Some of us don't have the luxury of working from home, and we have small businesses which employ people. If the kids don't go to school, we have two options, close our business (so 6 people lose their livelihood, including ourselves), or have their 70 year old grandparents look after them.

This is just us, but what about nurses? doctors? people working in food production? pharmaceuticals? 

If you close schools now, you are looking at prolonged closures, job losses, a greater hit to our economy and increased pressure on our already struggling health care system.

Kids are the least vulnerable to this disease, and while there is a  risk of infection within families, and while I applaud teachers for risking their own health, right now, this is the best option for the greater good.

Schools are being extra cautious and have cancelled all incursions, excursions, assemblies etc. 

Everyone is doing their best in what is a very difficult time. The less armchair experts get involved, and sprout unnecessary fear and panic, the better. 

 

P.S.- if you can, please support small businesses during this time. A lot won't survive this otherwise. 

It sucks and it is going to have a massive impact on the entire economy. I would not want to be a business owner right now.

But I don't think you can escape the impact. Whether we close things (like schools) down now or in 3 weeks, you're just delaying the inevitable and allowing things to get worse in the meantime.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) met recently to consider the issue of school closures in relation to the community transmission of COVID-19.

The Committee’s advice is that pre-emptive school closures are not likely to be proportionate or effective as a public health intervention to prevent community transmission of COVID-19 at this time.

As Victoria’s Chief Health Officer and as a member of the AHPPC, I fully endorse this advice in relation to schools in Victoria.

There is currently limited information on the contribution of children to transmission of COVID-19. The WHO-China Joint Mission noted the primary role of household transmission and observed that children tended to be infected from adults.

Previous work suggests that the potential reduction in community transmission from pre-emptive school closures may be offset by the care arrangements that are in place for children who are not at school.

There is a particular risk associated with the fact that children may require care from vulnerable grandparents or may continue to associate (and transmit infection) outside of school settings.

Broadly, the health advice on school closures from previous respiratory epidemics shows the health costs are often underestimated and the benefits are overestimated.

This may be even more so in relation to COVID-19 as unlike influenza, the impact on otherwise healthy children has been minimal to date.

For pre-emptive school closures to be effective, prolonged closure is required and it would be unclear when they could be re-opened. If there were still a large pool of susceptible students when schools are re-opened, there would be likely to be re-emergence of transmission in the community.

School closures may still be considered late in the outbreak in anticipation of a peak in infection rates, for a shorter period of time. Short term reactive school closures may also be warranted to allow cleaning and contact tracing to occur.

Should evidence change in relation to school closures then my advice to the sector, in collaboration with AHPPC, would of course change also.

Schools will be closed down soon, as cases in the UK are now being found in schools.

Their yearly conference is scheduled for July, the one last week was a women's conference.

Maybe they didn't cover it on BBC World though and you missed it.

Nope - 5G will be the 'go-to' technology. 

A bit expensive now but it won't matter if one's employer pays the cost.  Will be much cheaper to the employer than providing full scale office facilities.

Isnt 5g constrained by full network load, whereas fibre has an almost infinite speed potential with hardware scaling up? Im no techy, but thats what ive heard when 5g is brought up, often by conservatives to explain away the fibre to copper node mess that the LNP has forced on (most of) the country.

My original comment was in the context of how the CV-19 will change employment/work places and it may take a decade for it all to happen.  

I'm not a techie either.  But I can see a situation where 5G (or its future replacements) is offered for 'work-from-home' clients via their employer subscription, not necessarily offering 5G for the whole population who stay on NBN or its future equivalent.  Also, 'work-from-home' folk won't be using the service non-stop all day and very little at night.  A far out idea is maybe for employers to pay for fibre to homes for those who will work from home.

Whatever the technology I feel the workplace for many people won't be the same again.  Not sure if this is good or bad...

It not a scam but there is a cure, this virus is not new, it's the 19th strain of corona virus, people like bill gates warned in 2015 that the world would be facing a strain of corona virus that would go out of control, a vaccine could have been developed year ago that could be tweaked when new strains mutated, the world health organisation did very little work on it. The  Anti=vacc have a lot to be ashamed of at the moment. There is a cure, but the normal protocols about testing medicines have to be dropped,  this is an emergency and they need to be  sped up, otherwise there won't be any money in the health care system to pick up the pieces.

Fibre is the way for domestic use for the next few years at least. 5G has a role but it will be in the internet of things and is really only for densely populated cities at least in the short term.

The NBN has been a complete stuff up for so many reasons.
