25 yrs old forward. One year to go on contract. Free agent at end of 2020.

AFL website claims clubs believe he may be on the market this year.

Thoughts?

Had a lot of injuries at the Roos and now dropped in the second last game of the season - seems he might be on the way out. Doesn't get a heap of the ball, and his DE% isn't flash either.  I know North supporters had high hopes, but I think with Petracca, Fritsch, Melksham, Hannan and Joel Smith we have his type covered.

He’s played 17 games this season so there’s a chance he’s got his body right, a bit more confidence in his body and consistent games he could come quite good. Given we may not see AVB again, he could be a good replacement.

Has looked to be on the verge of being a good player for a number of years but never seems to get there.

Offer a two year deal.  We have similar types. Big on potential.  Low on injury freedom

Would be a good moneyball type pickup for us.

Would be our second leading goal kicker this year.

While i'm not 100% convinced at this point the bloke has shown that he just might offer some X factor and make a difference up forward, albeit still only in short bursts and a long way off B or A grade.  Not expecting him to be at this point obviously especially given the interruptions with only about 60 games behind him but he is already 26.  A young 26 maybe given the lack of time on the park?

Seems to work hard both ways, quite accurate in front of goal.  Pressures reasonably well inside 50.  Plenty of score involvements, quite good on the ground and average meters gained quite solid as a forward.

Disposal a little off AFL level both handball and kicking at this point.  Turns it over a little too much as a result.  Not a major skew but enough to be a concern.

If he can clean up the last part and with a few more pre-seasons/body growing stronger and some more experience, particularly up forward, he just might become a decent 2nd/3rd stringer medium mobile forward who pushes up the ground quite a bit.

Depth at Casey initially and added pressure for a spot in the 2nd/3rd string medium/tall role up forward might be handy to keep Weid and Melk honest.

Worth considering if available on a reasonably inexpensive package deal.

Wood's manager has come out and said that the club was open to trading him earlier in the year. Has consistently gone around 1.5 goals a game, whilst obviously the biggest knock is his durability, for where we are at the moment it seems like a low risk high reward move. Has been playing more games each year than the last so could be a sign he's got himself right.Could be worth around our 3rd round pick - currently 42 which is coincidentally what he was drafted for, or if North drive a harder bargain, give them what we get in return for Frost.

We're really lacking in key forward depth if one or both of Tmac and Weid go down injured again this season. How are we ever going to keep a season afloat if Tmac goes down and we have Petty + Weid as the 2 key forwards. Even still adding another key forward not even as backup wouldnt be the worst thing in the world. Last year with Hogan, T Smith and Weid in the forward line we looked ominous and really straightened out our entries into forward 50.

Wood is a 3rd tall if that, not a key forward.

I think we proved at the end of the season that Fritsch has that spot covered...then we also have Trac, Hannan and even Melk.

Not a player type that we need I would think.

His Manager seemed pretty clear the only serious discussions he has had so far are with Carltank & the Aints.  Things could change as they sometimes do but sounds like we aren't in the picture at this point.

I've heard that the lack of interest is down to his current contract being quite large.

Well thats probably the biggest concern I’d have with it then. However unsurprising that North are paying seriously overs to meet the salary minimum.

I think he players taller than he actually is and have seen him pants a few quality defenders. I see your point, we definitely need that serious A-grade ke forward option, but they dont grow on trees and certainly arent coming to a club thats finishing 17th.

Wood signed a four-year contract with the Roos in 2016, estimated to be in the range of $450-500,000 a season, which will expire at the end of 2020.Aug 15, 2019

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
