Hopefully Jones gets up for round 1. First I've heard of this and praying it's minor.

Great to hear Joel Smith back training with the main group too.

Hannan can take his time, we have an array of small forwards now in Milkman, Fritsch, Kozzy,  Spargo and Bedford so I'd rather us be really patient with him and let him recover to full health.

This is actually a pretty solid outcome.

I'm absolutely gutted for AvB, the fact it's a broken foot but not even related to his previous recurring problems just makes you wonder what he has to do?

Does Jones account for 280 or so of our games tally, out of 361?

The whole injuries and being on the fringes of the best 22 changes dramatically this year.  No longer can you impress selectors with repeated bogs  on the frozen tundras of Casey fields, nor can you ease back from a long term injury getting match fitness into the legs whilst battling the hurricanes down there.

Makes the selectors job all the more difficult,  probably means training intensity will be consistently high as players try and out train their selection rivals.

I suppose the whole team could be said to be 4-6 these days.

Fingers crossed for no home basketball injuries or the like.

I think only Bennell, Vandenburg, KK and Nietschke would be unavailable.  All the rest should be fit (or close to) and ready.

I’d scrap any practice matches. Training should be allowed from perhaps early June.  I’d say a 3 week pre season and then it’s likely a July-October season.  4 months.  No crowds (very very sad).

24 players. 6 on the bench.  16 minutes plus time on.  Finals could be 18 minutes plus time on.

So that looks like only #16 & 27 still injured/missing.

Hmmm Mitch Hannan, was undecided about him until I watched our highlights during this shut down. Has some important moments.

Gees all those B's i was hoping i wasn't going to see from those other Teams this year are going to be fit as well......

He was so off the pace last year in his handful of games, because of injury.

However, round 1 proved we have a very average forward line so his goal kicking nous will be required at some stage this year.

I get the feeling we could go through an iceage for a millennium, then on return see Van den burg - progressing well.

You're suggesting that getting him back to full health is a mammoth task?

** Opportunity lost!**. “Mammoth tusk” for full points!

I’m afraid Vdberger may be added to the long list of Dees whose career was destroyed by injury. ?

He's already on the list whether he fully recovers from this latest injury or not. I have my fingers and toes crossed for him.

Will be interesting to see how those recovering go when they return back, I'm sure they've done mountains of work to get back to health but getting minutes into them in match simulation will be key to see if they can handle return to matches.

will be interesting if when list numbers are cut for next year clubs are allowed to pay out contracted players in a manner that does not impact the salary cap.

Seems sensible save that it would let Sydney out of the Buddy clause

interesting to read that bennell is training with the 'second' mid group, of which jones is a part

from the looks of the happy snaps, first mid group is gawn, oliver, viney, brayshaw, petracca, and tomlinson

presumably one other as i think they're training in groups of seven?

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
