Yep, nothing ‘lil’ about it.

From that article:

"The A-sample didn’t return any evidence of a banned substance in Rioli’s system, but the finding was that there was evidence of urine substitution, which is known as a “prohibited method”

If it wasn't a complete substitution this makes it even stranger.

The whole episode has so much “dumbness” attached to it it’s hard to grasp.  If there was any evidence of a banned substance surely he would have been suspended earlier than this. As an alternative scenario, was there any chance he was just trying to be funny and tampering with the sample as a joke?

Would it be fair to call it a "wee mistake"?

Are you suggesting that the AFL tipped-off ASADA about needing to do the collection on a Tuesday?

Think you are misunderstanding what I wrote - what other people are questioning is how it (the tampering) could've happened given it was in front of a collector.

No; historical reference to the previous saga.

I wonder what he was trying to hide, it wasn’t game day so they don’t test for cocaine and weed.

It seems he didn't know the rules clearly and confused (panic or ignorance) ASADA and AFL testing and what they test for depending on when they take a sample.

There were no PED's found in his subsequent and uncontaminated sample.  So, even if he had an AFL 'strike' there was no need to mess with his sample as ASADA wouldn't act or maybe not even test for illicit drugs.

Makes one wonder how clearly players understand the testing regimes of the two bodies.

If it was one of our young stars panicked or confused at a drug test and similar happened, I would be mortified for him and us.

Still, no excuse for being so dumb as to tamper with the sample.

Worst. Joke. Ever!

The thing I come back to in all of these cases is where are the player managers?! Where is their duty of care to the players who pay them?

Maybe they do this but I’d have my players run through the rules relating to this every 6 months just so they are 100% clear. As I said maybe they do something similar already but they seem miss out on being brought up in these cases.

So the kid tampered with a sample that was not contaminated? Who teaches these boys

According to Richard Ings who i heard on radio yesterday, it is still a very serious offence that could get him 4 years

Although he was caught in the act, the official obtaining the sample doesn’t and isn’t authorised to do anything there or then. He takes the sample and reports on his observations where an investigation is then commenced. Hence the delay.

Yep. The official just writes a full report on the events. Which certainly would not read well back at HQ

Interesting take on 774AM this afternoon. They were asking if it was WADA or ASADA taking the sample.  Apparently WADA are strict and turn up unannounced and literally follow behind the player until the sample is produced in full view of official. Shorts to ankle, top lifted up to chest height. 774AM said ASADA sub out to Dorritich pathology and they are a bit more relaxed about it. ASADA supposedly only test for PED whereas WADA test for illicit drugs as well. They questioned on the radio if Willy had 2 strikes already and knew he had something in his system, hence the panic, attempted substitution and getting caught red handed, despite the sample coming back neg for PEDs

While we’re on the topic, why on earth should they ever test for weed? Silly stuff

The WADA Prohibited List is the international standard for identifying substances and methods prohibited in sport. The List is updated annually and a substance will be considered for the List if it meets any two of the following three criteria:

1. It has the potential to enhance or enhances sport performance.

2. It represents an actual or potential health risk to the athlete.

3. It violates the spirit of sport.

Why might marijuana and cannabinoids meet this criteria?

Performance-enhancement: A common perception of marijuana is that its use impairs physical activity, including exercise performance. While the effects of marijuana can decrease hand-eye coordination and distort spatial perception, there are other effects that can be performance enhancing for some athletes and sport disciplines. Cannabis can cause muscle relaxation and reduce pain during post-workout recovery. It can also decrease anxiety and tension, resulting in better sport performance under pressure. In addition, cannabis can increase focus and risk-taking behaviors, allowing athletes to forget bad falls or previous trauma in sport, and push themselves past those fears in competition.[1]

Actual or potential health risk: A number of studies show that marijuana use may cause a variety of health risks. These risks include negative effects on respiratory, cardiac, and mental health. Frequent marijuana smokers can experience respiratory problems including more frequent acute chest illness and a heightened risk of lung infections. Marijuana use raises the heart rate by 20-100 percent shortly after smoking which can increase the risk of heart attack. Chronic marijuana use has also been linked to mental illness including paranoia and psychosis.[2]

Violation of the spirit of sport: Negative values and ethics included in sport, and beyond sport, are considered in this criteria. Due to the illegal nature of marijuana in most countries, the use or abuse of marijuana does not exhibit the ethics and moral judgment that upholds the spirit of sport.[1]

Someone mind summarising this for me?

Sugar is bad for you too. Maybe we should start testing for that. And women, wouldn’t want the players to get distracted and hurt themselves.

What if it were legally prescribed?

Sugar won't effect your sporting performance (good or bad) for any individual game. Weed will.

But I guess you didn't want to accept that, hence your user name

Heard today that he had tried to pee for 4 hours... but no luck and decided out of frustration to poor his energy drink into the sample cup!!!  Obviously he has a super bladder, but why didn't he start drinking water after a few hours to get things moving.

Basically he's screwed.

Bulltish, the West Coast brand protection machine was on the front foot very early, using their ex players working in the media to push the unfortunate mistake story.

It rolled into reports in the West Australian flowing on to other media outlets rewriting the same story.

Yes he's not in the circle or still on the payroll Rjay

Tamper with sample, get 4 years. Simple. The rest is spin. Rioli is not the victim, he knew better.

Hope ASADA and/or WADA don't back down

The sad thing is, this would be funny if it weren't so serious. All the rumours that have come out in the wake of it sound like a poorly made comedy movie about a sports star. But, he knew what he was doing, and will have to face the consequences. As far as I'm concerned a big ban is in order.

Why didn't he drink the drink instead of putting it in the cup? Matthew Lloyd said last night on FC when he was 16 he had to do a sample, the testers were there at 6 and he couldn't provide a sample until 10. I guess Rioli just got impatient and frustrated. Unfortunately now the rumour mill goes into overdrive.

Not being a game-day test they were only testing for PED’s and not prohibited drugs. I think it’s pretty clear what has happened.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
