If JT' is consistent in his mantra of drafting best available, then Weightman @ pick 8 will not occur.

Didn't they specifically say they're looking for a small forward in the draft? Hopefully if that's the case they split 8, not 3.

Like RustyNails, I've downloaded the NAB League App to watch this kid.The highlights are from his Dandenong Stingrays games only.

He doesn't look like the small forward you would spend pick 8 on. He looks like a really solid player and if we still had pick 21 or 26 i'm sure we would be hoping he was still there.

I really expected from media reports and trade radio that he was a cunning goal sneak like Davey, Barlett or Milne. That isn't what the highlights showed at all unfortunately.

He looks like a medium half forward who just happens to be short.

I really want to see the highlights from his Vic Country games as I know this is where he kicked 8 in two games and this could change my mind.

I’m not convinced by Weightman at all. The way they talk about him being able to jump high reminds me of Neville Jetta going up for screamers in the backline only for the opposition to mop up uncontested.

Yep. I don't want my small forwards to be flying for marks. I want them staying on the ground waiting for the crumbs.

I don't recall Jetta ever flying for marks though.

You probably couldn’t see him as he was surrounded by 4 other demon players all flying for the same mark.

Yes i agree.  He'll be gone by 97 or whatever it is.  Unless we can somehow split the pick and still be g'teed of landing Young with the first.  That might give us 6, 8 and something in the 20s/30s that's more appropriate.

I've been wondering if we might use pick 8 in the live trading. Use 3 on Young then wait, come pick 8 if our 2nd target is available (say Flanders or Serong) we take them if not then we try to do a pick swap with a Geelong or GC. 14 and 17 or 15 and 20 respectively for 8 then we might be able to hedge our bets and grab both Wightman and Pickett.

Another one? To go with ANB, Lockhart, Spargo, Chandler, Sparrow, Bedford, the Wagners, Dunkley, how many do we need on the list?

I think they meant a good small forward.

Still, it will be a bluff. Not sure we'd openly talk draft strategy on the MFC website. We'll take best available.

Think you're right.

If the FD wants to increase our options, they might split either 3 or 8, then take best available with the split picks.

I'd be happy with 3 and 8 though.

Gee, Osilik doesn't rate Weightman. Maybe I should get on the Weightman train.

Where did all this Weightman business come from?

Tom Brown reported a month ago that the Saints were into Cody at five, and also us at two, which seemed kinda crazy.

Then we took a punt of Eliot, who as an affordable free agent of that caliber you would take regardless of needs.

Then we moved on pick 8, which made sense considering it cost us 26 and a likely 15ish in a supposedly crap draft.

Was the rest just two and two equals five for a small forward, led by Twomey and then widely followed in the media?

These are the quotes that I can find attributed to Mahoney, interpreted by various agencies in completely opposite ways.

"Part of our strategy during this Trade Period was to improve our draft position by using our future picks... Next year’s draft will have a high number of talented Academy players, and we value another top selection in this draft."

Achieved, and widely acknowledged as a factor to consider. But with respect to missing out on Jamie Eliot;.

"It's an area we want to look to address – that small, crumbing forward – and there might be some players on our list who can play that role... In 2018, we were the No.1 scoring team. It didn't work this year for a number of different reasons but we think there's still enough power there to kick winning scores."

These words don't remotely add up to our supposed interest in searching for a small forward in the draft at all.

Have I missed something from a SEN interview or somewhere - or is all the Weightman talk just random speculation?

He did say that small forwards were not something we were looking to trade for but we would likely look to bring in that type through the draft.

He didn’t say when, but we only have 3, 8 and 97 at the moment.

Can you kindly point me to where he said it Axis? Was it on the radio? I just cant find anywhere in print where he's used those words - only journos interpreting the other line to mean an area we want to address . . . at the draft.

Yeah I heard him say that too. It was on Trade Radio

Obviously the theme for us during the draft will be small forwards and outside players.

When was the last time Melbourne didn't need outside run?  Surely this should have been a theme in the past 3-4 years.

All I recall was that as soon as we traded to pick 8 there were journalists linking us with Weightman straightaway. It wasn't that we were after a small forward, It was implied that we traded to pick 8 especially to pick this particular player.

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
