The biggest disappointments right now are Hannan and Petty not making any progress up from TBC with groin injuries.

And the Joel Smith mystery.

Hoping it's not osteitis pubis for those two.

Hasn’t Salem been diagnosed with something similar before? I thought it was a long term thyroid issue he has to manage which is controlled via medication.... Not sure if there is a link to glandular or not but it derailed him for a significant period from memory

I reckon he’s had glandular fever at least once before, maybe twice.

FFS what happened to getting weekly injury reports? We legit have to rely on AFL.com to give us an update because our own media team is too busy clogging up with AFLW crap such as "Libby Birch puppy debut".

Petty and Hannan? What on earth is happening to them??

Not sure the video editing team are the same ones who do the medical assessments mate.

Weideman ankle should be fine

Bennell light calf strain (that's two now and he hasn't started match sim or matches for points)

Salem recovering and good for round 1 (I prefer he takes a little longer to recover and comes back via VFL to avoid relapse other issues)

AVB different injury to original one (l'm still very concerned)

It's a viral disease so I'm pretty sure you can only contract glandular fever once after which you get lifelong immunity.

According to the NHS (UK): "Once you have had glandular fever, it is unlikely you will develop it again. This is because people develop lifelong immunity after the initial infection."

Yeah fair enough... maybe i got it confused with all his thyroid issues.

There's something NQR about this article. It sounds like they haven't actually got the information from the horses mouth (the club).

There's this line:

"The club was contacted for an update on Wednesday."  ------------ usually the line written by a news agency when a subject is contacted for a comment but no answer was given or they declined to answer or couldn't be contacted. Obviously the article doesn't state if they received a response but but it's certainly implied that there was no verification for any of my stated reasons.

This was followed by "In other injury news, the club confirmed earlier in the day that Harley Bennell has suffered another low-grade calf strain." ------------ By saying "the club confirmed earlier in the day" it validates my theory that the club was contacted later in the day by AFL.com.au about Vanders and co but they received no response.

Therefore I believe that the AFL.com.au article is not based on actual information from the Melbourne Football Club.

Why the silence from the MFC?

And why the article based on little or no facts from the AFL?

Christian Salem had a debilitating thyroid problem which kept him out of the game for a period.

We need Salem - even if he is at 80%

His kicking at Optus, given how big it is, would be sorely missed if he doesn't get up for it.

This is posted just now on afl.com.au  There hasn't been anything from the Club for a while.  For some reason Joel Smith hasn't been even listed on the injury list for weeks. Wonder what the story is and why he's never even listed.

PLAYER INJURY ESTIMATED RETURN
 Harley Bennell  Calf  TBC
 Kade Chandler  Wrist  1 week
 Kyle Dunkley  Foot  Test
 Mitch Hannan  Groin  TBC
 Kade Kolodjashnij  Concussion  TBC
 Harry Petty  Groin  TBC
 Braydon Preuss  Knee  3-5 weeks
 Christian Salem  Glandular fever  Test
 Aaron vandenBerg  Foot  TBC
Updated: Tuesday, March 17

Early prognosis

The club has been optimistic Salem will be available for round one but a recent bout of glandular fever has him in doubt. Sam Weideman should be available after rolling his ankle in the second Marsh Community Series game. Max Gawn and Steven May have declared themselves starters after pre-season knee injuries. The long game continues for Bennell after another calf strain while Joel Smith has had an interrupted summer and mystery surrounds what's been troubling him following an infected foot over the New Year period. - Jennifer Phelan

Need Salem out there.

Will be a bit of a loss on OS. His kick is much needed to set up play and be a link.

I wonder whether his lowered immune system that the club would take an ultra cautious approach to him to shield him from the coronavirus.

He's up there as one of my favourite players and really is one of the few that has that 6th sense for just knowing where to put it.

Kyle Dunkley

Heel | Available

Kyle Dunkley has been on a restricted program in recent weeks due to some heel soreness, but he is back training with the main group and available for selection.

Sam Weideman

Ankle | Available

Sam Weideman rolled his ankle against the Hawks in Launceston, and while he has been on a managing his training over the past two weeks, he also looks to be fit for Round 1.

Nathan Jones

Achilles | Test

Nathan Jones will have to prove his fitness before Melbourne’s trip to Perth after experiencing some soreness in his Achilles after the second Marsh Series match of the pre-season.

Braydon Preuss

Knee | Test

After tearing his meniscus in February, Braydon Preuss has made a very quick recovery.

The ruckman’s knee is back to full strength, allowing him to compete freely at training and he could be ready to go this weekend.

Joel Smith

Quad | Test

Joel Smith suffered a minor setback in the lead up to the Marsh Series, injuring his quad at training.

While he wasn’t able to play a practice match, he has returned to the main group and looks likely to put up his hand for selection.

Mitch Hannan

Groin | 6 weeks

Mitch Hannan was hindered by some groin issues last year and has faced more challenges this pre-season.

He is still in the rehab group but looking to increase his workload in the coming weeks.

Harry Petty

Groin | 6 weeks

Similarly to Hannan, Harry Petty has been restricted over the summer with a groin issue and is still up to six weeks away from a return.

Aaron vandenBerg

Foot | 3 months

Aaron vandenBerg’s misfortune has continued, with the 28-year-old expected to be sidelined for up to three months with a broken foot.

The hard-at-it Demon, who has played just seven games in the past three seasons due to an on-going foot injury, did the damage in Melbourne’s last pre-season hit-out against Hawthorn.

vandenBerg’s injury came in unlucky fashion, with the midfielder simply kicking the shin of an opponent in Launceston.

Fortunately, the injury has no relation to the foot trouble he has had in the past, with the hopes that he will be back to full fitness after his stint in rehab.

Kade Chandler

Finger | TBC

After breaking his wrist earlier in the pre-season, Kade Chandler unfortunately went down once again at training on Monday.

Chandler suffered a broken finger at Casey Fields, leaving him to assess his options in the coming days.

Harley Bennell

Calf | Indefinite

Harley Bennell pulled up sore after a training session last week and scans showed he had a low-grade strain in his calf.

While it is disappointing for the Demons’ rookie to face another minor setback, there is no rush in getting him back to full fitness, with a long-term plan in place.

Kade Kolodjashnij

Head | Indefinite

Kade Kolodjashnij’s ongoing battle with concussion has been well documented, and the club is looking to take a cautious approach with his recovery.

Aaron Nietschke

Knee | Season

Towards the end of 2019, Aaron Nietschke went down with his second ACL injury in under 12 months, ruling him out for the entire season.
