i'm not a particular fan of brayshaw - too sloppy in his disposal, jogs from contest to contest - but i'm hoping that he bounces back big time in 2020

    I'm a big fan of 'good' Brayshaw, who has that special talent for acting now and thinking ahead at the same time, which can make him a very smart and creative player. He also has 'pretty good at everything' in his favour which can translate to having no weakness. But 'poor' Brayshaw is just a midfield meat-and-potatoes player and starts to look merely 'nothing special, yeah, ok' at everything, which starts to look like having no strengths.

    I'm optimistic. I'm also optimistic about Viney, Tomlinson and Langdon so I guess I'm saying I think we're about to show off the greatest ever midfield mix.

    I hope Gus has a great year as he's one of my favorites. He seem to slip at the start of last year when he was pushed out to the wing & couldn't get his normal inside mid roll.....then again all our midfielders struggled last year especially with the pressure of the new 666 rule, so Gus certainly wasn't on his own. His kicking is sloppy & often just blazes away, so I'd like to see him improve in this area & get back to his 2018 form.

    Maybe they wanted him to increase his tank,  as well,  so played him out,  on the wing,  and a prayer.

    To be fair, he is a pure inside mid.  When he played that role he came third in the brownlow.  Last year they tried him all over the park in every role we needed shoring up and his game really suffered for it.  If he plays in the centre square all year he'll be great value.

    I see him as part of the 'ínside' midfield rotation along with Petracca, Viney, Oliver, Harmes, and occasionally, Melksham for a bit of variety.

    Gus, when in form, is one of those players that seems to have plenty of time to sort through and select the right option. I find it difficult to judge any of our players on last season form. The players were not properly prepared and the team structure, fitness and form made it impossible for any player to play to their potential

    Big fan, but has been badly misused. That is the clubs fault for having 3000 inside mids and nothing outside. His best is a grade, his worst doesn’t have him in the best 22

    So what to do?

    Trade him. And move Harmes back to the midfield - you know Goody, the actual position he plays his best footy at. 

    I think Brayshaw's football will flourish at another side, unfortunately for us.

    You don't recruit 3 inside Mids to your list,  and they all turn out stars.  You recruit 3000 insider's,  hoping to find 3 beauts.

    And you recruit 3000 runners, hoping to find 3 skilled beaut running players to solidify the team.   That's how it works.  

     

    If you end up with too many good mids,  then you go to the trade table,  looking for a decent swap.  For something we lack.

    At his best a clearance beast and tremendous goal kicking midfielder. 

    Currently a lazy footballer since the start of 2019 season, no defensive running at all.... work rate improvement much needed. 
     

    Brayshaw to half back and put Harmes back in the guts.

    Still more upside than many others. Wondering if his concussion issues have affected him physically and mentally. 

    As with everything else at the moment, views and decisions on players and coach are probably going to be delayed for 6-12 months.  The impact on clubs, their finances and their viability is going to be huge. As Eddie said yesterday, clubs will have to rebuild from ground up.  This will mean massive upheaval and loss of players, coaching and support staff. 

    The club may still exist but it will be a changed organisation.

    Thought Angus was very timid in the first half (fumbled and hand passed one goal) but his second half Looked like the 2018 version Was neatly back in town.

    No neither are half backs 

    Both are on ballers and need to run defensively more.

    Sounds a little bit alike,  a recent convert to hard training and disciplines,  at our club.

    Unfortunately,  we might not see this convert for a while,  to gauge his newly turned over Leaf.?

     

    I wonder IF Brayshaw wants it enough,  to leave other things go.?

    Name the name

    Brayshaw has battled his way back from concussion issues, maybe the 'coach' didn't see him in tears when he got knocked out at VFL level in a comeback game

    To even be playing still at AFL level is a testament to the fact he wants to be an AFL footballer, could have walked away and no body would have blamed

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
