Hibberd’s output was reduced in 2019 compared to his past standards due in part to the fact that he had to work in a defensive unit that was constantly undermanned through injury. The club will be looking for better things from the defender as he approaches his twilight years.

Hibbo is another player whose 2019 form I can’t work out. Was it as a result of the team’s poor form and the fact that the back line was injury riddled and never settled or is he in the twilight of his career and he just can’t cut the mustard anymore. I guess we’ll see.

Pig definitely had a disappointing year. Let’s hope he can bounce back to that All-Australian form.

The revolving door backline certainly did not assist him.

Cooked.

Will bow out Bernie Vince/Jordan Lewis style. Play a few games in the seniors then finish off at Casey.

Father time is tapping him on the shoulder, which is the main reason I find the Frost Trade rather strange going into 2020

The gameplan adopted by Goodwin does not favour aging players no matter what their skill level may be.

The only positive is that the form drop off in 2019 was so precipitous that it may have been one of those aberrations we talk about.

Not sure we have the players to cover him and could explain why we kept Josh Wagner on the list.

PS: these reviews would be fascinating if the players performance could also be correlated with Joeboy's great weekly player commentary and of course our own Demonland rankings. For instance did Hibberd ever feature in our top 6 players in any match etc.

You'd have to do a search of the individual weeks and the individual posts within to get the answer. We randomly take 3 posters votes each week for the official count.

Here is the list at the end of 2019. Hibberd came 16th but only amassed 24 votes. A player can get a maximum of 18 votes a round.

Many thanks Andy.

Over the years I have found that for a lesser team such as ours you get more insight from this forum than you could possibly hope for from either the mass media or the club itself.

Such a wonderful resource.

That vote tells me that on more than one occasion we thought him in our top 6 at least so the season was not a complete loss for Hibberd.

I think he is gone. Lost a couple of yards of pace. His efforts this year weren't from a lack of trying though.

We need a contingency plan for both Hibberd and Nev.

I like the bloke but he had an appalling season. Almost embarrassing to watch at times. Unfortunately has become a real plodder that throws his head around to demonstrate desperation.
I hope for his and the clubs sake he can turn it around but I highly doubt it.

Yes dee-tox

The end for these two will come very quickly in the early part of next season

The club hopefully has planned for it by keeping C minus players like the Wagner. Who can replace Nev?? I cant see anybody yet>

He is finished, and has been arguably since late 2018. Unfortunately we have zero cover in that position, so he will continue to get games in 2020.

Rankings in the top 6 against all MFC players based on composite weighted averages....

5th - Rnd 7 vs the Hawks (3.475)

5th - Rnd 18 vs Meth Coke (4.475)

5th - Rnd 20 vs the Tigers (3.775)

Played a few lock down roles later in the season and obviously restricted and out for a while with the collarbone.

I think he has at least this year left to produce something similar to 2018 in terms of consistency (assuming a full pre season under his belt) but will also need to clean up the disposal side.

He is ranked No.2 out of all defenders for effective disposals (11.16) just behind Hore (11.46), but like Hore he is a turnover king ...ranked No.1 here from all defenders that will remain in 2020 (4.32 per match), Hore @ No.3 (4.15) and if we include Salem (albeit he isn't a dedicated defender and copping more heat around the contest probably sees a higher 'expected' rate) ... 2nd (4.20).

Out of interest Frosty was ranked 5th from all dedicated defenders on turnovers with 2.76 per match.

Realistically, it will be Jetta and Hibbo that are holding out Hore from that lockdown small defender position, which going into next year may see one of them out of the side. Yes he may have lost some horses out of the mustang engine, however no one can seriously question his effort or workrate. I don't think he'll ever be as good as that 2017 AA year, however hopefully he can adjust himself to being a bit slower and working more on his defensive side of the game and return to the consistency of 2018. He's one that I really don't want taking the ball out of D50, so turning him more into that Jetta role would be a much better idea imo.

Gone from averaging 27 touches in his 2017 AA year to 17 in 2019.

A player going backwards at an alarming rate.

May see time at Casey if he doesn’t lift next year.

Hibberd was outstanding against Hawthorn and then the following week against GC before he busted his shoulder.

Aside from that week and a half, I doubt Hibberd player 1 decent game.

With Frost ranked 8th, it makes the decision to offload him for peanuts even more idiotic (despite the Club’s spin).?

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
