Looks like Richo basically locked to join us next year. a terrific footy person, great culturally and first and foremost a developer and a calm head for Goody.

First domino to fall in what i hope is positive changes for the footy club.

Imagine if we were to add Roughead as well.

Be good to have him on board for the end of season review, no point it being done with just the old coaches. Come Sunday it should be thanks McCartney, Jennings and MIssion (plus whoever else is going), then Monday welcome Richo, Burgess and whoever else is coming on board (provided they aren't still involved in finals).

Melbourne close to signing Alan Richardson in key coaching role

"Melbourne has ramped up its bid to win the services of former St Kilda coach Alan Richardson.

The Demons are in the final stages of negotiations with Richardson about a key coaching role for next season.

Football manager Josh Mahoney has led the Dees’ chase for Richardson and is on the verge of landing his signature."

Any chance you can paste the whole article? Paywall unfortunately.

I wondered if that was us, but confused by the header which noted  big melbourne club close to signing him.

If this is true then it is good news.

Not legally allowed to unfortunately. It doesn't really say any more than that other than how he's rated as a good development coach so would suit us.

Will be relieved if it is as a development coach.

I see no success in his AFL coaching career spanning 15 years for him to be given other roles.

Just gut feel, but would think he comes in to fulfill McCartney's original role.

Macca came in as development coach and mentor to Goodwin.  Richardson seems a really honest, hardworking bloke but I just don't see that he has the credentials for the coach mentor part:

  • He hasn't shown he can build a successful game plan.
  • The saints list management was poor in his tenure.
  • Doesn't have coaching finals experience and then a long time ago
  • Hasn't been at a 'successful' club
  • Hasn't had any non-coaching football roles.

With that background I just don't see how he could guide Goodwin thru those areas and in particular help him avoid the pitfalls he fell into in the off-season.

If we have a coach mentor/director role we need someone who has had some success, imv

Yeah for sure, but the impression I got is it's based more on his previous work at Port and Collingwood.

And to be fair, he's not coming in as a strategist or list manager, and has held a senior assistant/coaching director role before.

According to Wikipedia he was at the Pies for one year in 2007 as Development Coach and at Port, again for one year, as Senior Assistant/Coaching Director.

I probably shouldn't comment further until I can see the article and there is an announcement.

Richo (as an assistant) and Hinkley were a good partnership when Port made the finals in 2013 for the first time since 2007.

I've heard countless times that he was a fantastic assistant to Hinkley.

Can totally understand where you're coming from, but as far as is known he's well rated as a football person and is experienced and level headed so it seems a good move to me. If we can add Richo, a great strategist and a proper forwards coach it seems a much better coaching group IMO.

Any chance of getting a Clarkson clone?

Not sure Brisbane would let their coach go.

The bloke that was also a big part of our most successful period in 50 years

I like Richo, but what is he going to do?

he has just been sacked by the Ants for not producing the goods, that his replacement looked to tap into immediately

if we are to employ a mentor, they need success behind their name

Fagan would be great or Ratten

Richo needs mentoring himself.....

I wish we could have Ratten. Not sure what it is but I like him. I thought he was unlucky to get the chop at the Blues.

I thought so too.

I might be wrong here, but I think Richo worked with Bugess at Port as well.

Maybe that relationship may have been a factor?

I'd say Ratten is after the No.1 job.

But I agree with you're post, Ratt on face value seems a good coach as well.

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didn’t just beat Gold Coast — they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #28 Will Verrall

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #29 Tom Campbell

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: #30 Harry Sharp

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lions’ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

Worked his way back after a slow start and a further slump in form going into the midseason but became a solid contributor for the club in the latter half of 2025. Closing in on 300 goals for the club.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Let’s be honest, last week’s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper — second versus seventeenth — football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
