Jack Newnes

It is a bit surprising given he would probably be cheaper than Tomlinson....

I guess Alan Richardson would be able to give us the inside word on Jack.

Sounds as though Richardson lost a bit of faith in him.  Doesn't bode well for a chance at Melbourne.

Every single Saints fan lost faith in him a long time before Richo did. Gave him way too many chances.

Could be a good player again if he finds some hardness and speed but otherwise just a list clogger

May as well repost this article that came out after 10 or so rounds this year.

https://www.zerohanger.com/best-and-worst-kicks-inside-50-unveiled-29660/

Best Kicks Inside 50

1. Dayne Zorko (Brisbane Lions): 43 kicks — 55.8 per cent retention rate

2. Jack Gunston (Hawthorn): 27 kicks — 55.6 per cent retention rate

3. Jack Newnes (St Kilda): 29 kicks — 48.3 per cent retention rate

4. Bradley Hill (Fremantle): 27 kicks — 48.1 per cent retention rate

5. Scott Pendlebury (Collingwood): 46 kicks — 47.8 per cent retention rate

Worst Kicks Inside 50

1. Clayton Oliver (Melbourne): 45 kicks — 8.9 per cent retention rate

2. Rory Sloane (Adelaide): 31 kicks — 12.9 per cent retention rate

3. Ed Langdon (Fremantle): 30 kicks — 16.7 per cent retention rate

4. Hugh McCluggage (Brisbane Lions): 34 kicks — 17.6 per cent retention rate

5. Travis Boak (Port Adelaide): 38 kicks — 18.4 per cent retention rate

Of course the catch is he's averaged 16 and 15 pos the past 2 years, but 22-23 back in 2014-2017. So you'd hope that he's seeking to refresh his career, rather than just do a deal for 3 years and fade into retirement.

The article said that, but playing 123 games in a row up until round 15 this year seems to point to the opposite - A lot of faith. Wasn't Richo sacked around that time as well?

Posted a while back that we should look at Newnes as a free agent and still think we should. Again, he’d be an upgrade on players we’ve already delisted and ones who are still on the list.

A Saints mate of mine reckons he's been played out of position the last couple of years and his form has suffered as a result. Might be worth kicking the tyres to see if he fills a need.

What does he believe his best position is?

I think - to be honest wasn't paying much attention - he has been played off half back whereas my Saint mate reckons he's better as a high half forward delivering inside 50.

But I may have that 180 degrees wrong

You are spot on, high half forward rotating through the wing. Very underrated player with great speed, decision making, goal sense and crumbs with the best of then.

Sounds like someone we could use. If he's a better version of say Mitch Hannan then he improves us. I'll leave you to make the arrangements @BigMacjnr

He's fairly slippery and a good user.  Seems to me to be an unrealised talent.

I'm surprised there's not more chatter about him as a free agent option. He'd be upgraded depth at worst, or an upgraded wing/half back at best. Definitely worth pursuing as a free agent as long as his wage demands weren't high.

The lack of public discussion must come down to his asking price surely?

I thought Richo might push for Dees to look at Newnes.  He seemed to be a good running type with excellent foot skills.  Maybe not quite enough of the footy for a midfield role.

I didn’t see enough of the Saints though to view as a definite yes or no. Others view?

Could we still offer (screw over the Saints) and offer to take as pick 2 in preseason draft?

He’s a free agent.

Didn’t free agency end today.  ??

Saints have an offer that we can beat. Tell Newnes not to go to draft but we’ll pick in psd. I just want to see the Saints get nutted.

If Murray doesn’t get picked up this week does he fall through to the PSD? If that’s the case, I’d rather take Murray, much more upside. And if we were interested in Newnes we would have chased him during the free agency period (which I think we should have).

AFL article explained that Newnes can refuse a contract with St Kilda and could become a delisted free agent.
should be able to bring in cheaply either way

Big risk with knocking back a contract unless you’re 100% certain you’re going to be picked up. Things can change at the last minute.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Sunday’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
