GAMEDAY: Demons vs GWS (2016)

I give us a sniff.

We went 3-0 in the JLT series including a great win over Port over there.

Watch out for that Oliver kid making his debut today.ย I know we all think we shouldโ€™veย ย taken Parish in last yearโ€™s draft but you never know, he might surprise us all.

Should beย a nice day, overcast and in the low 20โ€™s.

Apparently Freo have loaned us Jesse Hogan back for the 4th quarter onlyย , hopefully he has an impact ?

I have a feeling Ben Kennedyโ€™s going to have an impact today, and heโ€™s going to be that small forward weโ€™ve been craving for, for the next 8-10 years.

Should be a close game, Iโ€™m tipping us by 2 points I wonder if Sportsbet will take my betย

4 points massive if we get them today. We will be going 2-0 after next week.ย

You know I cannot remember this game at all.

2016 was not exactly a memorable season but which ones ever were for the MFC.

Wait I remember 2016 .........the Bulldogs won the flag and we became the longest premiership drought club. And then there was 2017 which was probably worse

Be massive if we get the 4 points to open the season.

Weโ€™ll go 2-0 next week as weโ€™re only playing Essendonโ€™s VFL side next week....Not even Melbourne could drop a game like that, right?

Any tips for first goal?

Any idea how much Scullyโ€™s paying for first goal?

I will watch it to see the classic ย Watts.

I'm not doing anything today. Where's it being played? I might head along although I guess given the circumstances (two poor teams, etc) I expect the ground will look empty.

I went to this game, the first game I'd attended since the 1987 Semi against the Swans. I left during the third quarter, my head shaking, wondering just why Melbourne players kept kicking the ball to GWS players. I walked to Richmond station, got off the train at Box Hill and checked on my phone to see how much we'd been beaten by...

Matt Jones playing well early on.

This team is more balanced than 2020. Not saying it is better, just more balanced.

what did you think of the gameplan?

The forward line looked more potent back then with Hogan, Watts,ย ย Pedo and Garlett.

Exactly. Sport on. Natural forwards doing natural forward things.ย

Our gameplan works relatively well against GWS as long as you can pressure their ball carrier. If you allow them the handball to space they will cut us to pieces. Of course while their kicking skills have improved and ours have gone the other way over the last two years it has become harder to maintain that pressure.

Round 23 2018 was a highlight game for me. Mind you it was a lot closer than it ended up had they kicked straight in the second quarter.

Battle of defences ATM. No one can score.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Nightโ€™s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourneโ€™s memorable premiership triumph.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, weโ€™ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binmanโ€™s Stats Files. Not because it isnโ€™t important; quite the opposite. Itโ€™s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourneโ€™s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last yearโ€™s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although itโ€™s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sundayโ€™s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to foolโ€™s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven Kingโ€™s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
