Agree that Harmes is wasted at half back. Looked much better when involved through the middle. Hibberd probably close to being dropped. Just a liability way too often. Salem to replace him.

What a game from Tomlinson and Viney! Hoping with Pickett and brown in the team it straightens us up.

Spargo was good

Think he had 1 kick in the first half but had a much better second half and some important touches in scoring chains.

Pickett, Lockhardt, Bedford - all in - big threats to defensive lines. Drop Weed, put in Preusse when fit again. Drop OMac. Marty Hore is a must for the backline in tandem with Lever and Harmes.

Preuss is a liability really, not really good at anything in particular. Slow when the balls on the ground, and not overly dominant in the air as a mark. In the ruck he holds his own but that's Gawn's role so personally I'd rather Jackson or Weid who add a bit more as a forward option. Jackson looks to contribute when the ball hits the deck as well.

Lockhart generally looks good, seems to cough it up at times though. I think Rivers will go past him sooner or later.

Our setup is still wrong. We push up to high. Geddy Lyon had it right. We need a forward deep at all times to stretch the opposition defensive zone & provide a lead up target

that's a good point

After playing well last week against North Spargo was barely sighted. Pickett or Bedford could potentially add a bit more in that role.

What game were you watching? Spargo's quick hands and  smart position were one of the highlights of the night.

We are finishing games strongly

That is what i take out of these early games.

keep up the training regime Mr Burgess

Melksham and Fritsch are going to be a fantastic forward duo this year if they can play 20+ games together. Both seriously skilled and classy footballers.

Viney was BOG but how annoying was Huddo trying to dob Jack in for his sling tackle on Stratton. I concede it wasn’t a good look but Stratton wasn’t hurt.

Stratton deserves more than a sling tackle.

He is actually a fairly dirty player and personally I wouldn't be sad to see him cop a bit from another team.

Does Viney or Milkshake get rubbed out?

Knowing the MRP / Christian inconsistency they will both get 2 weeks. (MFCSS)

Relax it will be just a warning.

Not convinced with Harmes in the backline. Reckon he's wasted there. Performed heaps better in 2nd half when thrown on the ball and forward. Put Salem back in his spot and throw him back into the middle even if it is off the bench.

Learning him that role.   I'd rather him multi-skilled and in the team, than not in.

Tracca, Viney, Brayshaw, Oliver, - - - - Harmes,,,, Salem, AVB, Sparrow, Jordan ,Dunkley, Lockhart, Jones,

Been super impressed with Lockhart. Certainly didn't picture him as a defender when he was in the forward like last year. I think he only missed one target all night when he bit off more than he could chew on the switch. Kicking has real penetration.

I think he might have had 3 or 4 possessions up to half time. Maybe he had a few more after half time but in general play I don't think he did that much. One or two flashes here or there is hardly something for him to hang his hat on as a small forward. Did he hit the scoreboard? How many goal assists did he create?

That Viney is such a liability. If the club had guts we would have traded him

??

Signs of a game plan with the ball - use the wings and the diagonal switch to the half forward.

Signs of a better game plan without the ball - those same wingers covering off and a nicely balanced zone.

Signs of individual player improvement - Viney fit, Langdon/Tomlinson on the wings, Jones with more freedom, Petracca, Lockhart at half back, Spargo around half forward.

That's about all you can hope for.

There's a few personnel concerns I have but they are mostly the ones we know well.

In terms of game plan concerns the biggest bug bear from last year that I'm not convinced we've fixed yet is the multiple demons flying at the same ball. At both ends of the ground but particularly in the forward line.

He was terrific the year before when playing mainly as a small defender at Casey. That's when I started wondering if Nev's apprentice was ready & waiting for us

No, Rivers will go past Hibbered.

Highlight of the preseason was Langdon and Tomlinson's two way running stopping us from being carved up time and again in transition. I can't recall many loose goals out the back if any through the pre season. It's something that has been irritating to watch for numerous seasons so I'm glad it's been addressed.

Langdon and Tomlinson, ANB, + Bedford when picked, will give us a huge change from how we've been.

Improvement through games on larger grounds,  and lasting out games better.  Will make us tougher to play against.

Only the 3 score involvements and 1 goal assist but didn't have a clanger, had good pressure numbers and I thought he was getting to the right spots around half forward and using the ball very cleanly.

Goals would be nice but I don't think that's what he's in the team for. It's more likely we have Pickett in the side if we want a dangerous crumber, but there's room for Pickett closer to goal and for someone like Spargo around half forward.

ANB had better numbers but his fumbles and poor approach to tackling will always cost us, where as Spargo did the same kind of role in a more efficient way.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
