GAMEDAY: Rd 01 vs West Coast

well that season didn't last long.

You wonder whether they will cancel the game this afternoon. It seems rather pointless given the South Australian lock down. WA will be the next one to announce similar rules and of course Qld.

How often do Melbourne teams play in Perth on a  Sunday night?  And in 30 degree heat?

You think wed get a 7 day break after that, but no, we are back at 1 pm at the G on Saturday.  Ridiculous scheduling.

heard on the grapevine that this has not been a good trip for Melbourne. They had to move hotels and have had little sleep and stability pre-game. Players vomiting from the overpowering smell of disinfectant. This will be the last game for a while, men or women. The only option seems to have all the teams playing and staying in a remote venue and doing as many games as they can in a month or so. It seems this is more to meet advertising contracts not footballing needs. To continue the existing season will be near impossible and may damage the AFL brand. Put a line through this season and maybe plan a carnival type format in a few months if it is safe.

Well we have no chance today if  thats true.

I don't know, if it was me I would be pretty angry and determined, if the team could be inspired. Wins and losses will be meaningless in a dead season.

Surely this can't be true?

AFL wouldn't let this happen surely?

terrible if true, why bother playing a pointless game

Time for today's game to be cancelled. No use risking injury to the players in an irrelevant game

If the above is accurate and some of our players are unwell and vomiting I hope the club has taken appropriate steps to get the game called off. I think this a little different from eating a slightly dodgy burrito the night before.

Yes it does.

It fits under mental health.  You cant tell people to lock themselves inside with zero stimulation unless you want the mental illness epidemic to get even worse, and mass suicides to occur.

The AFL must continue on.

Not a chance it will happen now...

Ours, if we make it that far will be the last game in quite a while.

I really wish the AFL had of done the right thing early and saved our players the distress of travelling at this time.

Not just our players but all players, you can see their minds aren't 100% engaged in the games to date.

oh please,get a grip

The South Australian border closure has an exception for professional sporting teams with an approved disease control process in place.

We could still see the season limping on.

So there is no simulation available other than AFL?  Which century is that?  Not the 21st.    I don't recall reading about mass suicides in Europe in 1348, or England in 1665 or anywhere in 1918.   And sorry to be brutal, but a few compared to mass deaths by infection?

So some hermetically sealed footballers will be fine? I like it. As long as they're not carrying any fruit.

Just a thought.

This could well be the last game of the year.

Then it follows...

If we win, we are the 2020 Premiers.

I might be wrong but I’m pretty there’s no hotel stays on this trip.. it’s a fly in/ fly out on the same day process

I call BS. There was video of the players gathered yesterday watching the women’s match. They seemed up and about.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
