. Have heard him say it.
Like Mal Brown. He lined people up and took them out.
not all players were thugs back then, but those 2 were

You really think Matthews wouldn't have modified the way he played if he had been required to do so? Apart from the flaws you refer to, I think he's the best player I've ever seen (excluding those for whom I only saw the tail ends of their careers, such as Whitten, Polly Farmer, Barassi, Skilton etc). I think with that talent, he would have changed the way he approached the game to ensure he could continue to play.

Mal Brown I'm not so sure. I suspect his VFL career was very brief, in part, because he couldn't change.

He might have tried, but a young Matthews was a thug on the field

While Lethal is my number 1 player over the last 50 years, he was a thug, who would king hit from behind, when he went after a player probably because he wasn't having a great day. No, the rules did not allow him to do that.

My favourite player in the same period and also most talented was the great Robbie. Top footballer and top bloke. Sadly missed.

I should rephrase what I meant. The enforcement of the rules was different then. Players were able to get away with actions which today they would not, partly because of technology (more and better cameras today) and partly because of an attitude difference where thuggery was (comparatively) tolerated. All I'm saying is that if the rules in his playing day were enforced the way they were today, he would adapt and still likely be the best player of his generation.

Indeed.

And the problem Goody faces if not TMac then who?

Weed is the obvious one but seems out of favor. Brown is not big enough to play the key forward role we need TMac to play. And with Petty injured there literally is no one else who can fill the power forward role.

Unless Goody decides to troll Demonland and replaces TMac with OMac..

I think Brown is big enough, but is he good enough.?

I think the only MFC KPF star of yesteryear that would struggle today would be Jakovich. More than enough talent but he had attitude issues, didn’t like training all that much, wasn’t overly fit and was a free spirit who would not have liked being put in a straight jacket with all of today’s team rules and coaching.

He did play well in the practice match. Had he kicked decently v WC it would have been much closer

Spot on. The trolls ‘opinion’ on this matter is a testable assertion therefore it can be right or wrong.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
