Strawbs suspension was a big moment. He won our b and f that year. But let’s face he wouldn’t have helped with the shalacking the following week.

Maybe, he may have helped some of our younger players walk a bit taller though.  There were some key players who were thoroughly intimidated by the occasion -not mentioning any names, but Jimma wasn't one of them.

It might also have helped if we kicked the very gettable goals that we missed in the first quarter.

Da Rui deserved a thump for what he'd just done. Strawbs barely connected with his wild swing. As usual, the retaliator suffered.

Losing O'Dwyer unbalanced us badly.   I think Hughes had to play back-up ruck in the GF.   Stynes was only a 2nd yr ruck at that  stage.

What a great job Duursma does on Kernahan.

We had some tough players then, in Grinter, Hughes, Spalding, and the "string bag full of set-squares"... Steve O'Dwyer.

Earlier in the game Dorotich gave Duursma (I think) a proper knee to the head as Duursma was on the ground and Dorotich just ran straight through.

I have to agree Strawbs was a massive loss for us the following week, upset our structure and we lost one of our few enforcers which were needed against a Hawks team out to make amends for 87. We still wouldn't have won but we probably wouldn't have lost by a record margin (until 119 in 2007) either.

We beat the Blues and the Pies 3 times each in 88 and that'll always put a smile on my face.

They played 3 tough finals & not much left in the tank  for the GF , hawks had a week off before prior in the final 5 format.

Watching now. Sensational game. Hairy Garry has been fantastic as has Jamie Duursma.

Bloke in the crowd wearing a full face motorcycle helmet.

Jeez the Ricky Jackson goal had a fair deviation off the post.

I can only think that the jumper clash and mud caused this. Even on replay, mine and the commentators first thought is that two Carlton players jump in the ball after a fumble. Jackson pulls the jumper of the players laying over the ball, hand ? raise in appeal of a free. I am certain the ump thinks two Carlton players are laying on the ball and plucks a free kick. The commentators watch back the replay and realise it’s a Melbourne player and Carlton player on the ground and can’t believe a free was paid.

Then he hits the post. He is on his knees in disgust at missing and the umpire signals a goal. Extraordinary!

Why are we always playing finals at Waverley in 87/88 ?

Prelim was always played at Waverley in those days. In 1987 we played the first 2 finals at the G, and in 88 we played the 1st Semi v Collingwood at the G.

Flintoff, a very underrated performance!

Why? Some sort of agreeememt with the big wigs sitting in that awful solitary megatron stand towering over the plebs on the commentary side wing?

  • Demonland changed the title to 1988 Preliminary Final

I nearly choked when the commentator ? Ian Robertson accused Melbourne of trying to rough Carlton up.

RhysJones was running around hitting guys behind play, and Da Rui was trying to make up for his lack of skill by punching guys. Kernahan had a swing or two, too.

Gary Lyon did a good hip and shoulder on Silvagni, and none of our guys were distracted by Carlton's tactics.

Strawbs lost it when DaRui thumped (?Lovell from memory,it wasn't on the replay).

He rushed in and swung an inaccurate haymaker, was reported, and missed the GF

BEST PLAYERS FOR MINE WERE

Stretch, Lyon, Jackson, Duursma, Wight, Grinter, Spalding good after half time and Flintoff very good when he came on!

Ian Robertson was Carlton through and through, always saw things through his blues glasses

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.
