Hibberd is a big worry for me and could come under real pressure if they persist with Harmes at half back.  It seems that they want Harmes to be playing the role that Hibberd was traded in for.  Strong body, accountable and long, accurate kick.  Hibberd has been battling for the last two years, but injuries in the back half have kept the pressure off.

I too would be surprised if Bennell plays, but could easily see Sparrow, Bedford, AVB or ANB filling that position.  Sparrow and Bedford in particular were showing some very promising signs this year.

I am at loss with Harmes in the backline.

I think this is a pivotal game for Goodwin especially if we lose playing the same way as last year and in round 1 this year. If we've fixed the problem then we win comfortably, lose and the knives will be out.

One thing I'll be looking for is use of our dominance in the ruck. Why we don't have four set plays with say two variants per play just amazes me. I also wonder if our tactics are better served by a secondary centre bounce than the primary bounce

No use banging it into the forward fifty for the inevitable ball up that brings 24 plus players into the forward fifty.

That's the likely team but it's very conservative. Five odd players who on recent form don't deserve a game but reputation gets them selected. O what we would give for a pre season resumption hit out.

Assuming they stick with Harmes at half back then I'd go with Joel Smith over Oscar, Hibberd keeps his spot as he's the logical match up on Jack Martin, Jetta gets another run.

Brayshaw keeps his spot because he has to be given first go on Cripps, but Gus needs to deliver.

The forward line is tricky but I lean towards going with Weid as the second tall and then throwing Jackson in as a wildcard, especially if they think his tackling and ground ball work is as good as most smalls. I maintain the belief in Chandler as the best small to pair with Kossie, particularly if we want to use Fritsch and Melksham up the ground more in a taller set up than round 1.

He is probably our best tagger, especially midfield and is qiute a decent forward. Play him as a midfield tagger unless your not going to use one and then rotating with Petracca in the forward line.

We had all off season to fix it and we didn't. I just don't have faith in the game plan and the constant bombing in. I doubt they've revised it. 

We have the cattle, not the execution.

Tomlnison interviewed at training today seems to be pushing for Harley.

You would think that Hogan was still down there. Since his loss we have no play who can take a contested mark. We are very one dimensional, every side knows we will just bomb it in and set up for it.

It’s one thing to bring the knives out, it’s another thing altogether to pay out 2.5 years of his contract in this current financial climate.

Id say anyone with a contract is very, very safe to the foreseeable time-being.

How do we then pay a new coach?

Would the AFL give us further assistance if we’re throwing that sort of money away?

As is said, I see contracts being honoured as very few clubs will be able to pay anyone out.

 

 

FWIW I still believe Goody will be a very good AFL coach and we’ll perform well this year, so for me, it’s a moot point.

The money comes from the absence of the drop in membership if we keep him.

Hope you are right if not the wonders who signed him to. 3 year extension before one game was played in 2019 will be looking very stupid.

Petracca getting more midfield time,  instead of mostly on the flank.  + Viney, + Oli, + Brayshaw...  + occasional game time when he's ready, for Jackson.

We don't have spaces for all of them,  so some have to grow new skills.  Harmes's proficiency inside,  means he can go out,  to develop further in the defence,  for when we'll need him to do that, in our future.

AFL has given the go ahead for possible curtain raiser scratch matches involving the players not engaged in the first team. 

A good move in my opinion as it will give all the players a hit out and give them a chance to impress for selection

Serious Answer: Yes. I will be watching when we play Saturday week. Really looking forward to the game.

I would also be interested in watching the curtain raiser if it was on in the same way I would watch the Casey games. Like to see how they are developing.

This was raised but just in the context of scratch matches.

Do you have a recent source.

Cannot see how they would allow them to be played as curtain raisers given ground conditions. Also hard to see how full teams could be fielded given the usual run of injuries.

Rivers is really pushing his name up for selection with his training form.

Hibberd and a few others will be on notice.

Personally on form and potential I would make the change now but I don't think Goody will do it.
