Wow. You guys just don’t get it. Read carefully.....total games unavailable from the WHOLE list have a near to linear relationship to ladder position across a season. It’s NOT my opinion, it’s a stat, a fact, not a theory.

Can we stop using injuries as an excuse or reason.

The players that come in for the injured players SHOULD be able to KICK and HANDBALL to a team mate without turning it over ffs. Also be able to MARK the ball without fumbling.

THIS IS AND HAS BEEN OUR MAIN PROBLEM ALL [censored] SEASON.

ITS PATHETIC for a so called professional footy side.

I urge everyone to listen to Troy Chaplins pre game interview. He looks like he is off to have a casual Sunday latte. What a complete and utter lightweight. No  idea. He was ready for balls to go over the back for easy goals. Did he think Stephen Milne was playing. Get him out of the Club.

IMO easily our worst performance for the season. Last 3 weeks we’ve been in games until the end. Not sure how though last night. Saints scored 85 of 104 points from our turnovers. That’s outrageous.

Hold that thought Hunt as we play the Tigers this week.

Remember MFC never fails to disappoint.

As we only seem to be able to play for three quarters all concerned should receive three quarter payment......not that It would make much difference.

VFL players, wouldn’t get a game in any other top 8 side in the comp.

Top 8 ?? I reckon most would not get a game at GCS!!

I think they will keep Billy on for one more year. Apparently one of the most professional players on our list and coaches love him. Unfortunately the last 2 years he hasn't had a good ran at it due to injuries.

Honestly rather Stretch getting games on a wing then the Wagner's.

I wouldnt have any of these three!!

I have come to the realisation that next year will be no different. For those that say we came in under prepared and had no pre season, how have the druggies been able to turn things around after their issues. We are talking about professional sports people. They are required to play 2hrs of football a week! We have major issues, something that pick 2 ain’t going to do a brass razoo to address. MFC great way to completely snuff any delight my family of five had for this club.

But in a heart-warming reminder of the human side to the game, boundary umpire Dillon Tee proposed to field umpire Eleni Glouftsis in the middle of the MCG.

Yeah and I nearly vomited right there and then!

Totally agree Jones has zero impact just jog around picking up soft kick. Never break a tackle alway falls to ground. Has been a passenger ever since he dropped that soda in the first game. Been a great servent but it time.

I have the feeling we are never going to take the next step with those two as leaders. The disconnect, inconsistency  and confusion on the ground is obvious. Two lesser half captains do not equal one effective captain. We have players like May, Lever, Lewis and Melksham appearing to doing all the talking and pointing on the ground. These two seem to be playing their own game. Viney tries hard but lacks too many prerequisites to be elite and the basic smarts. Jones appears to play a selfish game as another poster said earlier. Always burning teammates and rarely lifts when things get tough. Unsighted for the past three last quarters. Viney stifles midfield momentum with his inability to get the ball out to advantage. Jones is currently just plugging holes that any Wagner, Lockhart, Stretch etc, can fill just as good or better if they had consistent game time. Jones retirement cannot come soon enough. If for sentimental reasons we keep playing him till he reaches 300 games then our next season and perhaps the following season are stuffed and forget about any premiership window staying open.

So you didn't note that every time we got the ball we managed to butcher it? By hand, foot or simply running into trouble, or creating trouble where there was none?

Every time we got the ball out of congestion (always working our guts out to do it), within seconds we were under pressure again.

Meanwhile St Kilda found it relatively easy to make space, find teammates, take marks near goal, etc etc.

Our ability to [censored] up every possible game situation is unsurpassed.

That's why it was a devastating loss.

We weren't picked apart by a superior team.

We bumbled along against a lowly team, bad enough for us to be able to beat, and we self destructed.

Our entire season crystallised in one match.

It wasn't a bad day at the office, it was a spectacle. The bearded lady. The elephant man. An AFL team being utterly inept at their craft.

Beats me how anyone can feel good about seeing our complete collection of flaws exposed (on prime time TV to boot), with not much on the horizon to indicate improvement.

And for all that we lost by 3 goals after being ahead with about 10 minutes to go. Perspective.

Perhaps I should have said season to date. Richmond with destroy us.  It’s going to get ugly.

I have noticed Clarrie playing with one arm all season. It happened again last night. It is a wonder he does what he does with the ball while being held by the arm by the opposition in nearly all passages of play. Umpires see nothing. ?

Exactly! Are we the only ones who see it? The umpires, each game, see more than we ever could. However, they '...decline to comment...' in order for each opposition team to win from unobservable advantage.

Problem with Stretch is he exactly the same as ANB. Great trainers, professional attitude, tireless workers on the field, and not very good at football.

Agree - but the problem is exacerbated by being surrounded by a team that's currently not very good at football. Put one or two of the hard-working Stretch's, ANB's, Wagner's into a team full of Lewis's and Hodge's at their peak, and they'd look like a million bucks. Well, maybe not a million ...

Every team has so-so players, but it's what's going on around them that determines outcomes.

FWIW I think our lack of skills is part of the cascading effect which stems from being underdone at season's start, unexpected losses undermining confidence compounded by some players poor form and others' seasons interrupted by injury, resulting in more losses, less confidence and diminishing skills. But I could be wrong.

You're not wrong.

11 hours ago, Sorry kids said:

Sorry, but AFL level skills are not lost in some having a shortened pre season.

Not lost, but you only have to lose a few % at this level for it to have a negative impact on performance and execution, especially under (extreme) pressure and when exhausted.

And not just AFL either. In any sport, the higher up the elite ladder you go, the more time/effort is required to maintain skills at that elite level, and the greater the drop-off when - for whatever reason - that doesn't happen.

Im not actually sure what point your trying to make. Pick another team maybe and you'll feel better.

We will have to disagree bing. A lot of the talk here overcomplicates things. If your theory was at play we would be missing passes by a fraction, we are not doing that, we are missing horribly or gifting to the opposition. Some of our players constantly miss over a large body of work and time period.

Yes, no doubt. But that is evidence in favor of Webber's completely valid argument, not refuting it.

Thanks Webber. Good to see some people can see sense through the red and blue mist.

It’s an unpopular truth binman, because as supporters, emotion understandably gets the better of our logical minds. No less than anybody, I was yelling at the TV and bleeding at how they kept coughing the ball up...time after time after time. FAAAARRRRKING unbearable it was! At the heart of that truth though, and what makes it so hard to accept, is that the relationship between list availability and ladder position ultimately reduces the game to frank banalities. We support our club because we imagine it can have better people who coach better, play harder, and have more passion, skill and LOVE for the club and their mates than the other clubs. Along with ‘culture’ and ‘brand’, to use those horribly overworked, nigh on meaningless words. THIS will make them successful. Well, no it won’t, and not just because it’s full of fluffy intangibles. It’s just impossible for many to accept that success year on year IS MOST ACCURATELY determined by the numbingly boring statistic of week to week list availability. Good players, average players, so called ‘list cloggers’, doesn’t matter. Less cattle means lower on the ladder. Just is.

Its sad for Nathan but this is the big test for the club's resolve to move on re: leadership and thank Nathan for his service.

If the soft option is taken then no-one is serious about success if this decision cant be made.

I think it will be.

Not when they're a reason, albeit not the only reason.

Under your "theory" does every player in the AFL have the same level of skill? So there's no difference between Patrick Dangerfield or Jordan DeGoey and the 44th player on the Gold Coast Suns list?

If you don't recognise that, I guess you won't admit that having to bring a significant number players into your team who are not normally in your best 22 will have an effect. For an illustration, look at Colingwood's current injury list and  the downturn in their play.

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturday’s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFL’s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
