My post was saying that Hawthorn made a mistake in cutting Hodge.

It was in response to a poster saying we should do what Hawthorn did.  Hawthorn acted in haste.

Youre not getting  my gist.

Jones is no Hodge...not by a Flemington Straight.

Hes been a workmanlike bloke. Its all very well to be charitable. .but surely there's  a difference  between  a burb footy hero getting his gong and an AFL team applying professional  assessment and all thatgoes along with that.

In reality we are no better than a dysfunctional  suburban  team and run things like it.

Hawthorn  made the right call. Its thatt hey let these blokes go and still rebuild on the fly is the very point.

We attempt  rebuild after rebuild  after rebuild and NEVER get there.

Hawthorn  gets it

Hawthorn hasn’t won a final in four years.  The players they’ve brought in are nowhere near the talent that has left.  Those that are comparable, are injury prone.

They were immense from 2007-15, but their rebuild is a myth and nothing to aspire to.

Jones is playing one more year.  This is exactly what the club did with Vince in 2018 and Lewis in 2019.  There’s no shock or surprise here.

Hodge Lewis and Mitchell were traded out at the perfect time

Younger players were bought in and now have experience

Whorethorn will be challenging again next year and beyond

They know how to do it. Norm Smith past on his information 6 decades ago

Curcumstances dictate.  If he wasn't Co Captain in such a flop of a season i would fully agree Mydee.

Need to choose words a little more carefully if for nothing more than a club PR assist in what might be a very tricky off season trying to sell hope to existing and potential members/supporters.  If you aren't going to bother then probably best to say stuff all.

Nathan Jones will become one of our  greats of the MFC and barring any injuries  will hold his own to 300 plus games in 2020.

Could end up with the most games played. He had a fair season and is still capable. Looking forward to him showing that he has something to offer the club next season. Nathan deserved  a  contract  and his experience and professionalism is of value.

Well done Jonesy.

Nathan Jones is a Melbourne man and loyal he is is good enough to go again  and has the toughness to do so. He was there for the hard times and can hold his head high. He might not reach the heights when he was at his best but will give his blood sweat and tears for our great club. That is the kind of person you want next to you in the trenches.  He is good enough to go again.

Jones in the trenches? The epitome of losers mentality. The record speaks for itself. In all our last quarter capitulations this season he’s the first to go MIA.

The right decision. Well done to Jonesy and the club.

Agree. One more year.  Jonesy should get to 300 and play some good footy. Probably that should just about be the final curtain. Great player. Great heart.  Served the club as a honest warrior. 5-year club captain.  Triple B&F Winner

Suns could then be the home for 2021.

Congrats to Jones on resigning. Very happy with the outcome but Jones has to change his game or he will end up like Vince and Lewis before him. Hopefully he can beat Neita's record.

Would he be offered another season if we had been playing finals and/or been half decent over the past 12 years? Probably not.

Let's be honest, this is legacy pay for sticking through grim times. Love the bloke, but he's depth at most from here out. If he's top 22, then we have problems.

We have problems for the fact he's been re-signed at all.

It just wouldn't happen at a club with solid experienced players. We have a dearth of experience, so I can understand the decision, but as I've said, would have preferred Lewis to stay instead of Jones, but let's hope Nathan can play in another final.

And this is the Myth that is Melbourne

We are all about back story but have amateur hour pantomime as the show.

I really have nothing but admiration  for someone  who gets 300. What perplexes me is how few can differentiate between the ability for this to transpire...and ability full stop.

If we we were a halfway decent list, halfway capably coached , halfway to a decent team Jones simply wouldn't  get a look in.

He's  doing a version of a Bradbury.

He gets a gig because  we're  rubbish atm.

It'll look good in the footy record though..."Winning "

But isn't this exactly the point?? Say we delist him, aside from the ugly look it would be, who replaces him on the list? Pick 78 in the draft. I'm sure whoever he is he'll be as reliable depth as Jones.

Chunk might play 2 games next year or he might play 22 I don't know. But I can guarantee  that at his age he has more to offer than late draft pick. So we keep him.

Call me a blind optimist but I think without the burden of leadership next year Jonesy will be back into some decent form. If the club really believes the time is now for us to challenge in finals and ultimately the premiership (which they have from recent trading etc.), then I completely agree with re-signing Jones. Will have to work his [censored] off for his spot like Lewis did, but I reckon there’s a spot for him somewhere in the forward line. Is a pretty decent kick at goal and wont be having to run as far in a midfielders role.

It’s been difficult watching him this year and I’ve knocked him pretty hard for his lack of leadership as well, but the man is a true champion and always says it like it is. Deserves to make all the success in the world and I’m happy that we’ve backed him in for that opportunity.

Your a blind optimist!!

Glad that Jones has another year.  Hope it motivates him to get fit and consistently play well enough to make 300.

I hope he has the selflessness to step down as co-captain, as others have:  Boake, Murphy (and Prendlebury has signaled the same).  I'm sure he likes the privileges of co-captaincy but time to hand it over.  Hope he relinquishes it without a fuss.

Typical, not surprised at all, Hawthorn move on Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell, Roughead, and we cling to the turnover merchant, it will finish badly of course, it always does at the MFC.

I was too wary of posting on this decision for obvious reasons but you have covered my view well.

Very disappointed in the club not having a sensible and compassionate discussion with Nathan to guide him to a worthy and respectful retirement. (they may have tried though - who knows)

Now we could have a car crash for him next year. I don't buy the earning the extension on leadership given our woeful performances under him at key moments in the recent past - Final round 2017 is the highlight in this regard and round 1 this year.

Will be partly mitigated by skipper change.

Its interesting the PR made no mention of the captaincy.  It seems odd because a contract would include the club, sponsor, media responsibilities and income that go with the role.

It suggests that:

1) Jones will not relinquish the captaincy.

2) He will relinquish the captaincy and it will be announced at a later date.

Leadership positions are usually announced at the end of the pre-season, in February/March.  imv, if there is to be a change in captaincy the sooner the announcement the better:  to work with coaches to learn the game plan, help ensure players follow it; enforce the right behaviours, develop relationships with players without stepping on toes of an existing captain, media work, sponsor advertising, membership advertising etc etc.

Quietly hoping 2) applies and any changes are announced at the B&F (especially if it involves Max and he wins the B&F) or when players return in November.  The B&F is also a good time to pay tribute to Jones' captaincy.

Need to respect leaders in particular a club with zero success & whilst people compare how hawks tapped their veterans etc they all won 4 flags & part of a strong culture of success. We have neither & Jones had given his all with 3 b&f & cant ask for anymore! could have easily changed clubs. Not advocating gifting games but I’m sure he will earn his spot!

Disagree, but i know i won’t change your mind. Jones spends a lot of time just jogging around. So i think he is part of the “Loser” culture.

What sort of example to the young kids will his final Quarter in Round 23 be?

Should have been tapped on the shoulder after the 2017 Season

Not just round 23. He has been missing in most of all the last quarters this season.

Correct. I was being nice.

Next year if he is played anywhere near the midfield, we will know that this club is not the real deal.

But in Round 23 his disposal led to us losing the game. Kicking to the centre of the ground is always not on in that situation. WTF has he learnt in 14 seasons?

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
